It took them over three
months and three-quartersof
the schedule, but the Exeter
Waxers finally posted a win
in Shamrock league play this
week.
They travelled to
Strathroy on Saturday and
scored a 4-2 win.
To prove it was no fluke,
the locals continued their
vastly improved play at
home on Sunday and lost a 2,
1 heart-breaker to Belmont
when the visitors scored with
only 49 seconds left in the
game. '
Exeter juthped to the
attack early in posting their
initial loop win in Strathroy.
They scored three times in
the first period and were
never headed.
David Josephson notched
the first tally as he slid a.
pass from Tom Rolph into
the cage and Robbie
McLelland then flipped a
high shot into the open
corner on a play with Laurie
Chalmers and David
Dalrymple.
Doug Clark picked up his
first of two when he con-
verted passes, from Jason
McFalls and Jeff Rowe to
make the score 3-0.
Strathroy got one of those
back in the final seconds of
the first period, but Clark
made it 4-1 for Exeter in the
second on a, play with Jeff
Rowe.
Strathroy dented the twine
early in the third to stay
close, but netminders Harlen
Tinney and Scott Wedlake
shut the door on them for the
balance of the, contest.
Playing at home, Sunday,
the Waxers stuck with the
strong Belmont squad
throughout the game and
actually had an advantage in
the play, but hit a couple of
goal posts and missed on
some other good chances.
Belmont opened the
scoring in the second period
and Doug Clark notched the
equalizer early in the third
on a play with Jason McFalls
and Jeff Rowe.
The teams stayed on even
terms until the final minute
when Belmont broke loose
for the winner and Exeter
failed in a strong bid to get cr;

Following a meeting of
the South Huron Hockey
League executive. Saturday
the Thedford Browns have
been suspended for the
remainder of the season.
The move followed the dis-
covery that 10 players on the
Browns' roster were from
outside of the team's six
mile drawing radius as
defined in the league's con-
stitution. •
League president John
Stephens said that the move
was not intended to punish
the drowns but that the
league's constitution must
be upheld.
He said the Thedford team
Marauders
• • win again
In a battle of the two
division leaders in the South
Huron intermediate hockey
league Thursday night, the
Centralia Marauders edged
the Goderich Merchants 4-2.
In South Huron action
tomorrow night, Thursday,
the Marauders will play host
to the Grand Bend Mariners,
Thedford will be in Exeter to
meet the Mohawks and
Kettle Point will be in
Henshll.
Friday Kettle Point will be
at Grand Bend and Sunday
it's Goderich at Zurich,
Parkhill at Kettle Point and
Grand Bend at Thedford.
In Thursday's battle of the
league leaders, all scoring
was confined to the last half
of the contest. Goderich
opened the scoring at 9:18 of
the second period on a
successful shot by Paul
Shaefer..
The Marauders tied the
score less than a minute
later when Dennis Carty
completed a three-way
combination with Cec
Nickles and Blair Hearn.
Randy Somerville put the
Centralia club into the lead
to stay with two minutes left
in the middle frame when he
converted a pass from Perry
Knee.
Each team scored a power
play goal late in the third
period. Dennis Carty not-
ched his second goal of the
night for the Marauders on a
pass from Cec Nickles and
Terry Schaefer replied, for
Goderich.
The Merchants pulled
their goalie with less than a
minute to go in an attempt to
score the tying goal but the
move backfired.
Perry Knee came up with
the puck and found captain
Rori Funston in the clear and
he fired the puck into the
empty net to solidify the
Marauders victory.
The Marauders took 10 of
the 16 penalties assessed by
referees Don Appleby and
Ron Shirran.

playoff bids this weekend,
but neither team rose to the
occasion.
Exeter lost 8-0 to Mitchell
which forfeited a $100 per-
formance bond will be allow-
ed to reapply to the league
for the 1980-81 season.
All statistics involving the
Browns will be removed
from the league's record
books. The Thedford squad
has been a member in good
standing for the past five or
six years in the local loop,
Stephens stated.
Stephens noted that the
league has provisions in its
charter to aid the weaker
teams in the league. The
Browns were in second last
place in the league's
southern division.
The Thedford situation has
had repercussions
throughout the entire league
with each team having until
Wednesday to declare any il-
legal players. As of Monday
one team which Stephens did
not name turned in the cards
of three illegal players. The
players are suspended for
the remainder of the season
with a fine of $25 per illegal
player being levied.
If it was discovered that
there were illegal players on
the teams after WedneSday
Stephens said the league
would contemplate further
action.
The other factor on which
a player could be ruled in-
eligible to play would be if
he has signed to play con-
currently with another team
playing in a league judged to
be equal or better in calibre.

