Big shows coming up
Within the next six weeks two of the most popular
horse show events will be held in this area.
First is the 13th annual Midwestern Quarter Horse
Show which is being held this Saturday at the Exeter
Saddle club grounds at Huron Park.
This will be followed by the weekend of July 19 and
20 by the 'born' again Exeter rodeo.
Sponsored by the Stephen Optimists with the co-
operation of High Country Rodeo of Collingwood and
Molson's the rodeo is being revived after an absence
of two years.
Back to the Mid-Western Quarter Horse show
Saturday, it continues to be the largest annual breed
show in Western Ontario.
This usually appealing event includes many color-
ful and exciting performance and gymkhana (games)
classes which thrill and delight the whole family.
Here is a rare opportunity to witness some of
North America's finest quarter horses in action. This
show consistently receives an "A" rating from the
American Quarter Horse Association.

Cup semi-finals only to lose.
Urbshott blamed the lack
of quality hockey talent on
the demise of the Jets. He
said this week, "From
Christmas on we could see
the hand-writing on the wall.
There are not enough.
players in the area to sup-
port two teams. One had to
go."
He continued, "We need at
least seven local players to
mould a team around and we
didn't have them. All we
could come up with this year
were Jamie and Ed Robb,
Randy Kraul and Dave
Revington."
Urbshott said he could see
the end for the Jets when the
league Igan challenging for
the Allan Cup.
The only true amateur
team to win the Allan Cup in
the last 15 years was
Petrolia. Brantford and
Spokane were paying money
for the Allan Cup and as far
as I am concerned Cam-
bridge is doing the same
thing. ,I have to admire
Petrolia for their
philosophy."
The Jets manager for most
of their time said he believes
hockey runs in cycles and he
foresees the day when the
Jets will start again, likely in
intermediate "B".
Two others closely
associated with the Jets
talked about the sadness of
the situation. Elvy Urbshott
who was the team's voice
from the stands said, "It's a
sad day and the end of an
era."
Former player and coach
Pete Loveless commented,
"It's a sad state of affairs
when the Jets fold. They
were an institution in this
area as far as intermediate
and senior hockey was
concerned."
Bergman
wins again
Ken Bergman fired a 37 to
win low gross honours in the
"A" flight at Tuesday's
Ironwood men's golf club
competition. It was the se-
cond straight win for
Bergman. Don Cowan took
the low net award.
In the "B" flight, Brad
Murray carded the low gross
score and the best in net was
Dick Vanderwald.
The low gross prize in "C"
flight went to Mac
MacDougall while Brad
Datars was the low net
winner.
Bill McLean and Gord
McTavish took the low gross
and low net 'prizes, respec-
tively and Wally Burton won
the prize for a shot closest to
the hole.
Saveway lose, two games.
One of the most successful
intermediate and senior
hockey teams in Ontario
over the past 12 years has
called it quits.
The Lucan-Ilderton Jets
dropped out of the Ontario
Hockey Assocation Con-
tinental Senior league
Thursday. Only two days
earlier, the Preston Jesters.
dropped out of competition.
Both clubs were charter
members and . the league
was formed in the summer of
1972.
One of the leading
organizers for the Con-
tinental league was Don
Urbshott, Ilderton insurance
executive who was the
guiding light for the Jets far'
most of their 12 years
existence.
Urbshott and Steve Storey
of Lucan started the Jets
with the renmants of the old
Lucan-Ilderton Combines
and they went on to win the
OHA intermediate "B"
championship with the final
game at the Huron Park
arena on Sunday afternoon,
April 26, 1970.
Jim Bender's goal in the
second period of overtime
gave the Jets the title over a
tough Napanee team.
The Jets fared very well in
their first few years in the
Continental league and won
the championship in 1972-73
and 1974-75.
The latter season was
probably the best for the Jets
as they went on to meet the
Barrie Flyers in the Allan
Russell wins
at Claybird
Tom Russell fired a per-
fect 25 to win Wednesday's
shoot at the claybird gun
club.
