Recently some schools in Toronto were closed when the concentration was found to be at unacceptable levels. The ground breaking for the new Dashwood Zion Lutheran Church will take place Sunday morning and construction is expected to start the following week. "We could maybe turn the lights out for a trial period and the spring and summer would be a good time to test the proposal," she said. Lighting around school buildings is used all year round, even during the, summer months when the building are not in use. Board member M. Mulvey suggested that school. principals could bring the board up to date onvandalism to school property. "Vandalism runs in cycles or certain areas," he' said. "In the rural areas, perhaps vandals are more tempted by more lights." Some board members expressed concern that the OPP don't check rural schools often enough for the lights-off theory to be tested properly, However, trustee Bert Morin said the trial period should be lengthy so the board would have a substantial period time to draw conclusions from. "We can't make the trial period too short because most vandalism will be in the discussing Hawaii 5-0. Apparently it is going off the air. At present it is the longest running show on television. (Speaking of long running shows, did you realize that MASH has lasted longer than the Korean War?) Anyway, these two deejays were guessing how the powers-that-be would do away with Steve McGarrett. They suggested that the top- cop will fall out of a helicopter into an exploding volcano. I'm afraid that I haven't been watching enough television lately to 'see how accurate their predictions are. It may sound far-fetched, but then we never thought the fugitive would ever catch the one-armed man, did we? Or was it a one-armed man? All I remember now is that we sure stayed close to the T.V. set that night for David Janssen's last show. Another great television series episode which stands out in my mind was the day that Katie and Robbie had triplets. Like J.R.'s shooting and the fugitive's last chase, the episode received plenty of advance promotion. You don't remember Katie and Robbie? Robbie was one of. Fred McMurray's Three Sons. All season we had been waiting for the baby, when suddenly T.V. Guide hinted that it would be triplets. Which reminds me, has the girl from Eight is Enough who married Merle the Pearl had her baby yet? The Huron County Board of Education will investigate the theory of discontinuing the use of floodlights around schools at night in an effort to curb vandalism on school property. John Henderson, chair- man of the management committee, presented a report to the board Tuesday that recommended the use of outside floodlights at schools be discontinued to deter vandalism and other illegal activities. Henderson told the board that the Ontario Provincial Police suggested that if schools are left in total darkness, any lights seen around the building will alert neighbours and police. "The OPP have suggested that there is not as much damage if there are no lights around a school," he said."And we could also conserve energy at the same time." Board. member Shirley Hazlitt said that the OPP may have suggested such a move there was no Study to support the theory and asked the board to try it aawmg, ammo, Mary's musings BY MARY ALDERSON I have found a way to survive the play-offs . Of course, I am referring to the next six or so weeks of National Hockey League play-offs which I am going to be forced to watch on television. I joined a hockey pool. If you're going to be watching hockey, you might as well make the game a little more interesting. Join a hockey pool, and invest some money in the game. It makes it a lot easier to watch if you're rooting for one of the teams. Since I was a non- committed hockey fan, I rather like the pool I'm in. In this particular pool we pull a number from a hat, and the total score of the game has to add up to that number. It doesn't matter who wins or loses. The theory that pools make television more in- teresting could be carried one step further. For example, I would like to organize a "Who shot J.R.?" pool. I suppose people would argue that Dallas is in- teresting enough and doesn't need pools to get viewers. But ,when they leave you hanging all through the spring and summer to find out "whodunnit", you cer- tainly need something to pass the time. We weren't big Dallas fans, but we got caught up in all the publicity over J.R.'s shooting. In that so-famous last episode. I think we counted no less than seven people with a good motive for shooting J.R. I have predicted that his mistress did it. For those of you not familiar with this night-time soap opera, I believe his mistress is also his wife's sister, just to make the plot a little more ex- citing. Others have argued with me that the footsteps heard just before the shooting were masculine. But that's debatable. I have also heard it predicted that the assassin Will be someone who hasn't yet been introduced to the viewers. Or maybe it was a paid killer, hired by the whole cast of Dallas. It was even suggested that he was shot by his own dear mother. Does J.R, die? No, of course not - he's the man everybody loves to hate. Recently I heard two disc jockeys on the radio good weather," he com- mented. "We should delay the trial period to February to see the difference between summer and winter." Trustee' Herb Turkehim said that while some were concerned over policing of the rural areas the board should also have some input from the municipal police forces in the County., "We should hear from the municipal forces because they may feel differently about it," he said. "most of the damage is occurring in the larger schools anyway." The board agreed to wait another month before adopting any recom- mendations or initiating a trial program. They will solicit reports from school principals and municipal police officials about the program as well. Soine school boards have abandoned the use of outside lights and found the practice to be an effective deterrent against vandalism. The OPP also support the practice claiming that if aschoolis left in total darkness, any lights in the area will give neigh- Pinery liquor charges up Liquor charges were up -.again this- week: 24„ charges were laidOntario, Provincial Police at Pinery Park. Developer purchases core home One of the few remaining private homes in Exeter's business core has been purchased by a local developer. Len Veri told the T-A he has some plans for the property which he purchased from Miss May Jones recently. Veri said he's had little time to work on the project but that a use for the property situated at the corner of Sanders Street West and Main should be determined within the next 12 months. Miss Jones a former primary Sunday School superintendent for the Exeter United Church and long time employee of the A and H Supermarket is currently residing in theBlue Water Rest Home near Zurich. A good driver is not just one who obeys traffic rules, but one who is quick enough to dodge those who don't. Huron Comity Seheds have been checked, or are in the proceSS of being checked, for dangerous: asbestos levels, Director of Education, D.J. Cochrane said Tuesday that the board is carrying out a directive from the Ministry of Education to check all schools in its jursidictioe, The Ministry issued the edict last month, requiring all .boards to conduct a study of school buildings. "Our plant superin- tendent, Bob McVean and his maintenance staff have checked or are in the process of checking, all' schools in the county," Cochrane said, "We have also been in touch with the architects of these buildings to determine if asbestos was used and where." Cochrane admitted there have been some staff con- cerns over the problem but the inspections have not turned up anything so far.
