Winghom two-.straight By ROSS HAUGH With only a week to go the race for the pennant in the National league eastern division is as close as it can possibly get; As this is, being written, the Montreal Expos lead the Philadelphia Phillies by a half game, but the Phillies have one extra game to go and if they win that contest the battle would be all tied up. The decision will certainly be made this weekend at Olympic Stadium in Montreal when the two con- tenders meet head-on in a three game series. The Expos would appear to have the edge with the apparent home team advantage, but, don't count on it. The Montreal club seems to have more speed and possibly a little more desire as they strive for a divisional title for the first time. What the Phillies have going for them is ex- perience with fellows like Pete Rose, the outstanding example of hustle himself. While the Ni eastern championship will likely boil down to the final three games between the two con- tenders, two also-rans could have a big say in the out- come. The Phillies will be up against the Chicago Cubs for four games early this week while the Expos have a set of three with the St. Louis Cardinals. It is quite conceivable that the whole thing could end in a tie. If that happens a sudden-death playoff game would be, played next Monday. If the Expos prevail and win their division cham- pionship the first two games of the National league final will be played next Tuesday and Wednesday nights, October 7 and 8 at Olympic Stadium in Mon- treal. The third and fourth games would then switch to the west and go on the afternoons of October 10 and 11. If a fifth game is necessary it will be played again in the west, but, as a night game. That will be either in Houston or Los Angeles. In the American league, the west division cham- pion will be at home for the first two games on the afternoon of October 8 and the night of October 9. The series then moves to the east, likely Yankee Stadium for night games October 10 and 11 and a day game October 12. The first two games of the 1980 World Series will be played in the park of the National League winners on the nights of October 14 and 15. The third, fourth and garr.ls will go in the. 4.niam.an league m .1.1; ,her lo wit/ tarting times of 8 :LS p.m., 1:15 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively, Late last week a number of tickets for home games for the Expos in the National league final and World Series were still available. They were in the 600 and 700 levels which are fairly high up, Ticket information can be obtained by calling 1-515-253-3434 - Extension 311. We know of one person who has playoff tickets on the way by courier. A speedy recovery We would like to wish area harness horse trainer and driver Jim Wallace a speedy recovery from a rather serious and painful injury of a week ago. Wallace who now resides in Crediton was involved in an accident in the tenth race at Clinton on Sunday, September 20. Only two of the seven starting horses were able to finish the race. Wallace was thrown from his sulky and stepped on by another horse. While it appears he had no broken bones, he has suffered torn muscles in his back and up to the weekend was only able to get around with the help of a walker. Hockey season With baseball and football with us still with us, a lot of hockey teams are either starting league play or getting into practice sessions. Dave Shaw and Tom Coates of last year's Exeter champion midgets have signed with the Stratford Cullitons and are expected to be important cogs in that city's junior "B" team. Stratford coach Jack Nairn told us Thursday night that he expects the two local youngsters to be stalwarts on his blueline brigade, Nairn who is starting his sixth year as coach of the Cullitons said this is the youngest team he has ever had. He added, "We will likely lose three through age for next year." Four others from Exeter are trying their luck at hockey on the collegiate scene. Perry and Paul Pooley with considerable Junior "A" experience behind them are at Ohio State while Dave Bogart and Brian Mercer Sports Spotlight Midgets‘..capture WOAA title consecutive year by defeating Wingham in two. straight games. Exeter won the opening. ground gainer for the Panthers with 112 yards on 16 cracks at the line. Greg Hern was next with 50 yards on 11 rushes and Tony Jones was good for 17 yards on only two runs. Quarterback Chris Van Gerwen was good on one of six pass attempts good for 35 yards. It was caught by Tony Jones. Van Gerwen also punted four times with an average of 31 yards. One of the key tackles of the day was made by Scott Turnbull of the Panthers when he stopped a Listowel ball carrier on a third down from the South Huron one yard line and prevented- a touchdown. Leading the team defensively with five tackles apiece were Turnbull, SteVe Fergusson, Scott Batten and Dale Jones. South Huron accomplished 15 first downs compared to only seven for Listowel. Handy seniors win In the senior game, South Huron scored early and often to ring up the lopsided vic- tory. Coach Ron Bogart's comments were, "For us it was very well executed game, both on offence and defence. Listowel never got over our 45 yard line throughout the whole game." Doug Fisher counted the first SH touchdown in the first quarter on a 35 yard pass and run play from quarterback Dave Bell.