Next came Wayne Riddell
with 23, Bill Cochrane 21, Bill
Weber 20, Jim Romphf 17
and Neal Romphf and Larry
Zwaan followed by Mark
Wilds,
Sunday at the practice
range "Drybull" Mason with
his Kentucky flint lock rifle
outshot Andy Calder, Ed
Lindenfield, Jim Bishop,
Russ Beaver and John Blyde
who used cap lock muzzle
loaders.
The club shoots trap every
Wednesday night and hand
gun, skeet and muzzle
loaders Sunday afternoons.
Everyone is welcome to

Sad day
The announcement Thursday that the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets were dropping out of the Ontario Hockey
Association Continental Senior League comes as no
surprise, but, is saddening just the same.
During the past 12 years, the Jets were one of the
strongest teams in intermediate and senior ranks
throughout the province of Ontario.
They won the OHA intermediate "B" cham-
pionship in 1969-70 and manager Don Urbshott was
partly responsible for formation of the senior Con-
tintental league two years later.
The Jets won the Continental title in 1972-73 and
again in 1974-75.
The Jets finished out of the Continental playoffs
the past two years and the handwriting was on the wall
as to their existence.
In making the announcement last week, Don
Urbshott said, "We just couldn't compete in that
calibre of hockey. It was a lack of players from-the
local area that hurt us. We used to have eight or nine
players from Ilderton or Lucan. This last year it boiled
to only Jamie and Ed Robb, Randy Kraul and Dave
Revington."
Urbshott's wife Elvie who was the Jet's leading
cheerleader during the championship days summed it
up this way. "It's the end of a great era anda real sad
day.'
Elvie agreed with her husband saying, "We knew
it was coming. We were out of our bracket and just
couldn't compete."
Pete Loveless who coached the club this past
season added, "it's a sad state of affairs. The -Jets.
were an institution in, this area as far as intermediate-
and senior hockey was concerned,"
Area fans owe a lot of thanks to the Jets through
the past 12 years and especially fellows like Don
Urbshott and Steve Storey who organized the club
from the nucleus of the old Lucan-Ilderton Combines,
which folded in 1967.
Success in sports seems to go in cycles, so, maybe
we can look forward to a return of the Jets in the not
too distant future.
The last of the champs
It was rather a sad day in Tiger Stadium Friday
when John Hiller announced his retirement.
A native of the Toronto area, John Hiller has been
one of the best relief pitchers in baseball over the last
more than a dozen years.
Hiller's retirement completely wipes out the
roster of the 1968 World Series champion Tiger club.
The only other player still going from that team is
Willie Horton and he is now with Seattle.
Hiller set a number of records coming out of the
bull pen for the Tigers, included is the mark of the most
saves in one year.
He is probably best known for a phenomenal
recovery from a heart attack. He was sidelined with
the heart condition in January of 1971.
He bounced back in 1972 to set a major league
record with 38 saves and finishes with an overall
record of 87 wins and 76 losses and a Tiger club record
of 125 saves.
The Hiller retirement was announced after the
third inning at Tiger Stadium Friday and he received a
standing ovation for almost four minutes.
High schoolers coming home
Saturday, June 21 will be a big day at South Huron
District High School.
It's Homecoming Day and celebration of the
school's 75th anniversary.
From the advanced sale of tickets it appearS a
large number of students will be coming back to reneW
acquaintances.
The hard working committee headed by teacher
Doug Ellison and 1979-80 student council president
Mike Burke has lined up an activity filled program
beginning at 8 a.m. with a pancake breakfast at the
Exeter firehall.
A number of old-timer sporting events are being
lined up. Athletic staff members Pat Rowe and Terry
O'Rourke are in charge of arranging the oldtlMer
games for the afternoon. These include girls and boys
basketball, girls field hockey, boys wrestling and
soccer.
A reunion of football players over the years will be
held in the school cafeteria at 4:30 p.m,
The day winds up with a chicken barbecue at 4:30
p.m. and a dance starting at 8:30 p.m. Both of the
latter events will be held at the South Huron Rec Cen-
tre.
Exeter Saveway were on
