Colonials win
over Centennials
Grand Bend Colonials, the
1979 A-division champions,
opened Ausable district
soccer at home Sunday with
a 7-3 result over the Exeter
Centennials, last year's B-
division cup winners.
The Bend collected four of
their goals in the first half.
The teams shared three
apiece in the second.
Martin DeBruyn got two
Exeter goals on penalty
kicks, and Gerald Weersink
sent in Exeter's third score.
For Grand Bend, it was Tony
Mennen with four for the
day, and one each for Bill
Vandenbygaart, Dave
Noland and Kevin Sim-
monds. One of the Colonial
goals was also got off a
penalty.
The game began with the
Bend netting two goals
within the first 10 minutes,
and another pair within the
(mai five of the first half.In
the interim, there were
several missed chances by
the Centennials to lessen the
lead they were under.
There were similar op-
portunities for Exeter during
the last 45 minutes, but the
Colonials generally
managed to keep a definite
edge in a quick and well
played match.
The Exeter Centennials go
into their home opener at
Canner's field next Sunday,
May 11, at 2 p.m., against
visiting Huron Park.
Saveway ready
The Exeter Saveway
fastball club is continuing
practices in preparation for
next week's opening of the
Southwestern Fastball As-
sociation regular season.
Manager John Gillespie
and coach Doug Johnston
have called workouts for
Thursday night at 7 p.m. and
Sunday morning at 11 a.m. at
Exeter Community park.
The Exeter team was in
Lucan last night Tuesday to
meet the Lucan Irish in an
exhibition game.
Gillespie reports that there
are still a couple of openings
on the team, especially at
shortstop and on the mound.
The only two newcomers
so far this year in addition to
nine returnees from the 1979
championship team are
infielder Willie Lamb and
outfielder Gary Skinner.
The Lucan Irish are back
in the league after spending
one year in a London and
district loop and will renew
their rivalry with the
Saveway team.
Comprising the balance of
the league, are, two teams
from Lieury and one' each
from West Corners, Sylvan,
Ailsa Craig, Nairn and
Poplar Hill.
The schedule for the
Exeter team opens Tuesday,
May 13 with an away game
and they will play their first
home game on Thursday,
May 15.

Nairn beats
Huron Park
Despite a fine effort
against Nairn on Sunday
Huron Park went down to
defeat 5,-0 in the Ausable
soccer league opener as
Nairn scored four unan-
swered goals in the second
half,
The play was very, close
and quite intense in the first
half as each team scored
once,
Nairn opened the scored
right off the opening kickoff
with a goal by Cabioeh,
Huron Park replied five
minutes later with a well
executed play by Paul Van
DeWane,
Huron Park closed out the
half with several close at-
tempts, but came up empty.
In the second half Gilbert
of Nairn scored three times
and DeBernardo sent the
final score home.
