"Ontario pork producers
need help and we need it
soon."
That was the comment of
John Paul Rau after rending
a brief to Saturday's meeting
of the Huron Federation of
Agriculture and area
members of parliament in
Clinton.
According to the brief
from Huron hog producers,
lower Interest rates are the
first priority for hog
producers to survive.
Rau said. "If the present
low prices continue,
producers will leave the
industry and then prices will
be horrifying,"
He said a more equitable
tax base is far overdue and
farm taxes should be based
On services provided.
Rau added, "The present
price of 55 cents for hogs
would be okay if our ex-
penses hadn't risen so much.
Interest rates have close to
doubled in a few years and
the same goes for con-
struction with a bag of
cement going from $1 to $4."
While Rau said there was
no surplus of pork in Ontario,
it was reported the average
weekly kill is about 83,000.
Newly elected Huron-
Bruce MP Murray Cardiff
and a pork producer agreed
the situation was getting
serious.
Ontario F of A vice-
president Frank Wall said
the Pork Producers
Marketing Board does not
have supply management
and it is. harder to stay in
business without it.
On the subject of
stabilization payments, the
meeting was told the last
time this system was used
was in 1972 when production
costs were proven to be
higher than revenue for hogs
Sold.
John Paul Rau concluded,
"It's the cost of production
that hurts and is tough on
young farmers who have

clothes drying units had been
extinguished.
The shorting of the wire is
