Sportsmen's Dinner is shaping, up as the best ever
presented here. Before anyone says. it, "Yes, we seem
to say each year that the dinner is going to be bigger
and better than' any before."
But, this year that staterne,t should be correct.
The 1981 dinner chairman Frank Giffin dropped
• into the office this week and nonchalantly announced
that Don Cherry, Jean Belliveau, Terry Pohl and
Gerry Datillio would definitely be in attendance at the
dinner on February 3, 1981.
Everyone that has ever watched a NHL hockey
telecast or especially the mid-week games on Channel
11 in Hamilton knows the controversies that Cherry
can start.
The only monkey wrench that could stop the
former Boston- and Colorado coach from appearing
here' would be if he found another coaching position in
the meantime and the way NHL coaches are biting the
dust that is certainly possiblee
Gerry Dattilio will be representing Canadian foot-
ball and more explicitly the Montreal Alouettes while
Jeah Belliveau's fame as a Montreal Canadien is still
quite alive in the memories of hockey fans.
Terry Puhl is, the latest Canadian to appear as a
star in major league baseball. He was one of the
leading lights as the Houston Astros came close to win--
ning the National league championship a few months
ago.
Puhl who hails from Western Canada led the
Astios with his hustle on the bases and in the field. His
on base percentage in the championship final was fan-
tastic.
Baseball broadcaster Joe Garagiola has been
listed as the headline speaker, but, this has not yet
been confirmed.
If Joe is notavailable attempts will be made to br-
ing in George Anderson. No, we are not talking of our
very good friend Rev. George Anderson of town, but,
Sparky Anderson who is now manager of the Detroit
Tigers after a very successful sojourn with the Cincin-
nati Reds. ,
Calls were put out to secure Tug McGraw. They
were unsuccessful as the Phillies Star reliever will be
in Hawaii at that time taping a Siiperstars show.
Extra entertainment will be provided by the On-
tario Provincial Police pipe band.
Let's put February 3 on our calendars as a must
engagement. Besides an entertaining evening, you will
supporting the Exeter Lions and the crippled
children of this area and throughout Western Ontario.

Fred Shero and Bryan Watson were ousted recent-
ly from their respective posts with the New York
Rangers and Edmonton Oilers. Next on the list
appears to be Detroit Red Wing coach Ted Lindsay.
Don't be surprised if Don Cherry finds a coaching
spot before too long. It's unfortunate that a man with
the, hockey know-how of Cherry's is unemployed.
That's the kind of unemployment a lot of people
would like. While not working he is still being paid by
the Colorado Rockies.
Well run tourney
Congratulations are in order to Tom Hardy and the
rest of the executive of the Lucan and district men's
rec hockey league.
They sponsored the first annual Lucan Cup
challenge hockey tournament and it provided an ex-
cellent brand of hockey throughout the entire
weekend.
Without body contact, the tournament produced a
fast skating wide open brand of hockey. Slap shots
were also prohibited going back to the old dys of the
wrist shot.
A number of penalties were called for apparent
slap shots where the blade of the stick was raised
above the knee of a shooter.
The team from Black Creek in the Markham area
proved to be tops going through the three-day tourney
undefeated. •
Their most unusual accomplishment came in the
first game When they defeated the strong Ilderton club
without substitutes. They went the entire game with
only six players in uniform. They were helped behind
the bench by the encouragement of Lucan youngster
Gerry Emery.
The Ilderton team iced a number of ex-Lucan Irish
and Lucan-Ilderton Jets. These included Tom Hodgins,
Jamie Robb,Riek Martin,Larry Haugh, Steve Proctor,
Bill White and Brian Hackett of the Jets and juniors
Gary Herr, Bob Evans, Craig Croman, Jim Maguire
and Ken Needham.
The Heighway Personnel team roster also listed
several ex-Jets. They included Pete Crosbie, Rick
Banks, Randy Hill, Ed Parkinson, Ian McTavish and
Randy Roth along with former London Knight Tom
Trevial.
The two Lucan clubs also boasted numerous
names which are well-known through out area hockey
circles.
