This year's midget squad. The Exeter Hawks failed to pull any upsets as they went out four straight to Mitchell in this year's group semi-final, but there was a bit of a surprise as the locals stuck with the loop leaders better than some had an- ticipated. Mitchell wrapped up the set with back-to-back wins on Tuesday and Wednesday. They took the first contest by a 7-4 count and then came to Exeter to post a 6-3 margin. It was their first win over Exeter in the past few years and marked the first time in four seasons that Exeter didn't win the division playoff title. In Tuesday's game in Mitchell, the hosts overcame a 3-1 deficit to post their three-goal margin. Exeter trailed by only a 5-4 margin at the end of two but couldn't dent the strong play of Bob Ward in the final 20 minutes of play. Cam Haist paced the Exeter attack with a pair of markers, while the singles were fired by Preston Smile! Flattery is only soft soap and soap is 50 per cent lye. Money isn't everything - sometimes it isn't even enough. who reached the .OMHA quarter-final •• on the weekend, are no. exception, They skated on to home ice, Friday, clear favorites to wrap up their best-of-five series with Port Dover as Dearing and Dave Kinsman. Dan Bell assisted on a pair and helping out on one each were Larry Dawson, Dave Atthill, Dearing, Ron Bilcke and Doug Fletcher. Steve Sararas worked between the pipes for Exeter and recorded 39 saves. Ousted The Exeter crew made their early exit from the playoffs when they dropped a 6-3 verdict on home ice, Wednesday. Once again, it was the middle period that did them in as the visitors outscored them 3-1 in that.20 minutes. Mitchell took a 1-0 lead in the first and upped it to 4-1 at the end of two. The local Hawks made it tight when they scored a pair in the third to reduce the margin to only one, but the visitors added the clincher at 14:27 and then put in a short- handed tally in the final seconds. Dennis Preszcator, Dave Atthill and Preston Dearing they held a commanding 2-0 lead. However, they blew that one with a 6-5 loss and then had to travel to play on Port Dover ice, Saturday, Despite the trip and the unfamiliar scored for Exeter, with assists going to Kerry Bedard and Doug Fletcher. Steve Wells turned aside 30 shots for Exeter, while Bob The Lucan-Ilderton Jets dropped two games in the Ontario Hockey Association Continental senior league this week, but, in one of them stayed in contention until the final minutes,. Tuesday;"- they were thumped 10-2 by the Cim- bridge Hornets and Friday night in Woodstock they lost 6-3 to the Royals on three goals in the last four minutes of play. The Jets will wind up the season this week with two games on the road. They will be in Petrolia Friday night to take on the ice, they scored.a 4-0 win to wrap up the set. The locals, sponsored by the Exeter Kinsmen, now meet Port Elgin in a best-of- five quarter-final series. That set opened last night in Ward stopped 26 for Mit- chell. The initial frame was a wide-open 15 minutes of hockey as the teams scored seven times, with. Port Dover ending up with a 4-3 margin. They upped the spread to two goals early in the second, only to have the homesters even the count to start the third period. Port Dover scored the winner with a man ad- vantage at the 6:53 mark of the final stanza. Captain Pete Tuckey paced the Exeter attack with two goals, while the singles were fired by John Kernick, Dave Jackson and Jeff Rowe. Dave Shaw assisted on four of the five Exeter goals to 'lead in that department, while Tuckey and Rowe added a pair each. Wayne Smith helped out on one. Exeter picked up nine of the 16 penalties called. Solid effort With Pete Pars'ons turning everything aside that Port Dover could throw at him, Saturday, the little net- minder paced the locals to their 4-0 triumph. Wayne Smith started them off at the mid-way mark of the first period on what turned out to be the winner. Dave Underwood and Mike. Murray drew the assists. Murray then upped the lead to 2-0 in the final seconds of the middle frame as he eonverted a pass from. Smith. Times,-Advocate, February, 27, 1980 Meet Port Elgin next fidgets oust Port Dover, On Exeter ice, :Frio, each quart The South Huron Het Centre will be a busy spot Saturday as members of the Exeter figure skating club present their annual carnival This year's carnival theme will be Mother Goose and will feature a wide variety of story book characters. The carnival will go in two presentations at 2 p,m, and 7:30 p.m. Saturday with all 153 members of the club taking part. The shows this year will feature'five guest