Faithfulness in life
BY DOUGZEHR, PASTOR
BRUSSELS MENNONITE
FELLOWSHIP
Have your purchased any stereo
equipment recently? Gone are the
familiar arms and needles of
stereos and record players of the
past. Laser thin rays of light are the
"in" thing for faithful reproduc-
tion of sound with a long lasting
effect on your record. The faithful
reproduction of sound or 'high
fidelity' is agood model to think
about, particularly at tax time, but
also for all the relationships of your
life.
Actually fidelity is an old word
which means being faithful, a
characteristic we need today.
Perhaps it is just the word that is
out of date, but I fear the idea may
be too.
I thought of this the other
evening while watching television
with my daughter. Three programs
in a row had a good message about
honesty and integrity in family
situations. Iwas impressed. Not all
of television is garbage!
It brought to mind a scene from a
'MASH' rerun. In the bleakness of
a Korean medical camp, a beauti-
ful young woman reporter came to
write a story. Megan was a real
charmer - perhaps you remember
the story. As she spent time
observing the doctors' care for the
wounded soldiers, the doctor she
'fell for' was B.J. One of the nurses
warned her, "B.J. is married. You
won't get anywhere with him."
But Megan turned on her charm!
B.J. wasn't unmoved. But his
strength was his commitment. "I
can't choose where I'm living or
what I'm doing in this war," he
said. "The only thing Ihave any
choice about is my commitment to
my wife and my little girl."
Wow, what a breath of fresh air.
That was one of the few incidents
on television that I can think of
where fidelity in marriage wasn't
snickered at. But television is not
alone. Novels, magazines and so
much of public communication
either condones or suggests that
infidelity in marriage is fun, should
be expected, or can even be
healthy. Andtheoverwhelming
number of marriage separations
and the continuing incidents of
divorce suggests that many indivi-
duals are buying into this view.
Being faithful or practising
fidelity has some very ordinary,
every day dimensions. We practise
fidelity every time we keep a
promise or are loyal to others and
avoid destructive gossip. We are
faithful each time we keep a
confidence or fulfill our responsi
bilities as citizens or employees.
We practise fidelity every time we
do a honest day's work for a day's
pay or take the time to do any job
with care, whether it's setting a
table or setting a broken bone.
We practise fidelity when we
speak out against unfair practices
