ROYAL BAN K serving Agriculture Exeter Aori-twarsch Exeter, Ontario • I 4 "They need tender, loving care. You can't just throw the feed in and walk away." ' Those were the comments about his large flock of sheep by Stephen township farmer Gerald Dearing. Gerald and his late father Preston were well known throughout Ontario as per- mier sheep exhibitors at the Royal Winter'F'air and Cana- dian National Exhibition. About five years ago, Dearing abandoned the show trail and went into' the speciality lamb market. He stills show market lambs at Western Fair. About 50 lambs left the Dearing farm Monday mor- ning for the special sheep sales in Toronto and will be aimed at the ethnic Easter market. They are from 10 to 12 weeks of age and weigh from 50 to 60 pounds. Dearing said the lainb market is excellent especial- ly during the two specialty seasons. He received $2.32 per pound live weight for some lambs for 'the 1979 Christmas market. He add- ed, "The new crop price right now is about $1.60 per pound. While strictly in the Dorset breed during his ex- hibiting days, Dearing is do- ing some experimenting with cross breeding with Suffolk. He said, "We seem to be getting better growability with the crossbreeds. I am also seriously thinking about shearing our, sheep twice a ye.ar ,inplead, of the traditidparenge: It appears that ewes are better for lam- bing if they are sheared oftener." With once a year shearing, about nine pounds of 'wool is reaped from an average sheep. Dearing added, "A large ram may produce as much as 12 pounds." Wool now brings about 60 cents per pound. Dearing sells his wool to the Old Mill in Blyth. Asked about the price years ago, Dearing said, "It jumped to $1.25 a pound in 1955 when the Russians went into the world market and bought all the wool produced in New Zealand and Australia. The Stephen sheep farmer said pr,ices for custom shearing have risen from 30 cents an animal a few years ago to the present going rate of up to $1.50. Dearing now has 100 breeding ewes on his Lot 23, Concession 2 farm. "I may move up in numbers in the near future. It will be gradually as I try to keep the operation on a manageable basis," he continued. He also owns another 100 acres at Lot 21, Concession 3. The barn on this property is used for finishing 200 hogs. A highlight of this year on the Dearing farm occurred Tuesday morning, March 11 when quadruplet lambs were born. All are very healthy and are being fed by bottle four times a day to supple- ment their natural supply of milk from the mother ewe. This is the first time in the more than 30 years in the sheep business that Dearing has had quadruplets. He commented, "We had four born about six years ago, but, none of them lived. We also have had two sets of triplets this year," The Dearings are in- volved in many community activities. Gerald is in his second term as president of the Crediton men's club, was Exeter Fair Board president for two years in the 1960's and spent five years as a Stephen township councillor. His wife Jane is currently in her third year as presi- dent of the Crediton Women's Institute. They have four children. Anne is a first year mathematics student at the University of Waterloo; Preston is an electrician's apprentice in addition to helping on the farm; Peter is a grade nine student at South Huron District High School and Dianne is in grade six at Stephen Central School. 519-235-2120 345-2284 \ I FREE COMMG EVENTS FOR FARM TOPICS-MAIL TO T-A, BOX 850, EXETER CrLoi 1TE PH AGRIBUILDER J.R.
