Friday,S"af,rth ',Sunday Old teams slow The six old franchises in the National Hockey League are not off to great starts in the 1980-81 cam- paign. In the overall standings of the 21 NHL, teams, one must move down to the eighth spot to find one of the original teaMs, the Montreal Canadiens. Then its down to the eleventh spot to the Chicago Black Hawks, two rungs lower to the Toronto Maple Leafs and two more to the Boston Bruins in fifteenth place. Practically bringing up the rear are the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings with only the Win- nipeg Jets below them. The Philadelphia Flyers are out in front in first place. Three teams, the Flyers, New York Islanders and Minnesota North Stars have lost only five games. The North Stars have five less games than most of the other clubs. Three clubs have shown tremendous improvement over last year. They include the St. Louis Blues, Washington Capitals and Vancouver tanucks. In Washington, youthful coach Gary Green, formerly of the Peterborough Petes has his team play- ing great positional hockey and they had little trouble in disposing of the Toronto Maple Leafs in two weekend contests. The Washington club is also low' in the loss column iwth only six. They have a high total of nine ties. Baseball remains The 1980 baseball season is long gone but the summer sport has a happy faculty of staying in the limelight for most of the 12 months of the year. During the off season, publicity varies between managers and coaches eing fired, finding other positions and players signing long term high priced contracts. The 1980 surge towards pennant contention by the Montreal Expos may not be repeated next summer un- less they start cracking and get some more top notch players. So far this fall and it could be called winter now, the Expos have not only stood still, but, one could say they have fallen back. The loss of fleet footed outfielder Ron LeFlore is going to hurt the Expos in the run department. In the same vein, we doubt if LeFlore will be enough to make the White Sox any contenders for the pennant. A recent article in the Sporting News which is known as baseball's Bible lists the tops in a variety of categories, Despite their low standings the Toronto Blue Jays fall into two categories. Alfredo Griffin and Damaso Garcia are listed as the best double play combination in the American league and Bob Bailor was said to be the second best in hit and run. The best fastball pitcher is Len Barker of the Cleveland Indians a starter and Rick Gossage in relief followed by Ron Guidry of the Yankees and Rich Gale of the Royals. The best sinker pitch belongs to Tommy John, Fergy Jenkins is the fastest pitcher and Dick Drago of Boston the slowest. Guidry also has the best slider, Steve Stone the best curveball and Scott McGregor of the Orioles with the best control. Behind the plate, Carlton Fisk of Boston gets the nod as the best in calling pitches and alio makes the most number of trips to the mound. Lance Parrish of Detroit has the strongest arm and Butch Wynegar of Minnesota gets the ball away the quickest. While the two Blue Jays are best at double plays, Rick Burrelson of Boston is the best shortstop at tur- ning a double play and Frank White of Kansas City gets the nod at second base. The best infielder hands belong to Mark Belanger of Baltimore and Todd Cruz of the White Sox has the strongest arm. In the outfield, Willie Wilson of Kansas City has the best range, Gorman Thomas of Milwaukee is the most willing to crash into a fence, Wayne Nodrhagen of Chicago has the strongest arm and Dwayne Murphy of Oakland plays the shallowest. As could be expected George Brett rates at the top in two batting categories. Brett is the hardest to strike out and is the tougest in UP' clutch. Mike Hargrove of ClevLand has the sharpest eye at the plate and takes the longest at the plate to get ready for a pitch. Ben Ogilivie of Milwaukee has the hardest swing, Rob Piccilo of Oakland is the toughest to walk and Rod Carew is the best bunter, Incidentally, the Rolaids relief man wards went to Dan Quisenberry of Kansas City and Rollie Fingers of the San Diego Padres. e,tuisenberry was tops in the AL with 83 points. Aurelio Lopez of Detroit was fourth with 63 points. The NL battle was a lot closer with Fingers only edging Tom. Hume of Cincinatti by one point 59 to 58. Pitchers are given two points for each win, two points for each save and one point deducted for each game lost. A good year for cagers This year is promising to be one of the best in many years for the basketball teams at South Huron District High School. The junior girls team under the tutelage of coach Pat Rowe won 10 straight games in the Huron-Perth Conference regular schedule. They will be action today, Wednesday at the South Huron gym in the second game of the Huron-Perth finals and We wou.-I hope they continue their un- defeated streak. • The senior girls art. also in the H-P final and the senior boys club appear to be ready for a good season. A week ago they won a tournament in St. Thomas with Doug Hoffman sinking the winning point with only a couple of seconds remaining. I Lucan when they posted a 7-3 win over the Irish at the re -1 Friday, but they watched the Tavistock Braves make it a three-way with three losses during the week. They were clipped 9-2 by Ilderton, 4-2 by Lucan and 5-2 in Goderich. Calvin Stanlake and John Wells fired the goals against Ilderton with the aassists to Steve Gould and Steve Batten. In an exhibition contest, the bantam H team dropped a 2-0 verdict to Huron Park. Jim Beaver and Scott Dinney scored for the win- ners. Jason VanHarlaan and Derrick Misner were in goal for Exeter and played superbly to keep the score close. Pee wees win The Exeter pee wees finally picked up their first Shamrock point when they tied Ilderton 3-3 at the rec centre, Wednesday and came right back Friday to beat Lucan 5-4 for their first win of the seMon. Sean Whiteford and Jim Lewis sparked the team to their first points of the season. Saturday night, the midgets travelled to Goderich and returned with a 4-3 win, again coming back from an early 2-0 deficit. Mark Vandergunst scored a pair and the singles came off the sticks of Clark and Underwood. Randy Ford and Scott Brintnell helped out on two goals each and single assists went to Steve(( Batten, Clark and Dave Hayter. Peter Dearing was in the nets to post all three triumphs. Atoms get tie The Exeter atoms gained one tie in two weekend contests. They tied Goderich 2-2 on Saturday and then dropped an 8-1 loss to St, Marys at the rec centre, Sunday. Scoring in the loss against St. Marys was Rob McKnight, with the assists going to Doug Clark and Jeff Hannah. In the Goderich game, Scott Boyd and Jon O'Connor blinked the light, for Exeter, with Doug Clark picking up one assist. Bantams dumped The local bantams kept their winless streak intact tie when they lost to the Bray.es by a 10-2 count, Saturday. The Brave's. are. the hottest team in the division and they goals in the two games, while Lewis played some standout goal to keep the.opposition at bay. Tim VanDam scored the lone Exeter goal with the assists going to David Sch- windt and David O'Connor. On Saturday, the Waxers battled Goderich to a 4-4 tie. Irish have one, This week, Exeter hosts Mitchell at the rec centre„ Friday, and then will have §eaforth here fora Sundays afternoon contest. The Irish also have a shot at Mitchell and the standings could be even tighter by the end of the week. Strong effort The Hawks came up with one of their best efforts in handing the Irish the 7-3 set- back, Friday. The visitors took a quick 2- 0 lead and were ahead 3-2 at the end of the first. However, the Hawks scored the only two goals of 'the middle frame and won going away with three more un- answered -goals over the final 20 minutes.
