INDICATIONS OF GOOD DAYS TO COME FOR CANADIAN HUNTERS
ice from eyeS, when I think I see
something move, Then I stop quick,
Fifty yards ahead was a grizzly rub-
bing himself against big rocks and
big chunks of hair was falling out of
him. I think he just .come out of den.
He look rough, tough and mean. First
I have fun watching him, then I think
better look out. Grizzly like woman,
can't tell what she going to do.
"I look around but no tree to hold
me up. Heavy bush one side, deep
cold water other side, I just think,
maybe better back track, but I'm
too late, I hear big WOOF, then that
bear reared and roared. I know right
away he smell me, then he look arid
see me. We stand there looking each
one over, I can't run because I don't
like claws in my back.
"It was his move, and he not long
making it, but the worst thing was
he came toward me. I could only stand
my ground. He came on, first on all
fours, then he raise up like man, all
the time snorting and grunting.
There was a little wind come down
the river, on my face it seem some-
times very hot and sometimes very
cold, I had just one chance but it
made me brave, my old .22 single shot
gun was under my arm and there was
a .22 Longin my barrel. I knew there
is only one cent's worth of lead and
powder between me and the next
place I am to go.
"He's very brave bear, he never
stops coming. At 25 feet he stood up
and faced me, but I didn't shoot, for
I made my mind to wait till he cross-
ed a stick laying about 12 feet from
me. As he stood there glaring at me
with the juice running off his big
dirty teeth, I decided I did not like
any part of him, even his eyes looked
like bad business.
"He came close to my stick, crawl-
ing now, almost on belly, he'd rip up
big rock, look like he want to get
good foothold to jump. I see his big
claw and I know just one little slap
and my insides going to be on
ground.
"Now he come to stick, I not scared
now, I aim high between the eyes and •
I pull trigger. He never move, he
just let go and quiver. Then I run,
and fast, I can't go any further. I
stop and look, and he's in same place.
Then I walk pretty slow back and find
he's very dead, I feel better now but
pretty tired, so I go back to camp and
rest,"
The .22 Long cartridge in Little
Dave"s rifle is widely used by Indians
in that district, and the crucial cart-
ridge was probably intended for a
muskrat. The odds were heavily
stacked against such a small bullet
penertating the vital area in the
bear's head, and Little Dave's good
fortune appears to have been as re-
markable as was his marksmanship.
So help me , . THEY TELL ME
IT'S TRUE!

They Tell Me It's True
By Bob Clark
Nailed to the outside wall of an
Indian's cabin near Stewart Falls, in
Yukon Territory, is the hide of a
950-pound grizzly bear. The owner of
the trophy is Little Dave Moses, a
young Indian guide, trapper and fish-
erman. He acquired it last spring
under somewhat hazardous circum-
stances when, confronted by the huge
grizzly . , . but, here is the terrifying
story in Little Dave's own words.
THEY TELL ME IT'S TRUE!
"It was 'long about the end of
April this year, It was muskrat time--
sun shone bright— warm day time,
This morning, sun up one hour, put
out my camp fire, lace up my tent,
start mushing up to Stewart point
where I turn off to lake where my
traps set. I follow river--more easy
going on shore ice than through bush.
"Soon I learn not me alone, have
this idea. Rounding bend and pulling
parka over my face to keep sun on
