Midgets *in over juveniles Pearce is third at high school meet The Exeter midgets scored. a 13-6 'victory over the Exeter juveniles in an exhibition baseball game, Thursday. • The midgets scored five runs in the first inning on, hits by Bruce Shaw, Greg Prout, Pete Tuckey and Jeff Rowe Good show Saturday The 13th annual Mid- Western Quarter Horse Show will be held this Satur- day, June 7 at the Exeter saddle club grounds, just south of Huron Park. This show continues year after year to be the largest annual breed show in Western Ontario and con- sistently receives a Class "A" rating from the American Quarter Horse Association. The all-day show starts at 8:30 a.m. with 17 divisions of halter classes. The after- boon programs has some of the more exciting action in- cluding barrel races, rein- ing, western riding and pole bending. - The judge 'for the show will be Steve Arbaugh of Mansfield, 'Ohio; Wayne Longfield, Thamesford is ring steward; Dr. Gary Balsdori is the attendant veterinarian, Ken McLellan is the announcer, Brenda Jackson is the show manager and Jack Malone is , chairman of the show and contest committee for the saddle club. Hawks still in first spot As a result of action in the, Exeter and area men's rec fastball league this past week, the Hawks continue to hold down the top spot with a l two point edge over theirl nearest competitor. The rapidly maturing youngsters stretched their unbeaten string to six games Monday when they clob- bered Usborne 12-3. Alone• in second spot is Hensall with 10 points on the strength of five wins and two defeats. Victims of the village squad Monday were tenth place Dashwood Industries who were ham- mered 12-1. Just a point behind in third spot with a nine points 'are the Crescent Rolls who played McKnights to 6-6 draw Monday in Hensall. McKnights are in seventh place. The team from Gords Variety continue to have a good season as they im- proved their record to four wins and three losses with 18- 9 victory/over sixth place Mt. Carmel. In games played last Wednesday the Hawks trounced McKnights 11-7. Mt. Carmel blasted DIL 14-2 and Gords defaulted to the Crescent Rolls. off .the offerings of starter Brian Rader. They came right back in the second inning with five More runs, Hits were delivered by Bruce Shaw, Pete Tuckey and Jamie Chaffe. They were aided by four bases on balls' fiom Rader. Pete Tuckey's triple, his third hit of the game scored a single run in the fifth and hits by Dave Shaw, Greg Front and Rick Fletcher chased 'the final two runs home In the seventh. The juveniles scored their first run in the opening in- ning on a single by Brian Mercer and three passed balls, They added three in the third on a triple by Harold Borden, a double by Kevin Easterbrook and a single from Brian Mercer. Dave Atthill's solo home run in the fourth added a run and a walk and two stolen bases by Wayne Parsons produced the final run in the fifth. Brian Horner, Dave Shaw and Rob Watson pitched for the midgets while Brian , Rader, Kevin Easterbrook, Jeff Fuller and Dave Robinson shared duties for the juveniles. The second half, however, was a reversal of form from the first with the Rangers not being able to generate a sustained offence due to strong midfield play by the Falcons led by Mike Klein. Taxandria got back on even terms with goals by Mike Beynen and Mike Klein. With time running out it appeared as if the Rangers had secured a tie, but, with Taxandria pressing, the Rangers failed to clear a left wing cross and Mike Beynen popped the winner with a deflection that left the goal keeper with no chance. 111111 The Kirkton midget girls fastball team scored two victories this week in regular scheduled play. Tuesday they squeaked past Mount Brydges .10-9 and Thursday they blanked Kensal Park 8-0. This weekend the Kirkton . Motocross al Varna Motocross -action returns to Hully Gully, Sunday with the Di-Jer Ontario Championships. Top school boy and junior athletes will be battling it out for trophies and points towards the provincial crown. Intermission entertain- ment will include a grudge race between CKNX DJ's and Hully Gully personnel on the new Gully Buggies. Spectators will also have a chance to watch the races from the air as helicopter rides will be available thoroughout the day. He tied Leone Brock on Thursday with.two wins, and aggregate of 24 and a plus of two. Percy Campbell was close behind with an aggregate of 23 with his two wins, while following , in order were Stan Mitchell, Edith Love, Gordon Hoggarth and Len McKnight. • Rogerson took Saturday night's feature with a narror# win over Walter Spencer and Wilma Kleinhaar. All three had two wins, an aggregate of 23 but Rogerson had a plus of six. Bill Lamport placed behind the top three. In Tuesday's action, Len McKnigh6 and Liz Lamport shared honors with two wins, an aggregate of 26 and a plus of two. Following them were Leone Brock, Walter Spencer and Bill Rogerson. with two out toiscore three runs. 1Vlarg Miller after being hit by a pitch in her first two trips to the plate followed with a double the next time up. Mount Brydges scored five runs in the top of the fifth to close the gap to 10-9, but, the Kirkton girls held on for the win. In Thursday's win over Kensal Park Brenda Iredale, Patti Willis and Joan Uleh shared pitching duties for Xirkton. Brenda Iredale was also tops at the plate with two for two. Joan Cooper and Jane Simpson each hit two singles. Getting one hit' apiece were Marg Miller, Sharon Rundle, Sandra Fletcher and Cheryl Cann. Despite his second best throw ever, South Huron District High School javelin thrower Steve Pearce finished third in the OFSAA regional track and field meet held on Saturday in Windsor. Pearce's throw of 53,25 metres qualified him for the OFSSA finals this Friday in Toronto, He said he was quite pleased with his per- formance which took place in extremely windy con- ditions. Cowgirls win easily The Crediton Cowgirls scored a decisive 21-3 vic- tory over Denfield Thursday night in their only start this week in the district ladies fastball league, The game was played in Arva. Merna Scott went the full five innings on the mound for Crediton and retired.the first 12 Denfield batters in order before they scored their only three runs in the-fifth inning. Deb Lord led the Cowgirls at th7 plate with four hits in- cluding 'a home run. Sandy O'Neill was next with three hits. Getting two apiece were Shelley Weber, Merna Scott and Wilma Lagerwerf. The Cowgirls swing back into action Thursday night in Huron Park against St. Peters and will be at home Monday night at 9 p.m, against East Williams. Also travelling to the Ontario finals will be middle distance runner Alice. Dietrich, Dietrich placed fifth in the midget girls 800 metres with a time of 132. Placing first in the event was Deb Mit- chelmore of Goderich, Not qualifying for OFSSA but nevertheless coming up with fine performances were Helen Muller who placed ninth in the senior girls 100 metre hurdles and Dorothy Van Esbroeck who had a similar placing in the senior ladies 3,000 metres.
