Mrs. William Montgomery has
spent the past two weeks with her
daughter, Mrs. IL I3oland and Mr.
Boland at Wakerton.
Mr. and Mrs. W, Heimpel and
children, spent Sunday with the for-
mer's mother, near Stratford.
Miss Margaret Moffatt returned
from Wingliam General Hospital on
Saturday where she had undergone
an emergency operation for appendic-
itis the previous Sunday- Margaret's
many friends are pleased to know she
is making a good recovery.
Mr. U. S. Aikenbead, Mrs. Walter
Hilton and daughter, Susanne, all of
London„ visited on 'Friday with Mr,
and Mrs, D, S, MacNaughton,
Mr. Harvey Timm is a patient in
Wingham General Hospital where he
underwent an operation on Tuesday
of last week. His many friends wish
for him a speedy recovery.
Miss Anna P. Lewis, Supt. of W. L
Branch, Dept. of Agriculture, was
motoring to Petrolia to attend a meet-
ing on Wednesday, when her car was
badly wrecked, in an accident. Al-
though Miss Lewis was not seriously
hurt. Miss Lewis is known personally
to a number of W. I. workers in this
district.
Scarcely anyone escaped damage to
their buildings during the wind storm
of last week, perhaps the barns of the
farmers suffering the greatest damage
There has been a great demand for
shingles. Fortunately the weather has
been mild for to make the necessary
repairs.
Dr. Hall of Western University
stated at IGoderich last week, 98
students from Huron County are en-
rolled at Western University this year.
Friends here learned with regret of
the painful accident sufMred by Miss
Fanny Longley of Gorrie, who fell en
Thursday fracturing her hip. Miss.
Longley was taken to Wingham Gen-
eral Hospital.
Funeral services for the late Mrs.
David Sanderson were conducted at
the home of her son, Jim, on Monday,
Mrs. Sanderson was spending the win-
ter with her, daughter, Mrs. Mercer
at Markdale, and was ill only a. short
time suffering a heart attack. An
obituary will appear next week.
The Young People's Union have
commenced practice for a play to
which everyone will look forward to.
Sunday visitors with Mr. and Mrs.
Frank Stamper were, Mr. William
South, Mrs. Mildred Stewart, Mr.
Ward Sellers all of third line of Mor-
ris, also Mr. Victor Errington of
Dungannon.
Mr, and Mrs. Clendon Yeo of South-
ampton, were week-end guests of the
former's mother, Mrs. George Yeo.
Mr. Walter Woods, reeve of Turn-
berry, 'Mr. Elmer Parrish and Mr.
Harold Gowdy, reeve and deputy
reeve of Howick, who attended Coun-
ty Council last week, were guests at a
banquet given by the Goderich Lions
Club, in honour of the council. An in-
teresting feature of the evening was
the premiere „showing of the film,
"The Books Drive On." depicting the
itinerary of the Huron County Library
Truck. The picture was directed and
produced by the ,,county Librarians,
Mr. and Mrs. Gnn Eckmier, The
photography is the work of Robert
Henry, Goderich, and the commentary
by Tom Rafferty, Winghani. Its pro-
duction sponsored by the Huron
County Council is the first of its kind
in Ontario. Others taking part in the
programme were L. E. Cardiff, M.P.,
of Brussels, who sang a solo and Mr.
John Hanna, M.L.A.

Local Artists Winners
Wroxeter talent came in for a good
share of prizes on Friday night, when
the Blyth Lions Club, put 'on an
Amateur Contest Concert, Fifty dol;-
lars was offered in prizes with 7 to
be chosen out of 20 entries. Ken Ed-
gar of the Howick Lions Club was
master of ceremonies. Three judges
gave the decisions. First prize was
awarded to Wroxeter .Ladies' Quar-
tette. Misses Thelma Denny, Gilberta
Howes, Margaret Wearring, Jean
Moffatt, singing, "Spread a little Glad-
ness." Mrs. Lyle Brothers at the piano.
2. Joan Johnston, Walton, daughter
of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Johnston,
singing I'm just a little Petunia. Joan
won first place at Howick Lion's
Club contest in spring of 1948. 3. ' Bob
Cunningham, solo, I'm My Own
Grandpaw, Mrs. Brothers accompanist.
4. Harry Lear, Londesboro, solo;
5. Marjorie Moffat, Highland Fling,
accompanied by sister, Jean; 6. Mar-

