Wishful thinking
This' may sound like some wishful thinking as far
as weather is concerned, hut, we would like to talk
about baseball this week and think about Warmer
temperatures.
The Toronto. Blue Jays are apparently • quite
serious about shoring up their defences with a new
catcher.
The Jays went into the free agent draft and put a
claim in for only three players and they were all
catchers,
Coming off their best season ever the Blue Jays.
will ,open their 1981 home season on Monday, April 13
at 1A0 when they will attempt to extend a streak
which has seen them win each of their previous four
home openers.
To do so, the Blue Jays will have to knock off the
defending east division champion New York Yankees.
Chicago, Detroit, Kansas City and last year,
Milwaukee, have beenthe Blue Jays previous opening
day victims.
As has been the case ever since 1978, Toronto will
both open and conclude their season on the road, As
they did in 1978, they will face the Detroit Tigers in
their season opener on Thursday, April 9,
Following the three game weekend series with the
Tigers the Blue Jays will return home where they will
begin a 9 game homestand which will see them play
host to the Tigers and Brewers as well as the Yankees.
Interestingly, while the Blue Jays are 4-0 in home
openers they have yet to win their first road game of
the year.
Toronto will close out the 1981 home season on
Wednesday, September 23 against Oakland before
heading out to the west coast where they will close out
the regular season some 11 days later on Sunday, Oc-
tober 4 in Seattle's Kingdome.
For the third year the American League is
operating under a balanced schedule with each team
playing at least six home and road games against all
other American League clubs. The remaining six
games in the 162 game schedule will be made up with
extra single games against teams in your own division.
Toronto will have an extra home game versus
Boston, Detroit and Milwaukee while they will play
one extra road game in Baltimore, Cleveland, and
New York.
With there being seven teams in both the East and
West Divisions of the A.L. there always has to be at
least one interdivisional matchup to enable all 14
teams to be in action at once.
This season the Blue Jays are the swing team with
the majority of their games in the latter part of the
season coming against western division opposition,
The Blue Jays were 39-45 versus the A.L. West in 1980
with a 22-20 margin at home.
The Blue Jays will play a total of 81 games in 79
dates this season at Exhibition Stadium. As well,
Toronto will play host to the Montreal Expos in the
fourth annual Pearson Cup Game on Monday, July 6 at
6 p.m.
Included in the Blue Jays home schedule are 33
single day games, 44 single night games and 2
doubleheaders. The first twin bill is a Dominion Day
twi-night doubleheader on July 1 at 5:30 while the se-
cond one will be a Sunday afternoon encounter against
the Milwaukee Brewers on August 16 beginning at
1:30. As well as Dominion Day, the Blue Jays will also
have holiday, home dates on Good Friday, Easter
Monday, Victoria Day and Civic Holiday.
Need some help
The Exeter Minor Soccer Association is already
planning for the 1980-81 season.

the soccer group.
The annual meeting will be held Wednesday,

DeBruyn said a lot of new blood is needed on the
executive and to fill a number of coaching positions.
Everyone is invited to the meeting. Anyone
needing additional information should call president
Ron Helm (Exeter) or secretary Martin DeBruyn
(Crediton).
It didn't play fair
One member of the Buffalo Sabres hockey team
missed a few games recently becaitse of an unusual ac-
cident.
He was playing a pinball machine in Chicago when
he felt it wasn't playing fair with him.
So he hit it a little too hard and his hand was cut by
flying glass. The Sabre was Larry Playfair.
