Klein-Westland Farm is
located on part of Lot 12,
Lake Road East Concession
in Bosanquet township which
was completely covered by
bush some 28 years ago.
Klein-Westland farm
owned and operated by Jerry
and Mathilda VanLeeuwen
,and family is now very in-
strumental in the vegetable
and flower industry.
Jerry Van Leeuwen
purchased the property in
1952. Having arrived from
his' native Holland only a
year before he started
clearing the property on
weekends while holding a
steady construction job at
RCAF Clinton.
By 1965 Van Leeuwen had
managed to clear the entire
65 acres. Of this 45 acres are
now under cultivation.
In the early days, the
VanLeeuvren's started
lettuce and) celery in plastic
a

greenhouses and tran-
splanted the plants to their
own lands.
In recent years there has
been a move to more per-
manent greenhouses, now
four in total with floor space
of 1,000 square feet each.
The VanLeeuwen's now
have more than 1,000 flats
containing 55 flower plants
each which are ready. for
sale. These include petunias,
marigolds, snapdragons,
salvia `and alyssum:
Also ready to be sold tO
area flower buffs are
geraniums in pots and a very
rare tropical plant. Officially
it is the Dracaena, but, is
better known as the spike
plant.
Van Leeuwen has a 10
year-old spike plant which is
more than 12 feet in height
and some 500 one year-old
plants about six inches high
which are ready for sale.
Klein-Westland farm is
becoming well known as a
producer of seed potatoes.'
Seven different varieties are
grown on the Grand Bend
area farm. Most are planted
in mid-May and harvesting
takes place from early
August to late October
depending on variety.
Asked if his entire crop has
sold each yeat for seed
purposes, Van Leeuwen said,
"Yes, They are all gone now.
The last 25 bags went on
April 29."
Van Leeuwen estimates
there are about 1,400 potato
producers in the province of
Ontario. He added, "There
are about •700 with acreages
over five acres and about the