Teddy Bear's Picnic, accompanied by
her mother, Mrs. Clarence Sparling.
The Memorial Hall nicely decorated
for the occasion, had a capacity aud-
ience and the entire concert was much
enjoyed.
World Day Of Prayer
The date of the annual World Day
of Prayer is set for March 4th, 1949,
and will this year be held in e Un-
ited Church. When all the women
of the cornmunqy will gather for a
special service of prayer.
United Church Annual
The United Church, Wroxeter, will
hold their annual meeting on Thurs-
day evening of this week, January 27.
Pot Luck supper will be served at 7
o'clock, followed by the business
meeting, Ladies of the congregation
are asked to meet at the church at 2
p.m., Thursday to set tables.
Woman's Association
The president of the W. A. of the
United Church, Mrs. Wm. Hart pre-
sided over the regnlar meeting on
Tuesday afternoon. The opening
hymn was in keeping with the season,
Standing at the Portal, followed by
the ford's Prayer. Mrs. W. T. Mac-
Lean chose for the scripture lesson,
St. John's Gospel, chapter 12, verses
23 to 50. Plans were made to cater for
the Lion's Supper meeting-, also the
annual Pot Luck Supper in the church,
on Jan. 27th. New cutlery has been
purchased by the Association for`-the
church. The Roll Call was answered
by a verse containing the word
"Light,", with 16 members and 1 vis-
itor present,
The hymn, "The Day Thou Gayest"
and prayer by the president brought
the devotioual and business period to
a close. The balance of the afternoon
Was spent quilting, Pot Luck supper
was served at the close, Mrs, J. X.

The' very splendid book, "fifty years
of Achievement" prepared by the Ont-
ario Women's Institutes was 'on hand
at the recent meeting held at Mrs.
Allen's home. This book is available
to all Institute members and interested

Gibson. Ronald McMichael led in
prayer, Members were reminded of the
play, The Improper Mr. Proper, put,
on by Gorrie Y,P.U. and sponsored
by the local group on Wednesday,
Jan. 26th, in Wroxeter Town Hall!,
The second hymn chosen was Rise
Up 0 Men of God. Scott Hunter gave
an interesting topic on Christian Cul-
ture. Rev. Cronhielrn conducted the
Bible Study Period, The hymn, Jesus
Saviour Pilot Me and the Mizpah
benediction brought the meeting to a
close
Women's Institute
The February mdeting of Wroxeter
Women's Institute will be held on
Wednesday, Feb. 2nd., at 2.30 p,m. at
the home of Mrs. Allen Munro. The
Motto, From Labor, Health, from
Health, Contentment, will be given by
Mrs. Reg. Newton. Mrs. Lyle Broth-
ers will be in charge of current

BLUEV ALE
Men and boys in the community
have shown a great deal of interest
and have worked faithfully to convert
the Presbyterian Church shed into a
skating rink. A well has been dug in
a location, handy to the shed and the
hall. The shed has been flooded and
all that is required now is sonic real
frosty weather.
Mac Scott, who has been a patient
in the Wingham General Hospital for
the past seven weeks folloWing art
accident, when he was struck by a car,
was taken to Victoria Hospital on
Sunday, where he will consult a bone
specialist. He was accompanied by his
sister, Miss Olive Scott,
A euchre party in the Community
Hall on Friday night and sponsored
by the local Women's Institute drew
a big crowd. Sixteen tables were in
progress. Mrs. Harvey Robertson was
awarded the high prize for the ladies
and Allan Breckenridge received the
greatest number of prizes for the gen-
tlemen. Lunch was served and a real
social evening enjoyed.

um met at the home of Mr, and "Mrs.
Charles Johnston. Miss Wilda Breck-
enridge was leader in the discussions
on Social Security. Unemployment in-
surance was not considered. The fav-
orable comment was made about fam-
ily and mother's allowances, that since

him, Mr. Ralph is recovering from a
serious illness.
