BY LOIS McARTER
After two weekend games that
were losses, the -bulls have an
uphill climb in their round-robin
series.
They were in Tavistock on Friday
night for their first game of the
series. It was an excellent, fast
end-to-end rush of hockey plays in
the typical rugged brand of hockey
that the Braves play.
Tavistock got on the scoreboard
first and the period was nearly over
before Kevin McArter assisted by
Rob Cardiff and Jim Bender
combined to tie the score and end
the first period at one apiece.
Tavistock scored the first two
goals of the second period before
Brussels rallied to score. Tim Fritz
managed to get through the maze
of players and score unassisted for
Brussels first goal of the period.
Rollie Smith and Mike Vincent
connected to score and tie•the score
at three.
Tavistock once more took the
lead early in the third but the Bulls
battled their way back with Kevin
McArter assisted by Rob Cardiff
and Jim Bender getting their
second goal of the game and tying
the score at four. With less than
two minutes in the game Tavistock
went ahead and Brussels failed to
get another marker to force an
overtime period. The Bulls out -
shot the Braves 13 - 6 in the third
period but their goalie came up
with the big saves.
Brussels was at home on Sunday
afternoon to arch rivals Seaforth
Centennaires for their "meet -the -
player day". Brussels' Dave
Schmidt assisted by Tom New-
bigging and Kevin Ruttan combin-
ed to put Brussels on the score-
board first. Seaforth evened the
score before the period was over to
end the period at 1 - 1.
The second period proved disas-
trous for the Bulls as the Centen-
naires scored three unanswered
goals and took a 4 - 1 lead in the
game.
Seaforth added one more goal
early in the third period before
Brussels got on the scoreboard
again. Tom Newbigging assisted
by Tim Fritz and Kevin Ruttan got
the first goal for Brussels. Kevin
McArter scored from Jim Bender
mid -way through the period to
close the gap a little more and make
the score 5-3. Seaforth beat goalie
Mike Smith one more time in the
dying minutes of the period to
claim their 6 - 3 victory.
The Brussels Bulls along with
their coaches met in the auditorium
following the game for a roast beef
dinner and were introduced to
those in attendance. Gerry Wheel-
erexpressed his appreciation to all
who attended to support the team
and to all the parents of players and
executive members who donated
in any way to make the event a
success. Special mention goes to
Vera Hastings, Lila Goll, Bernice
MacFarlane and Bessie Johnston
who donated pies and potatoes
towards the meal and were not
directly involved with the organiz-
ation. Everyone's support was
greatly appreciated.
The Bull's will be at home on
Wednesday night at 8:45 to the
Clinton Mustangs. They will be on
the road Friday night to Grand
Valley for a 9:15 game. Good luck
fellows.
MINOR HOCKEY
Wednesday night had the Pee-
wee A's playing against Exeter in
their first game of their group
playoffs. They led 3 - 0 at the end of
the first period. Jamie Nicholson
unassisted got the first goal; Steve
Fritz assisted by Greg Mulvey and
DarrenJohnstongotthe second
with Greg Wheeler assisted by
Jason Cooper and Steve McCut-
cheon getting the third goal.
Exeter got their only goal in the
second period while Brussels
added three more. Brad Taylor
assisted by Dan Beuermann and
Shawn Jacklin got one goal; Steve
McCutcheon and Jason Cooper got
the second goal; while Steve Fritz
assisted by Darren Johnston and
Greg Mulvey got the third goal.
The third period had Scott
Bremner and Danny Beuerman
scoring the first goal of the period
with Neil Pipe getting the second
goal -unassisted to give Brussels
the 8 - 1 win.
BANTAMS LOSE
The Bantams were at home to
Tara in the third and deciding
game of their O.M.H.A. series.
Tara was lucky enough to pick up
the win with a couple of easy goals,
that gave them the 5 - 3 win. They
were two evenly -matched teams.
I'm not sure but I think goal scorers
were Dean Nicholson, Bruce John-
ston and Ken Jamieson. This loss
eliminated Brussels from the
O.M.H.A. playoffs.
The Novice team was at home to
Blyth on Friday night for their first
game in a best of three series. A
good game of hockey by both teams
ended in a dead heat with a final
score of 1-1. Brett Clarkson scored
Brussels' only goal with assists
going to Brad Mulvey and Chris
Stevenson.
The two teams will play in Blyth
on Wednesday night and will be
back in Brussels for the third game
on Friday night.
