Test gives dramatic gasoline increase

added.
Tife minister said the size
of the improvement is im-
pressive, since many of the
participants were already
energy . con.sclous and
practising good driving
habits.
Laird Elcombe, program
director of radio station
CFJT in Cambridge, who
showed the best im-
provement of 37.7 per cent,
attributed his performance
to beth, the tune up, andthe
fact that he would shut his
engine off rather than let it
idle while having to wait for
somebody.
Motor League, the
demonstration was part of
the Ontario. Energy Savers
campaign to show how
motorists can reduce
gasoline consumption by
following common sense
gnidelines,
It fellows earlier tests in
the Toronto and Hamilton'
regions where media par-
ticipants had an average
improvement of about 15 per
cent, and 22 per cent
respectively.
Among the London-Sarnia
region participants, im-
proved mileage was as high
as 37,7 per cent. The
volunteers represent most of
the major daily newspapers,
radio and television stations
in the region,

provement in efficiency by
all Ontario motorists would
be equivalent to reducing
gasoline consumption by
about NO million gallons of
gasoline a year worth more
than $700 million," ac-
cording to Robert Welch,
deputy premier and minister
of energy,
The minister noted that the
results of the more than 40
media participants from the
three regions proves that
very little effort is required
by motorists to substantially
reduce their gasoline con-
sumption.
"Even if we can achieve
an average reduction of just
10 per cent, which is
equivalent to 300 million
gallons a year or two gallons
He also said that he tried to
drive a little "easier" than
he had in the past.
The three-week demon-
station consisted of the
following:
- During the first week,
participants drove to and
from work without changing
their normal driving habits,
and only recorded mileage
and fuel consumption.
- In the second week, their
cars were tuned-up. and the
drivers tuned-in to gas-
saving driving habits..
In the third week, par-
ticipants recorded mileage
and fuel consumption of their
tuned-up vehicles and drove.
in an energy-efficient
manner.
Mr. Welch said reduced
fuel consumption can be
achieved by observing speed
limits,maintaining air
pressure in tires, driving
smoothly and with an-
ticipation, having vehicles
properly tuned and by using
vehicle air conditioners
sparingly'.
"Following these
guidelines will result in
substantial savings for
drivers," he said,
The Energy Savers
program was recently
conducted in Thunder Bay.
In all, the demonstration has
involved about 50 news
media persons from across
the province in four separate
clinics.
"Canada imports 20 per
cent of its petroleum needs
and Ontario buys almost 100
per cent of its petroleum
from other jurisdictions,"
the minister said,
"Because the cost of
petroleum and its security of
supply are of vital economic
concern to Ontario and
Canada, every effort must be
made to conserve gasoline
and diesel fuel,"
Starting on September 24,
another phase of the Energy
Savers campaign will be
launchd in Sault Ste, Marie
in conjunction with the
ministry of energy's Heat
Save program, Both
programs will encourage the
conservation of heating oil in
homes and in business.
"Conservation makes
economic sense and our
conservation programs are
designed to make the public
more aware of its benefits."
By 1985, the government of
Ontario has targeted for a
reduction in the annual
growth rate in consumption
of petroleum to zero per
capita. •
"We believe Ontarians
generally are ready and
willing to conserve energy on
a broad basis so as to con-
tribute to meeting these
goals," Mr. Welch said,
