irig in starvation and death.
There had been heav,,r r top damage
and numerous highway accidents re-
sulting from the surplus deer popula-
tion, he said. "We hope the three-day
season this year will so reduce the
herds as to remove the hazard to
crops,' orchards and motorists on the
highways," Mr. Scott declared,
Another step in tying up the ex-
tensive communication system of the
Department of Lands and Forests has
just been completed with the instal-
lation of a radio station at the For-
est Ranger School at Dorset. With
the completion of this station com-
munication is now possible between
Head Office and all field offices in
the fire districts as well as between
the various district offices and every
phase of operation in the field.

An open invitation to members of
fish and game clubs and associations
in Ontario to visit hatcheries, bird-
r,aring stations, research and other
establishments of the Department of
Lands anti F‘•rests was issued by
Lands and Forests Minister, Harold
R. Scott. In a report to the Huron
and Erie Zone, Ontario Federation of
Angle rs and Hunters. Mr. Scott de-
elared his department "had made a
THE WINCI-1AM ADVANCF,-TIMF.S
sincere and honest effort to bring
back Ontario's fish and game re-
sources," to th- point prevailing 100
years ago,
Five years ago, the former Depart-
ment of Game. and Fisheries was tak-
en over by Lands and Forests, he
pointed out, "Five years ago we had
128 game wardens and two district
supervisors. Today we have 200 con-
servation officers, nine. wildlife man-
agement overseers. We had two bio-
logists and today we have 24," he
said. "Ontario has 28 fish hatcher-
! ics, more than the rest of Canada.
We have, because of the liaison be-
I tween our Fish and Wildlife Division
and the other divisions of the De-
partment, the most up to date aerial
patrol, the most modern programs
and policies in the world,"
It has been suggested that the gov-
ernment should spend more on fish-
ing and hunting "than we receive in
.licenses," be said, This was being
done, Conservation officers were be-
ing schooled at the Ranger School at
Dorset, one of the most modern es- I
tablishments of its kind in North Am-
erica.
A full-time chemist is now employ-
ed by the Department in the study of
pollution and has already carried out
nearly 100 investigations of effluents
discharged into waters by mines,
canning factories, pulp and paper and
lumber mills, dairies, cheese factories
and other industries, he said. "Work-
ing in close harmony with industry,
we have brought about definite
changes and improvements," he said.
"The closest' possible integration
with other divisions of the depart-
ment is carried out. As an example,
Crown land on marshes is no longer
sold without officials of the Wild Life
Division being consulted. Dams are
not constructed unless it is clear
they will not damage fish or game.
Reforestation stations are today work-
ing to produce new types of vegeta-
tion which will provide bird and
game cover and food,"
There had been an open season on
Hungarian partridge, he declared. "In
eastern Ontario, we found that even
when the birds were not being shot,
the winter kill was great, so there
was gross waste of fine birds, probab-
ly accentuated by food scarcity. To-
day we believe the Hungarian part-
ridge should be cropped and it was
cropped. Prairie chickens had be-
come well established on the Mani-
toulin Island and some of these fine
sporting birds were being transferred
to central southern Ontario, where we
hope they too will become well es-
tablshed,"
An open deer season in southern
Ontario, he said, was necessary. Deer
were plentiful as the result of long
protection and there should he fair-
ly heavy shoots harvesting the an-
nual deer production rather than giv-
