Now a plant breeder at Agriculture Canada's Harrow, Ont., Research Station is trying to overcome this problem bybreedingnew nectarine varieties suited to the Canadian climate. "Many people think a nectarine is a cross between a peach and a plum," says Dick Layne, a tree fruit breeder at the -Harrow station. "But it's really only a peach that lacks the fuzz because of a mutant gene.
