Thumbless Mittens for the Baby
For an added touch to your baby-
gift sweater or bootees -why. not
make a pair of mittens to match?
While the following directions are
written in garter stitch, any other
simple stitch could he substituted.
Directions (Size 0 mouths to a 'earl
Using a pair of No. 3 needles and
Saxony weight yarn, east on 40 stitch-
es.
First row Knit one, purl one all the
way across the row. Knit Garter stitch
for 9 ridges. Knit one, purl one, for
one inch
(Beading) Knit one, put thread over
and knit two stitches together. Re-
peat across the row, Knit Garter
stitch for 20 ridges.
(Narrowing) Knit one, knit two
together, Repeat across the row.
Next two rows----Knit two together
all the way across these two rows.
Break yarn, (leaving an end about
12 inches long) and thread into a
darning needle. Pull this through the
remaining stitches, drawing them to-
gether snugly and fasten well.
With this same needleful of yarn,
sew up the seam. Run contrasting
ribbon through the beading.
THOSE WORN OUT
TERRY TOWELS
Terry towels become thin at either
end with the centre portion remain-
ing comparatively substantial. Try
making a mitt out of this part,
rounding off the finger end and shap-
ing the cuff by threading elastic
through the cuff. This makes a good
bath mitt and by holding the soap
inside the mitt you prevent it from
giving you the slip. Keep a dry one
on hand for drying the baby's head.
It is much simpler than using a
large towel and works Like a charm.
Sew a tab on the cuff so that you can
hang it up to dry.
WHAT TO DO IN CASE
OF SICKNESS
Everyone has sickness in the home
at some time or other. Knowing how
to care for a sick person properly!
does much to relieve the strain. We
have a few pointers for home nurs-
ing as taught by Red Cross nurses
across Canada. Keep them handy and
when sickness strikes, he Prepared-

Wingham on Wednesday (today).
Touchdowns wore scored by Keith
Anderson and Desmond Brophy with
John Hanna kicking a convert and a
single. Clinton threatened in the last
half with some desperate passing and
ground attacks.
A brilliant goal line stand, featured
by a beautiful tackle by John Craw-
ford, in the last few seconds of play,
held the Clinton score down. The play
was clean throughout and everyone
agreed that it was a very fine game,.
School Project by Isobel Dennis
By the time this appears n print,
most of the Wingham and District
people; will know something about our
newest school project. This is a cam-
paign to sell subscriptions to Mac-
Lean-Hunter magazines and other
Canadian and American publications,
The territory has been divided into
eleven districts, eacn under the lead-
ership of a captain. Each team is
setting out to canvass all the house-
holders in their own neighbourhood.
A commission is made on each sub-
scription. The money is to go to the
Student's Council to finance their
activities. Points are given to the
student for each .mbseription sold;
there will he prizes awarded to our
most active and successful salesmen. ,
We are confident of the support
and encouragement of the people in
our School District, so students- -get
in there and work!

A delicate operation was performed
a few days ago in Room five. It all
took place when Shirley Stephenson
lost the thumbnail off her right hand.
An emergency mE.Sfit'llgi'l was sent
during an operation (if 1141., Jackson
is ton busy) better go to Mr. Higenelit
,oh, I forgot, he's married too.)
A broken tap in Room 9 was the
cause of Mr. Jackson's new idea for
watering his plants. A few days ago.,
any brave soul that ventured info
Room 0 found himself soaked to the
skin. Water was falling from the ceil-
ing like rain from the sky in April,
Some people thought that Mrs, Wil-
liams and Mr. Higenell, our worthy
Physical Education teachers, had
launched a new campaign for keeping
W.D,H.S. students spotlessly clean
It was not so, however, it was just
Mr. Jackson giving his wilting plants
a drink.
