'ho Caused the
Depression
Advocates of government planning
an direction of the nation's indus-
tries are in the habit of pointing to
tixe great depression as a horrible eis-
anitple of what the free enterprise
systein leads to.
But was free enterprise responsible
for the depression?
For years we in Canada had been
exporting our Stirplus products tq
Britain and other European countries,
land taking payment in American dol-
lars which those countries had re-
ceived in exchange for goods they had
said in the United States.
We, in turn, used those dollars to
'Kr for the many things we were buy-
ing from the Americans.
The Immediate cause Of the .depres-
Sion. .10 Canada was the failure of
those Markets, on which we had been
depending to take over surplus .pro,
duets.
This failure was clue to the fact
that governments, the world over,
were closing their markets against
imports. As a consequence, our ol4a,
tomers were ino longer able to sea
their exports and therefore were un-
able to buy from us,
In a world In which everybody is
trying to sell, and nobody allowed to
buy, there can be no market for .any-
body»
Private enterprise, if allowed to do
so, would have corrected the situation
by taking its losses and continuing to
UM' OPENS ON
MAY TWENTY _FOURTH
The city of Toronto is today being
almost completely destroyed by the
desperate battle proceeding within
its limits between forces of Second
and Third Aggressor divisions and
the remnants of Huronla formations
which have waged a street by street
struggle for the city since April 7,
At least that's the theoretical pic-
ture of the intelligence review leading
up to the Reserve Army exercise on
Trout Creek, between St. Marys and
Harrington on May 26th and nth.
Toronto residents who will be pleas-
ed to know that their homes are only
being blown up and knocked down on
paper, will not feel the Aggressor heel,
But this part of the "campaign" is
background to the May army Exer-
cise Crocus.
The intelligence summary shows
that Aggressor forces occupying an
area roughly corresponding to Que-
bec province, started an undeclared
war by invading Huronia (Ontario) on
March 20th,
Rapid success followed and Toronto
is now about to fall to the ruthless
enemy. By the end of May Huronia
troops will have been forced back on
a line Stratford-London-Port Stanley.
The sector in which the "battle"
will take place for infantry units of
the Second Brigade and ancillary
troops from the district is some four
square miles of farm land on Trout
Creek.
The exercise begins at 4 p.m. on
Saturday, May 26th., and concludes

Inflation hits hardest at the poorest

trade. But everywhere it turned it
found prohibitive government barriers
erected against it.
The depression was due to govern-
ment attempts to make trade and
industry subservient to government
policy, and not to the shortcomings
of private eeerprise.
With this Naring example of what
the. government planning and direc-
tion can do to the trade and industry
of the world, it is strange indeed to
see intelligent human beings seriously

The Christian Science Monitor
Memo to the Albert R. Atkinson
Post of the American Legion in
Philadelphia; Yours were the first
of the "Tide of Toys" to reach the
hands of European children.
It happened this way:
The crate containing your toys was
among 90 tons which arrived Febru-
ary 26 on the United States Lines
freighter, American Defender, from
the CARE warehouse in Philadelphia,
As you probably know, ten tons were
destined for Holland, the rest for
Austria and Germany.
The morning of February 27 a cere-
mony was arranged at the dockside
to mark the unloading of the first.
toYS. A bus had brought 20 children
from the Salvation Army orphans'
home in The Hague. They were typi-
cal Dutch children, between the ages
of six and twelve, mostly with straw
colored hair, dressed in worn but neat
coats.
Two Salvation Army workers
grouped them in a semicircle stand-
ing on crates behind the invited
guests.
They didn't quite know what was
to happen, Eight-year-old Erika
Kroese, who lost her father during
the war, and whose mother can't af-
ford to keep her at home, said they
had been told toys were to be unload-
ed for European children, hut not to

ced unit of the brigade will have been
driven off a tactical feature which
will then be retaken in a counter-at-
tack supported by tanks of the first
Hussars, London.
Main tank action will occur on
the 50-acre pasture area farmed by
Elmer Forbes, R.R. 2, St. Marys.
This is an unfenced field affording
fine scope for armored assault.
Other farmers of the area who are
donating their land without charge to
the army for the scheme include John
Bolton, Grant Hopson, Murray Hop-
son, Fred Pearson, Ellis Smith and
Arthur Wilson, all of R.R. 2, St.
Marys; . Alonzo Warner, Lloyd Kitt-
mer, Roy McCorquodale, Thomas Pol-
lard and Francis Seaton, all of the
Lakeside area.
The Hops farm will be brigade ar-

quarters will be set up on the John

Tree Cutting
Legislation
Some years ago, the Ontario Legis-
lature passed an act entitled the
"Tree Conservation Act." This act
permits a County to pass a by-law to
regulate the cutting on privately-
owned woodlots, with the government
reserving the right to approve the
regulations. Until this act was pass-
ed, woodlots were being stripped of
all, trees, and in most eases a barren
wasteland was left. The result was
that erosion became prevalent; soil,
'was washed away; sterile gulleys
formed; water tables were lowered;
and many other disastrous results
followed the stripping of the bush.
Ne one likes government restric-
tions, but when faced with the facts,
one of importance stands out—that
most woodlots are being badly man-
Algetl. Much is being done by the
Department of Lands and r'orests in
educating the public to better wood-2
lot management, but there is a cer-
tain type of person who thinks only
of his personal financial gain.
Most of the Counties in 'Western
Ontario have passed by-laws to con-
trol cutting on privately owned wood-
lots. All the Counties in. the Huron
District, which include the following:
Brant, Waterloo, Wellington, Went-
worth, Halton, Oxford, Perth, Huron,
Bruce and Grey have passed by-laws.
The County by-law and the names of
the Tree Commissioners may he ob-
tained from the County Clerk, Agri-
cultural Representative or the Zone
Forester.
The Zone Foresters are all busy
planting trees on County Forests
now. This work is made easier and
faster by the use or mechanical tree
planters. There are 17 planters in the
Huorn District. Nine of these are
owned by the Department, 3 by Coun-
ty Councils, 2 by the Upper Thames
Authority and 3 are owned privately.
Most of these were made by the Toe-
Lite Company of Galt.
omit on getting any themselves.
Dazed by all the hustle of activity,
the children, nevertWiess, bravely
waved their American and Dutch
flags and sang songs in Dutch and
even, in halting English, "It's a Long
Way to Tipperary,"
While camera lenses clicked, Capt
V, P. Arkins, master of the American
Defender, said he was glad his ship
bad been chosen for "this happy ser-
vice" and presented the cargo mani-
fest, tied in red ribbon, to Rankin Ro-
berts, North European director of
CARE.
