Prevention is the scientific meth- od of combatting all diseases in- cluding alcoholism; that is why Temperance Education stresses the fact that ABS,TINCE PAYS! Drinking in moderation is not the solution to the liquor problem; it is the main cause of that problem, The moderate drinker is always a candidate for alcoholism, a total abstainer never is. Scientists have studied carefully the effects of strong drink on the human body and have learned the old ideas we had about alcohol be- ing a food and a stimulant were wrong. They have proved alcohol to be a drug, and a poison. In the Pharmacological classification of poisons it is placed side by side with chloroform and ether and de- scribed as a narcotic poison. A Professor of Bio-Chernistry fat the University of Cambridge states that beer is the most harmful of alcoholic drinks even though the al- coholic content per volume is from 3 to 9%. In the face of this scientific ad- vice a Director of the Brewers' So- ciety is responsible for the following statement: "We want 'to get the beer drinking habit instilled into thousands of young men w,ko do not at present know the taste of beer."
