4GOODWILL NECESSARY
1SETWU.N. TOWN AND
COUNTRY
One of the most valuable assets any
town, may have is good will, yet it can-
mot be purchased, and it is on the good
will that the merchants depend for
their business year after year
Recently the Chamber of Commerce
iheld a "Rural Relations Banquet" at
-which a large number of farmers from
veighbouring townships attended, This
;is one means of fostering good will,
The 'Warden of Huron County, John
Armstrong, Reeve of Hullett Town-
Alp, in a short address, stressed the
importance of harmony and good will
between town and country, as each are
important to the other. Ile asked that
they try to tutilerstand one anather s
problems and thus strengthen harm my
and goollistill.
He used as an illustration t, number
on the program, where the pianist was
from the town and the soloist &unt
the farm, and when combined hartnony
prevailed.
If those present take to neart the
few words of Mr. Armstrong, we feel
sure that Winglutut and the surround-
ing area will be a better plaza: in which
to live.

WHAT WILL THE 1049 TAX
RATE BE?
Within the next week or so, the
Wingham Town Council will consider
estimates and strike the tax rate for
1949. What will it be?
In looking over the district weekly
papers, many municipalities have al-
ready announced their new mill rate,
and in' practically every case all have
shown higher rates.
The matter of financing a town,
such as Wingham, brings with it many

CONTRACT BRINE
It is quite in order to make an open-
ing bid in a four card suit, but the
wisdom of doing this does not apply
to defensive overcalls. When your
right hand opponent has advertised at
least two or three defensive tricks by
opening the bidding, it is advisable to
appraise the calibre of your left hand
opponent carefully before venturing to
overcall in a suit of less than five
cards.
A recent Bridge Club hand will
serve as an illustration.

North won the first trick with the
queen of diamonds and correctly re-
turned the queen of hearts. The queen
held the trick, but when North con-
tinued with the eight East cadre up
with his ace.
East returned a small club and this
trick vas won in dummy by the jack.
He switched to a small spade from
dummy, South taking with the ace.
South then drew the remaining trumps
gave his partner the lead in diamonds
and later gathered up a tenth trick for
his side with the ace of clubs.
East had taken a penalty of eleVen
hundred points on what he had con-
sidered an 'innocent" little one bid.
If East had held just one more
trump he could have controlled the
diamond suits long enough to establish
three tricks for himself in either spades
or clubs.
