VALID ONLY WED. & THURS. NIGHT, MAY 6 & 7, 1980. a ,May '7, 1980 High fashion and patriotism featured at Cancer Society show By MARY. ALDERSON Patriotism and high fashion went hand in hand last Tuesday night during the grand finale to an en- tertaining three hours. A fashion show put on by Merry Rags boutique con- cluded with a salute to the Canadian flag. All thirteen models took part dressed in red and white, under a cascade of balloons The red and white dresses, skirts, suits and pant outfits highlighted an evening which stressed the jux- taposition and contrast in this year's fashions. During the show the models also demonstrated how the past still influences many of our fashions. About 1300 people attended the showing entitled "Silhouettes of Summer" at South Huron Rec Centre in Exeter. Tickets sold for $5 and all proceeds are going to the Canadian Cancer Society. The show was produced by George Georgopoulos of Universal Mannequenn. Georgopo- ulos brought six professional models with him, while seven local women com- pleted the show,Models, from the Exeter area were Kay Carruthers, Wendy Andrews-Elliott, Mary Fisher, Dean Frayne, Joy Hogg, Rose Marie Maertens and. Nancy Michaud, - Organizer Carfrey Cann said that they, were very' pleased with the large, turn- out. The big crowd created parking difficulties around the rec centre and several drivers were asked to move their cars from fire routes by the fire chief. Making a comeback this summer are the good, old pedal pushers of the late fifties. The pedal pushers, also called clam diggers, are, tight pants, cut off just below the knee. Sometimes a tiny slit is put on the outside of the leg for comfort. For those who want a shorter style, the classic Bermuda shorts are still popular. And for cycling and jogging, velour or terry shrift-shorts are always cool and comfortable. The popular pants this summer are called "slouch" pants. As the name implies, the pants are loose, baggy and comfortable at the waist. Legs are narrow or tapered to tight cuffs. The sun dress with straps over the shoulders is still in style, but for those who want even more sun, there's the tube dress.- The tube dress features an elastic top which fits snugly under the arms in a strapless style. The 'classic suit -- blazer style jacket and straight skirt — is, still very popular, But there are many variations for the summer. The bolero jacket is popular and many new outfits feature jackets over dresses. The fifties are influencing today's fashions in many ways. Padded shoulders and slim waists are popular, as are the high slit skirts. One section of the show entitled Fashion Intrigue featured the greaser look with lots of black satin. Some of the Oriental mystique is seen in this year's styles. Quilted fabric in oriental styles is used in many loose, jackets. Frog fasteners complete the oriental look. Commentators for the fast- paced program were Jan Tennant of the National News on CBC,television, and .Johanna Andrews of Merry Rags. The show was presented in 13 sections with an intermission in the middle. . . The very colourful opening number was All That Jazz. The models danced on stage to lively music in all the bright, popular colours of the season. Fuscia, bright turquoise, hot purple, and glowing chrome yellow were featured. The audience was stunned in Raining Power when one of the agency's models strolled down the runway wearing a clear plastic raincoat over nothing but a body suit. After ettin everyone's attention, selection of Conventional rain coats were, shown, After the business suits in New York, New York things took a more casual turn in Track Record, Models showed the fashions needed for keeping in shape. The mini-like wrap skirt is still popular on the golf courses. Velour and terry dominate the cool shorts and, tops styles for summer. The bikini is still seen, but the one piece bathing suit is increasing in popularity. An assortment of long wrap skirts and cover-ups were modelled withbathingsuits in a number called New Waves. Intimate apparel was shown in Lights Out. Satin and lace is still tops for negligees, while velours dominate the robes and wrap-around lounge wear. An assortment of styles and casual wear was shown in Sugar 'n' Spice. Dress length rests just below the knee this year, shorter than last year. A special number called Popsicle Toes featured on shoes. With the spotlight focused on the model's feet, shoes were shown in a variety of colours. Heels are high and slim, toes are slender. Formal wear and classic dresses were featured in Signatures -- a showing of designer fashions, and A Night To Remember. others re) a 11,0S May 1 1 th Remember Some One Special with a gift from Something Special • Bath & Kitchen Boutique • Gourmet section filled with gadgets and cookware • Fine porcelain dinnerware by Goebel • Imported glass and crystal • Table linens A UNIQUE LINE OF GIFTS AND ACCESSORIES FOR YOUR HOME JACKET DRESS —.
