at the better contract of four spades,
but it is noteworthy that two oi them
failed also.
They could play the hand as describ-
ed above, but they had an easier and
safer way. After winning the first trick
with the ace of hearts, their next move
was to lead out the ace aml king of
spades, leaving the queen at large,
three rounds of diamonds are led, end-
ing in the North hand, Then the last
diamond is led and the nine of hearts
discarded on it. This was the correct
play for the spade contract—and it
also had the attribute that it worked!

The fourth declarer paused to con-
sider what possible solution there was
for the rather hopeless situation, and
he was rewarded with success.
With nine hearts in the opponent's
hands originally, one of them must
have had at Ieast five, so the only hope
of saving the contract was to avoid a
spade loser, The declarer saw that his
best chance lay in the possibility that
East had either the queen—jack of
spades doubleton, or both of these
cards hi combination with certain of
the missing smaller spades. A small
enough chance indeed, but why not
play for it?
Crossing to the. North hand (after
winning with the ace of hearts) he led
the seven of spades, hopeful that East
might cover with the eight, if he had
it. However, when East played the two
the declarer put up the nine front the
closed hand.
From there on his task was easy,
and the three break in diamonds gave
him an overtrick, and a top score.
Incidentally, five declarers played
