Senior cagers win
in Huron-Perth play
BY MATT McCLURE
Thursday, the South Huron
boy's basketball teams
travelled to Listowel to play
the Lords. The juniors lost a
close decision to Listowel, 48-
45, while the South Huron
midgets were soundly
defeated, 80-31. The senior
Panthers were the only
winners as they won, 50-42,
The seniors played an
inspired game against
Listowel knowing that their
playoff aspiration hinged on
this contest. Tne team,
despite being down 26-25 at
the half, reversed rates with
Listowel to lead by one at the
three quarter mark. Then
the Panthers exploded to 14
points in the final period
while holding the Lords to a
meagre eight points, to
ensure the win.
Leading South Huron's
late surge was Doug Hoff-
man who had 14 points, In
addition, Hoffman ac-
cumulated eight steals
during the course of the
game. Dave Woodward shot
well from outside to add 11
points. John Byrne and Matt
McClure had 8 points each.
The juniors were not as
fortunate as their last
quarter surge wasn't enough
to manage a win. With
Listowel ahead 19-6 at one
point, the game threatened
to turn into a rout. However,
the-Panthers settled down to
play their own game and
steadily knock away
Listowel's lead.
Kevin Parsons lead the
juniors with an individual
high of 20 points. Doug
Fisher was next with 13
points while Brian Horner
had 7 steals.
The midgets blew a first
quarter lead, 12-9, allowing
Listowel to score 55 points in
the two ensuing quarters.
In synopsis one might say
that the Panthers were
unable to control the, ac-
curate shooting of the Lords.
Scott Brintnell led South
Huron with 10 points while
John Kernick was close
behind with nine poihts,
Mike Glavin and John Mol
added five and four,
respectively.
In exhibition play Friday,
South Huron basketball
teams hosted Strathroy. The
seniors played a determined
game against Strathroy,
ninth ranked in the London
Free Press top 10, losing 70-
53.
The junior game was a
rather lopsided affair as the
Panthers were dropped 85-36
by the opposition. The
midgets also lost,
The seniors started off
quickly and were in front 12-6
at one point. However,
Strathroy came roaring back
to lead 35-24 at the half.
The Panthers couldn't
control Strathroy during the
third quarter as they ex-
ploded for 23 points, com-
pared to the Panthers 15.
The Panthers held the
point, spread to 17 points
during the fourth quarter.
Leading South Huron were
Matt McClure with 14 points
and John Byrne with 10
points. Dave Bell and Dave
Woodward were next with
eight and five points,
respectively,
Doug Hoffman and Steve
Pearce each had four points
in the strong team effort.
The juniors had trouble
manoeuvering against the
Strathroy press and as a
result turnover plagued the
team. However, the team
had a good effort against
Strathroy with Doug Fischer
and Kevin Parson being the
top scorers with ten and
eight points respectively.
John McAllister and Paul
Mansfield also played well
scoring 5 points each. Paul
Koer added three.
The midgets lost 56-25 to
Strathroy. Top scorers for
South Huron were Scott
Brintnell and Mike Glavin
with eight and seven points,
respectively.

completed their home
schedule for the season in the
Ontario Hockey Association
Continental senior league
Sunday as they •lost 8-2 to the
Petrolia Squires.
It was the Jets 30th defeat
of the season. Number 29
came Friday night in
Preston as the L-I club with
only seven players in
uniform lost to the Jesters 5-1.
The Jets have four games
remaining on , the road to
wind up' the schedule. They
were in Cambridge last
night, Tuesday; they go to
Woodstock Friday; to
Petrolia a week from Friday
entire game.
Playing in addition to
goalie Cam Fink were Jamie
Robb, Randy Kraul, Bruce
Reddick, Chris Harrison,
Steve Proctor and Randy
Hill.
The short handed Jets put
up a tremendous fight in the
first 20 minutes as the period
ended in a scoreless tie.

as they scored four times
and added their fifth goal in
the closing session.
The only Jets goal was
scored in the third period by
Bruce Reddick.
Tim Holder scored three
times for Preston and singles
were added by Len Crichton
and Ken Stewart.
Referee Bill Devorski had
no trouble in keeping the
game under control as he
called only two minor
penalties. The Preston
penalty was for too many
men on the ice. The Jets
certainly never had that
same problem.
A normal staff of players

The Waxers came up with
another topnotch effort,
Sunday, to gain a 3-3 tie with
Strathroy in an exciting tilt
at the rec centre.
The locals led twice; but
had to come from behind to
get the single point.
Doug Clark started them
off with an unassisted effort
in the first minute of the
middle frame, and-after the
visitors evened the count,
Graham Arthur converted a
pass from Robbie McLelland
to give Exeter a 2-1 margin.
Strathroy bounced back
with two markers and then
Jeff Chipchase picked up the
equalizer when he dashed
the length of the rink and
drilled a hard shot into the
corner. The netminder
managed to get a glove on
the shot, but it was too hard
for him to hang onto and it
dropped in for the 3-3 tie.
Goaltenders Harlen
Tinney and Scott Wedlake
came up with several key
saves to keep the Waxers in
contention. They've lost only
once in their last five games,
that by a one-goal margin in
the last minute to Belmont.
