Douglas Walper had a pleasant surprise on Saturday afternoon when a former friend, Grant Brownridge from Brampton who is attending the University of Guelph called on him at his home here. Wednesday, Anne Walper visited Elinor Shortt of Strathroy. Elinor's sister Virginia of Sarnia had also come to visit her that day. In the afternoon Mr. & Mrs. Henri Yelle of Parkhill called on her. They had a very enjoyable time together. Both deputy-reeve Judy Uriiac and Baird said that they would not be seeking re- election while Crawford and Green said they would seek re-election as councillors. Sharen said he was un- decided about his political future and probably would not make up his mind until shortly before the close of nominations on October 20. Members of Oakwood golf club in Grand Bend held a mixed "two-ball' tour- nament Wednesday. More than 100 golfers showed up for what was billed as a "fun day", and the weather co- operated. The tournament had been scheduled for the previous week, but rain had forced the postponement. Tournament winners were Vera Morrison and Murray McLean, both of Grand Bend. The winners and runner-up received prizes donated by 15 area businesses. The game began with all players on the course for a "shot gun" start at 9:30 a,m. Everyone finished at noon, and lunch followed. Playing rules were relaxed a bit in the "fun" tournament, and misses and whiffs didn't count. Each player teed off at each tee, and then the better ball was selected by each couple. The partner to the owner of the better ball took the second shot, and then • alternate shots were played until the ball was holed. Grand Bend Lioness Club held their first meeting of the 1980-81 year on Thursday, at the Green Forest, President, Diane Bexton, presided over the meeting which saw 44 members, two guests and a guest speaker, Lion Frank Allister, Deputy Zone chairman spoke to the Lioness club concerning the newly formed district A-1, of which Grand Bend is now a part, Secret pals for the past year were revealed during roll call and new ones chosen for the upcoming year. Lioness, Nancy Thomas reported on the Meals on Wheels program which distributes dinners to Senior Citiz ens in Grand Bend. Everything seems to be running smoothly with ap- proximately fifteen meals being delivered each Wednesday from the Green Forest, Any Seniors in- terested in receiving these meals should contact Nancy. Lioness Judy Thurman, discussed the upcoming dance to be held October 4th at the Dashwood Community Centre. A disc Jockey has been booked and there will be lunch served. Cost is .$8.00 a couple with tickets still available from any Lioness Member, 4-H club news Grand Bend 4-11 club number one held meeting four, Roll call was answered by "What method other members use to prepare chicken cacciatore", Saucy franks and pizzas were made at this meeting. Discussion was on toaster and microwave ovens. These girls have chosen the club name of "Crazy Crepes". Reported by Rose Van- denberk. Grand Bend 4-H club number two met last Wed- nesday evening at Norma Walper's home. Roll call was, "Anything interesting from other members roll call." Grand Bend 4-H club number three, held meeting two at Laura Desjardine's home. Mexican type food , was experimented with as the girls learned to make tacos and tortillas. United Church news Guest minister at the United church morning service was Rev. Glen McPherson of Beachville. His sermon title was "Head in the sand Christians", with scripture from Genesis 4, selected verses. Rev. Harley Moore con- ducted services today at West Oxford United Church who were celebrating their 176th anniversary. For your information, the Hope Telephone Distress Centre, a service of the Social Service Bureau, from 8:00 p.m. to 12 a.m. daily, at 336-3000 is available. Trained volunteers, who listen, and care, are at your service. No problem is too big or too small. Church of God The Church of God young people met Friday evening at the church with 12 in at- tendance. Rev. J. Campbell conducted a study period on values. A time of fellowship and lunch was enjoyed after the meeting. The young folks practised some music which they played at the Sunday evening worship service, Services at the Bluewater Rest home Sunday night was conducted by Rev. J. Campbell and Rev. R. Simpson was the speaker. Bridge winners Five tables of duplicate bridge were in play, Wed- nesday evening, at St. John's Parish hall. Winners were north -south, Sue Baumgartner and Betty Hoyle, east-west, Dorthy Childs and Joan Gosselin. Bible hour meets The inner-denominational ladies coffee Bible hour was held last Thursday morning at Mr. Ruth DeBrum's home, with 17 in attendance, The meeting for this week on October 2nd, 9:30 a.m. will be held at Mrs. Eleanor Hayter's home at 39 Orchard St. All ladies welcome and bring a friend. Moore and Bob Southcott, from Grand Bend pastoral charge attended a Presbytery meeting last Tuesday at Trinity United church, Listowel. Rev. Moore gave a report on the 28th General Council that he attended in August, at Halifax, Nova Scotia. Mr. and Mrs. Clarke Kennedy and Mrs. Jean Snell of Exeter, attended the in- duction service Sunday evening at Kitchener, when Rev. Rob Ferguson, (for- merly of Ajax), was inducted as assistant minister at St. Andrew's Presbyterian church. Services from there are televised every other week. Anyone interested in taking the Crewel em- broidery course that is to be sponsored by Grand Bend Women's Institute in November, please contact Mrs. Larry Lovie at 238-8395. This course is prepared by the Home Economics branch of the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and F000d. Mrs, Clarke Kennedy and son Jim have returned from a two week holiday in Vancouver, B.C. with Eliz abeth Kennedy. Highlights were visits to Queen Eliz abeth park, Stanley Park and Butchart Gardens. On their return journey a stop over was made in Calgary where Jim had an interview at the University there. Irene spent a week in Toronto with her sister Mrs. S.M. Barbour before returning home to Grand Bend, Mr. & Mrs. George Buckingham, spent a few days last week with Mr. & - Mrs. Roy Flear.