skaters who have done very well at recent provincial and Canadian skating championships. Of the most interest locally will be Exeter's own Laurie Prout who will team up with her partner Bill Scriver of London. Laurie and Bill placed sixth in the all-Canada championships held recently in Kitchener in the novice dance pairs division. Mary Jo Fedy and Tim Mills will also be here Saturday and they also placed very high in the Cana- dian finals at Kitchener. They were second in the 1980 Canadian junior pairs division and fourth in the senior pairs classification at the same event. Mary Jo's mother Carolyn was and still is a professional with the Kitchener-Waterloo skating club. Mrs. Fedy at one time taught figure skating in Lucan and with her sister skated at a number of car- nivals in the area and was at the opening of the old Hensall arena. Mary Jo Fedy is a great niece of Mrs. Harry Hoff- man of Dashwood and has a number of cousins skating in the Exeter club. They are the four Birmingham sisters, the Soldan girls and Debbie Taylor. The fifth dust skater is Anissa Gurchin, 1979 pre- novice champion of Canada. Saturday's carnival is the major fund raising event for the figure skating club and we would urge everyone to drop up to the South Huron Rec Centre Saturday afternoon or evening. Marie Tieman is president of the figure skating club and Pat Down is convener of the carnival. Hang in there Despite their most dismal record since they were established some eight years ago, the Lucan-Ilderton Jets are to be congratulated for hanging in and com- pleting the schedule. The Jets current season record is six victories and 32 defeats. They close out the season Sunday afternoon in Durham. In many games,, the Jets have played well in the first 30 or 40 minutes, but, have appeared to run out of s team. In their first 36 games, the Jets scored only 125 goals but, two of their members were in the. top 35 in league scoring. Hugh Mitchell was 24th with 20 goals and 18 assists and Ed Parkinson was two points farther back with 16 goals and 20 assists. Jamie Robb of the Jets has proven to be a real iron man. He is the fifth player in league history to com- pete in 300 games. Ray Tilley of Woodstock has played 176 straight games and Ken Kitching of the same Woodstock team is the second goalie to play 10,000 minutes. NHL Scoring After a torrid first half, the top scorers in the National Hockey league have slacked off their pace a little bit and may not set any records. The only two players with any chances of reaching record marks are Marcel Dionne of the Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers fantastic rookie Wayne Gretzky. Dionne with 19 regular season games remaining had 114 points, 38 behind the record of 152 set by Phil Esposito when he was with the Boston Bruins in 1970- 71. Wayne Gretzky and Dionne both have a shot at the assist record of 102 held by Bobby Orr. Gretzky picked up seven assists in one game a few weeks ago and had a total of 64 with 20 games left. He and Dionne would both need two points per game to reach record marks. Gretzky with a total of 99 points good for third place in the league standings at the tender age of 19 °should break more records in years to come. Remember he has accomplished this with a team that is 15th in the overall team standings. Bunny Bundle hockey An interesting hockey game will go at the Zurich arena this Sunday night with all proceeds going to Bun- ny Bundle of CFPL radio and eventually to crippled children. The game will pit the Bedard family against the Zurich oldtimers known as the Has-Beans. The Bedards will have a full lineup of players nam- ed Bedard along with a number of in-laws. We could say the outlaws are on the other team, but, let's leave it as a thought. On the Has-Beans are fellows like Don and Doug O'Brien, Bob Johnston, Bob Merner, George Suplat, George Haggitt, to name a few. 41101SM EXETER SWIMMING POOL Requires Swimming pool instructors and guards ft• • our 1980 season. Combing back for the Jets were Rick Banks on a pass from Hugh Mit- chell and Ed Parkinson on a three-way combination with Rick Banks and Randy Kraul. The score remained tied at 3-3 until 15.37 of the third frame when Doug McFarlane completed a hat trick per- formance. The final two Royal goals came from the sticks of Don Langlois and Doug Paton. In the Tuesday loss to Cambridge Jamie Robb and Bruce Reddick were the L-I marksmen. Robb counted in the first period on a three- way effort with Ed Parkinson and Randy Kraul and Ed Parkinson and Steve Proctor provided the passes for Reddick's successful shot.
