Two ARC Industries employeei
among canvassers for fund
By MARY WARBURTQN
The Flowers of Hope cam,
paign for the South Harm
and District Association for
the Mentally Handicapped
(SHDAMH) is drawing to a
close for this year. Ex..:
eeutive director of the
association, Don Campbell,
is optimistic that they will
reach their $13,000 goal. Last
year the canvass brought
$12,437.
"It's good weather for
canvassing and mast in-
dications seem quite
favourable," Campbell said.
Canvassing began on May 11.
The association serves the
area north of Londesboro,
south, to Arkona, east to
Seaforth and west to Lake
Huron, There are 200 to 250
canvassers for the area and
30 area captains. Campbell
said that this area is one of
the most active of the 124
local associations in On-
tario.
"We are very fortunate-in
the number of canvassers
we have this year. It really
requires a lot of dedication
on their part," Campbell
said. Two of the canvassers
are employees of the Adult
Rehabilitation Centre (ARC
Industries) in Dashwood.
The canvassers have been
going door to door asking for
donations in return for
packages of marigold seeds
they are distributing. The
marigold seeds were
packaged by employees of
ARC Industries,
Campbell pointed out that
SHDAMH is an autonomous
body and does not receive
financial assistance from
the Cash for Life Lottery
which is sponsored by
SHDAN1H's founder, the
Ontario Association for the
Mentally Retarded. With an
exception of a small affilia-
tion fee, all proceeds from
the campaign are used to
help the handicapped from
this area.
The Flowers of Hope cam-
paign is the major fund-
raising activity of the
association. Provincial
government grants con-
tribute toward operating and
administrative costs. Local
councils contribute toward
the nursery costs of children
attending from their
Municipality. Rut the
balance of expenses must be
covered by volunteer con-
tributions.
Campbell said, "The
Flower of Hope campaign is
also a more personal way of
providing information to the
community about the men-
tally handicapped."
The association provides
several facilities for the
mentally handicapped in the
area. Besides ARC In-
dustries, there are two
residences in Exeter, five
apartments in Exeter and
Clinton, South Huron Bake
Shop and Huron Hope
Nursery in Dashwood and
Huron Hope School in Huron
Park, Altogether the
facilities serve 117 han-
dicapped people.
Campbell said that then
moneyfrom the campaign is
needed to expand the current
programs and to increase
their quality. He said there
are still handicapped people
at home and in institutions,
Mental handicapisrn isn't
caused mainly by genetic
conditions. There are over
250 known reasons for it.
Nearly 50 per cent of
existing eases could be
prevented with better health
services and more public
awareness.
