The recent fastball exhibition game between the
Milverton. Suns ladies team and the Zurich Buckeyes
men's team in Hensall was successful.
The Milverton girls showed everyone the brand of
ball they are capable of playing.
A number of spectators indicated their disapoint"
merit that the teams actually played only two innings
tagainst each ether before switching pitchers and
catchers with the ladies batting against their own
pitchers and vice versa with the men,
There was a very plausible reason for the change.
Milverton manager Bob Harrow was very concerned
about having any of his pitchers injured by throwing
the ball to the male hitters from distance of only 40
feet.
Before the game Harrow was uneasy about even
going two innings and his fears were heightened in the
first inning when a Zurich batter lined a hard drive
back to the mound. Luckily pitcher Gail Beurerman
was able to get her glove up in time, but, the outcome
could have been much different,
Harrow explained to us, "You must remember
that most girls weigh about 135 pounds at the most and
cannot hit the ball as hard as a man who has much
more weight and strength. Being seven feet closer to
the batter sure increases the danger."
Despite the abbreviated game as far as the two
teams completely were concerned, we hope most fans
were satisfied with the exhibition. They were able to
see that the girls do play an exciting and very capable
brand of ball,
Next year local fans will be able to see the Suns in
action in regular league conditions.
Directors of the Hensall Fair Board, sponsors of
the recent game have already made arrangements
with Bob Harrow to include Hensall on the schedule
for 1981, most likely in a game against the ladies team
from Buffalo, New York.
Harrow said he was impressed with the atten-
dance at the exhibition game in Hensall and would be
pleased to bring his team back next year and show
what his club can do against top notch opponents.
Lynne Farquhar of Exeter and Iris Marshall,
formerly of Kirkton are regular members of the Suns
this' year and two other local girls Patti Down and
Sheila Penhale are with the Milverton junior team.
So it looks as if this area should have representa-
tion on the Suns club for a number of years to come.
The Milverton girls won the Ontario championship
last year and hosted the Canadian finals. Bob Harrow
told us Tuesday night that Milverton drew the largest
crowds the Canadian championships have ever drawn.
This year the Canadian finals are being played in
Hull, Quebec starting on August 19.
While Miilverton will not be representing Ontario,
their star pitcher Luanne Izzard of Kitchener has been
added to the Agincourt team which will represent On-
tario in Hull.
In the recent Ontario provincial finals, Milverton
bowed out early due to what Harrow described as their
inability to get key hits. He added, "A hit or two in the
right place could have put us instead of Agincourt".'
Eight games in the championships were decided by 1.0
scores.
The girls game features good pitching and fielding
and speed on the bases rather than a lot of hitting.
The ladies rules allow for a lot of designated hit-
ting and running. Lynne Farquhar is used by the
Milverton club in a lot of pinch running rules.
The rules allow for any starting player except the
pitcher to return to the game and her regular position
after being lifted for a pinch batter or runner.
Lynne told us recently that some managers even
have ways of getting around this rule that does not
allow a pitcher to be repla6ed after being lifted.
We believe she said the Milverton club has started
the regular first baseman on the mound for the first
, batter with the girls slated to pitch starting at first
base,
After the first batter, the two postitions are
switched back to normal and the pitcher who did start
as one of the other eight players can be substituted for
and still return because she didn't start as the pitcher,
We can see this being a good thing with one excep-
tion. Let's just consider a hypothetical situation.
The first batter in the game could hit a home run
off the starting pitcher who in this case is the regular
first baseman and the way some of the ladies games go
the final score could be 1-0.
Good tourney on tap
The Exeter and district recreation fastball league
is sponsoring a tournament this weekend at Exeter
community park.
A total of 12 teams will be competing with the first
game slated to get underway at 9 a.m. The finals will
be played Sunday evening.

league and two each from Seaforth, Zurich and Clin-
ton.
Molsoe's Breweries will be providing prizes and a
