clear the way for you. That's
what Shamim Marani has
learned. The attractive 20
year old is following her
brother's foot steps and
plans to become a phar-
macist just as he is. Her
brother, ES'mail Marani
owns and operates Guardian
Drugs in Exeter.
This summer Shamim is
getting a taste of the drug
store business. She is
working for her brother as a
clerk, and keeps busy
stocking shelves and running
the cash register.
Studying to become a
pharmacist isn't easy. The
first step is the hardest -
finding a school where you
can take the course. Shamim
says that there are only
seven universities in Canada
where you can take a
pharmacy course, and only
one of these is in Ontario - the

University of Toronto. The
competition is quite high to
get into U of T., Shamim
explains. "You need a 99
percent average," she says.
Like her brother before
her, Shamim is taking
pharmacy at the Robert
Gordon Institute of
Technology in Aberdeen,
Scotland. She has completed
the first year of her training
and will return in the fall.
She has three more years of
study, and then she will have
to work 'for a pharmacist for
one year before she is fully
qualified..
Shamim was born in
Kenya and came 'to Canada
with her family three and a
half years ago. Her parents
live in Toronto. She took
grades 12 and 13 in Toronto,
and then went to the
University of Toronto for one
year.
She says she prefers the
Scottish college because the
classes are much smaller
and less formal. It is one of
the best schools of pharmacy
in Britain, and students
come from England and
Wales to attend, Sliamim
says.
She also says she enjoys'
the social life very much.
There are discos arranged
by the college, as well as
movies once every two
weeks. She likes sports such
as tennis and badminton and
there is a beach near by. A
trace of a Scottish accent can
be heard in some of her
words as she talks' about
Aberdeen.
Although she is looking
forward to getting back to
Scotland she is enjoying her
summer in Exeter, she says.
She is staying with her
brother and sister-in-law.
She has managed to get in a
trip to Grand Bend to visit
the beach, but most
weekends she goes home to
Toronto to see her family.
