ever possible
A Bridge Club .hand of a few weeks
ago is a good illustration of the point.
There were two ways to avoid guess-
ing a finesse in the club suit and it iS
pleasant to report that most of the de-
clarers found one or other of them.

The contracts ranged from four to
six spades, with South the declarer,
West opened the king of hearts tak-
l en in dummy with the ace. After play-
ing three rounds of trumps, and the
opponents' trumps falling three-two,
the declarer could be certain of making
six odd,
Four tricks in diamonds followed
and the four of hearts was discarded
on the last diamond. Then West was
put in by a heart lead, He had the
unhappy choice of returning a heart,
thereby giving the declarer a ruff in
one hand and a club discard in the
other, or of leading a club and giving
him a "free" finesse in that suit.
The slam still could have been made
e» if the clubs in dummy had been
A x instead of A J 10. In this case
the declarer could have discarded a
club on the fourth diamond trick,
played the ace and king of clubs, con-
ceded a heart trick, and cross ruffed
dummy's remaining heart and his own
last club.
In playing a bridge hand it is not
infrequent that a sure thing can be
employed in place of an uncertain
finesse.
