O/d and young don blades
The 4 to 5 p.m. hour last
Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Blyth
Arena was an exciting one.
One hundred and fourteen
members of the United Church
family took to the ice. They
included Stewards, Elders and
members of other Boards. But
most came from the Sunday school
which sponsors this annual skating
party. Interested spectators in the
gallery were non-skatinglmoms,
dads and even babes in arms.
A church skating party lures
people of all ages and degrees of
skating skills. Music man Jim
McCall, who had the honour of
being the oldest gentleman skater,
glided smoothly with his wife Effie
to the music for almost the hour.
With the help of kind, strong
supporters, Melda McElroy began
her escapade on blades which bore
the patent stamp 1932, and which
she had not used in 40 years.
MeldaMcElroy used her skates
after they had a 40 -year rest at the
Blyth United Church skating party
Saturday.
Neighbour Dave Cook had sharp-
ened them for this momentous
occasion. One and a half year old
Laura Meier demonstrated her
mobility on skates, while three
year old Jason Fidom showed that
he is well on his way to mastering
the art also.
In the Sunday school hall, a
smorgasbord table laden with
trays of sandwiches, relishes,
tarts, cookies, squares and a
station with hot and cold beverages
awaited the throng from the arena.
They numbered 75.
With appetites whetted, they
lost no time getting into action
again, this time at the supper
tables where laughter and conver-
sation reigned supreme.
Sunday school superintendent
Susan Howson, assistants and
staff deserve much credit for
organizing for the second year this
popular happy event.
Melville Women's Guild
studies love
Twenty members of Melville
Women's Guild met in the church
parlour on February 18 for their
regular meeting.
The committee in charge was
Mrs. Mary Huether, Mary Douma
and Valerie Shortreed. Valerie
opened the meeting with prayer
and a thought for February.
Hymns were sung accompanied by
Mrs. Helen Elliott at the piano and
the scripture was read in unison
from 1st Corinthians 13: 1-13 in the
Good News Bible.
In this chapter Paul states,
"Love is patient and kind, is not
jealous or proud, love is not
ill-mannered or selfish or irritable.
Love does not keep a record of
wrongs."
Mary Douma entitled her mess-
age The Greatest Thing In The
World and by the use of an
overhead projector drew attention
to all the forms of love as named by
Henry Drummond.
Mary Huether followed the
theme of the meeting with valen-
tine readings and songs in which
the group took part and Granny's
Story elosed this part of the
meeting.
The president, Mrs. Kathleen
Semple conducted the business.
Minutes and thank you notes were
read by the secretary, Mrs.Fi'ilunid
McNair, and the treasurer's report
was given by Mrs. Jeanne Ireland.
Pneumonia vests are being knitted
for the babies in Ethiopia.
A delicious dessert was served
by the committee.
