Spotlight
By ROSS HAUGH
The added attraction at the September 14 baseball
game at CNE Stadium between the Toronto Blue Jays
and Baltimore Orioles will be some humour.
Before someone suggests the play of the Jays this
year has sometimes become funny, we would say the
Toronto team has made a big improvement on their
play of a year ago.
Getting back to the September 14 game, Max
Patkin the clown prince of baseball will bring his zany
antics to Toronto.
A former Class A pitcher in the Eastern league,
Patkin has been entertaining baseball fans throughout
North America for the past 34 years with his hilarious
comic routine,
Over the past few seasons, Patkin has appeared in
front of more than two million people each season as
he conducts his tour of one night stands throughout ball
parks from the Class A to major league level.
His talents have been highlighted on numerous
television programs including the pre-game show
prior to the fifth game of the 1975 World Series, More
recently, he was on Mel Allen's "Baseball This Week"
program a few weeks ago,
This will be Patkin's first ever'appearance at CNE
Stadium as local fans will finally have an opportunity
to see this renowned entertainer.
Dressed in oversize uniform, Patkin delivers his
on-field antics from the coaching boxes where he
provides the umpires and opposition teams with all
they can handle,
His appearance will enable fans to combine an
afternoon of comedy with some great baseball as the
pennant contending Baltimore Orioles pay their final
visit of the season to Toronto.
As of the time of writing, the Blue Jays are a full
12 games ahead of their performance of 1979 with 58
victories and 77 losses. They need only seven wins to
assure themselves of less than 100 losses.
Unless they fall completely on their faces, in the
final 29 games, the Blue Jays, will enjoy their best
season of their young four year career.
Their best season to date was in 1978 when they
won 59 games and they should beat that mark this year
by a considerable number.
On this year's performance it should appear the
Toronto club needs about five additional top notch
players and they could be a serious contender.
They could use two more good starting pitchers to
go with Dave Stieb, Jim Clancy and Luis Leal and
another good reliever.
Needed is another outfielder to team with Lloyd
Moseby and Bob Bailor, a solid hitting first baseman
to replace the aging and ailing John Mayberry and a
first line catcher.
In recent games, catcher Ernie Whitt has been im-
proving, but, a steady hitting catcher is needed.
Rookie Brian Milner is expected to be exactly what the
Jays need behind the plate, but, not for a year of two.
The most heard of complaint about the Blue Jays
management is their apparent hesitance to get better
players by trades or the free agency method.
This is not as easy as it looks. Most experienced
ball players have a say where they will be traded to
and the same goes of course for a free agent.
It's only common sense that a name player would
not want to join a cellar dwelling team. The same
situation existed in Montreal until a year or two ago
when the Expos started to show some hope of being a
contender.
During the next two years we are sure the Blue
Jays farm system will produce two or three of the six
players needed and then a big name star or two should
do the trick.
Nearing title
The Exeter juveniles are now within one game of
winning the Ontario Baseball Association juvenile
championship.
After winning in McGregor Saturday afternoon by
a score of 9-7, the locals were defeated 10-7 in
Dashwood Sunday night.
The third and deciding game of the best-of-three
finals will beplayed Dashwood Sunday afternoon at 2
p.m.
A goodly number of Exeter fans were on hand Sun-
day night and another good crowd should be at the
Dashwood park Sunday to hopefully see the cham-
pionship won.
Best luck in Sunday's bid for the provincial title to
manager Bruce Shaw, coach Joe Fulop and the. Exeter
juveniles.
Hockey soon
In talking to Exeter Hawks manager Fred
Mommersteeg Sunday we learned the local junior "D"
hockey club is organizing for another season.
With only three players graduating from last
year's club, Momtnersteeg said he expected the 1980-
81 club to be very competitive.
The first practice for the Hawks has been set for
Sunday, September 21 at the Stephen township arena
at Huron Park from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
The next workouts will be from 8 to 9 p.m. on
September 2 and 27 and October 3 and 4 and October 5
from 12 noon to 2 p.m.
The first workout at the South Huron Rec Centre
will be Tuesday, October 7.
lions Are Roaring
We know that one game a season does not make,
but supporters of the Detroit Lions in the NFL appear
to have finally found something to cheer about.
It was not only the fine play of rookie running back
Billy Sims, but, the entire team was needed to mould
Sunday's upset win over the Rams.
The Lions now have a one-two punch in the
backfield in Sims and Dexter Bussey. The latter who
will certainly complement the play of Sims with fine
blocking in addition to his running gained more than
100 yards in Sunday's game.
Sims and I3ussey with their good performances
Sunday provided the first two 100 yard runners for the
Lions in one game since 1934.
We will be at Silverdome in Pontiac on. Sunday,
September 21 to see the Lions meet the St. Louis Car-
dinals and certainly hope they play back to Sunday's
efforts.

The Exeter club opened
the scoring in the first inning
as Dave Bogart was safe on
an error and came around to
score on consecutive walks
to Joe Becker, Kevin Hern
and Dave Shaw.
In the Exeter fifth, Joe
Becker drew a walk, stole
second and was sent home on
a single from the bat of Dave
Shaw.
After McGregor took a 9-2
lead in the top of the seventh,
the locals bounced back with
three runs to get a little
closer,
The big blow was Dave
Shaw's trip, to right field
with Dave Bogart, Joe
Becker and Kevin Hern
aboard. Bogart was on with a
well placed bunt, Becker
walked and Hern cracked
out a sharp single.
In the Exeter eighth,
Kevin Easterbrook led off
with a double, Dave
Woodward drew a walk and
both were able to score on
singles delivered by Dave
Bogart. and Dave Shaw.
Dave Shaw was the
starting pitcher for Exeter.
He was touched for seven
runs and six hits in six in-
nings. Steve Pearce came on
to toss the final three
frames. ,He gave up three
runs and the same number of
hits.
Dave Bogart and Dave
Shaw with hits in their last
three trips to the' plate led
the Exeter batting attack.
