Buckeyes defeat the Sherwoods HONDA'S HERE Thanks to six consecutive gpals the Zurich Buckeyes were able to score a 7-5 victory over the Hensall Sherwocds in. South Huron intermediate hockey league, Friday night in Zurich. It was the final regularly scheduled game for both clubs. Playoff schedules will be announced later this week when several' post poned games are completed. The Sherwoods opened the scoring at 2.03 of the first period when Murray Con- nelly converted a pass from Gary Kyle. The Mohawks stayed in contention for most of the first two periods but, four unanswered goals by the Merchants in the final 20 minutes of play were just too much. The ',first period Exeter goal came from the stick of Brian Taylor on a three-way effort:with Barry Baynham and Larry Mason while Rob Standen and captain Ron Corriveau 'counted for Goderich. In the middle session, Brad Taylor converted a past from Brian Taylor to complete the Exeter scoring for the night. The remaining goals for Goderich were scored by Phil Petrie,,Ron Standen, Bruce Bowman, Phil Paquette, Paul Corriveau, Barry .Bloch and Dave Gray. The Hawks took eight of the 13 minor penalties called by referees Ron Watt and Wayne Corbett. Whether it's on the road or in an argument, when you see red, stop! goal to take a 3-1 lead, Brian Campbell scored on a sold dash on a p'oWer play and Allari Taylor hit on a similar unassisted effort. The Buckeyes scored their fifth and sixth straight goals in the first seven minutes of the third period to jump ahead 7-3 Dave Cyr converted a pasS from Gerald Weido and Rick Schilbe and John Graham provided assists from goal shot by Randy McKinnon. The Sherwoods came back with two goals of their own. Rick Ingram scored on a three-way combination with captain Jim Ferguson and Allan Taylor and Taylor scored on a pass from Ferguson. The Buckeyes drew eight of the even dozen penalties called by referees Don Appleby and Ron Watt. Waxers lose, Atoms, ,too The Exeter Waxers dropped a 3-2 decision to Mitchell in an exhibition novice contest at the rec centre, Sunday. Graham Arthur gave the locals a 1-0 lead in the first when he converted a play with Jason McFalls and Tom Rolph, but the visitors came back with three straight to- take the triumph. Larry Lewis scored Exeter's final tally with five • minutes left on a play with David Josephson but they . couldn't get 'the equalizer. Atoms stopped The local atoms were nipped 8-7 by Thedford in an. exhibition contest at the rec centre, Saturday. Ron Loucks paced the Exeter attack with a hat trick performance, while Jon O'Connor added a pair of unassisted efforts, Single tallies were fired home by Steve Lingard and Vern Iskauskas. Paul Mellecke and Bryan Quinn had two assists each for the locals and Danny McLean helped out on one. This Saturday, the team will play in the Shamrock playoff tournament in London Gardens. They face Oakridge in their initial test at 9:00 a.m. Bantams win in exhibition The Exeter bantams rolled to their third straight exhibition win when they nipped Zurich by a 3-1 count this week. Ted Oke, Steven Batten and Brian Blackburn not- ched the local goals, while Dean Arinstrong replied for Zurich. Dave Hayter had two assists for Exeter and Darren Vandergunst picked up one. This weekend, the locals play in the Shamrock loop "A" playoff. They tackle London Minor in their first outing in Strathroy on Saturday. The tournament then switches to Exeter on Sunday and the locals play at either 10:45 or 12:00 noon.