In the case of Exeter
Mohawks defenceman Barry
Baynham Stephens stated
the Exeter team had gained
a release from the Lucan-
Ilderton Jets of the Con-
tinental senior league. Two
other Exeter players Jeff
Fuller and Brad Taylor had
obtained their releases from
the, Junior D Exeter
Moawks.
The only exception to this
rule is the Centralia College
of Agricultural Technology
Saints who are allowed to
have players playing in
another league. To receive
this concession the Saints
waived their right to the two
imports which the other
teams are permitted.
In another move affecting
the Mohawks. the league
will allow suspended
defenceman Jack Chipchase
to act as assistant coach.
Chipchase had been
suspended by the league
following an incident in
game between the Mohawks
and Zurich Buckeyes late in
December.
The initial league ruling
did not permit the former
Toronto Marboro to play any
role with the Mohawks on or
of itthe ice.
Stephens termed
Chipchase's actions "out of
character" and that he could
see little opposition if
Chipchase applied for
reinstatement as a player

Braves.
The loss by the Hawks and
the win by the Braves
narrowed the gap to a single
point between the two teams
as they struggle for a playoff
spot. Exeter holds the slim
lead for third place.
The Seaforth Centenaires
remain six points back of
Exeter, but now have three
games in hand as they were
idle over the past week.
The loss by the Irish and
the win by Mitchell almost
assured the latter of top spot
in the northern division.
They now lead by four
points, having posted a 3-3 tie
over Bothwell on Saturday
night.
Exeter will have only two
chances left to improve their
playoff hopes. They travel to
Lucan tonight for a game
against the Irish and then
host the southern division's
second place Thamesford
Trojans at the rec centre,
Friday, in the final game of
their schedule.
The Hawks were no match
for their namesakes from
Mitchell, Friday, as the
visitors scored a pair late in
the first period and were
never threatened after that.
They added two power play
goals in the middle frame
and ran away with the
contest with fotir,markers in
the final sthnza.
They fired 37 shots at Steve
Wells, while the Hawks were
taking 25 at Bob Ward, who
turned them all aside.
The Mitchell crew picked
up 12 of the 21 penalties,
which included fighting
majors to Ron Bilcke and
Kerry Bedard of the Exeter
team and Ron Elliott and
Daryl Stacey of the visitors.
Brad Fischer paced the
scoring attack with three
goals, while Phil Avery
added a pair.
South Huron loop cracks
down on illegalities
P000 2A T moos-Advocate, Februaty 6, 1980
While it appears that winter has just started, there
is no dolibt that spring is just around the corner.
One sign of spring is the increase in press releases
emanating from the Toronto Blue Jays.
The Blue Jays have announced their promotional
schedule along with broadcast schedules for the first.
seven exhibition games.
In regard to broadcast of Blue Jays games this
summer we called Bill Brady who is Station manager
at CFPL radio in London.
Bill told us he expected some Blue Jay games
would be carried on his station this summer, but, at
the moment didn't know exactly how many.
He said CFPL would be meeting with the Hewpex
Sports network officials this week to work out a
schedule satisfactory to both groups.
Probably being an eternal optimist as far as the
Blue Jays are concened we hope as many games as
possible are carried locally. We feel the Toronto club
will improve immensely in the next couple of years.
Returning for their fourth season covering Blue
Jays action on the airwaves will beTomCheek and Ear-
ly Wynn. CHKH in Toronto the station founded by
Foster Hewitt will be the flagship station for the Blue
Jays and will carry seven exhibition and all regularly
scheduled games.
Tom Cheek has proven to be an acceptable play-
by-play announcer and despite his shattering of the
English language, Early Wynn has an immense
knowlege of the game.
New Toronto Manager Bobby Mattick is op-
timistic about his team's chances this year. Mattick is
sincere in his optimism and knows the time has come
for the team to produce.
Mattick said recently, "Our fans have been great
to us over the past three years but they expect us to be
winning more games and they have every right to this
opinion. We are not an expansion team any longer and
we have to stop thinking of ourselves as one."
Following are some more of Mattick's comments
as he assesses the Blue Jays lineup for the 1980 season.
"The nucleus of players who will lead us to a pen-
nant was enlarged upon to include Alfredo Griffin,
Dave Stieb and Dan Ainge.
One thing I definitely want to do this season is in-
ject more power into the lineup and I expect the ma-
jority of it to come from our outfielders. Otto Velez,
who hit 15 homers and 48 RBI's as a part-time player
in '79, will be given every opportunity to become a
regular. Another guy who should be able to provide us
with a little sock is Barry Bonnell who we acquired
from Atlanta along with infielder Pat Rockett and
pitcher Joey McLaughlin.
Along with his bat Barry should help this club with
his speed and throwing arm which could make him a
natural for right field. Rick Bosetti did a fine job in
centre field in '79 and I am optimistic that he will
further be able to improve his run production 'this
season. Al Woods continued his improved play last
year and J.J. Cannon exhibited outstanding speed.
As for Bob Bailor I feel that with a little work on
his batting stoke he will be able to return to his form of
old. A guy like Bailor is important to have around
because he can help you at so many positions.
I am really excited about the way our young infield
is shaping up. At first we have the 'veteran' John
Mayberry (29) who once again hit 20 home runs and his
steady glove was a settling influence on the whole in-
field. Our second baseman at this point appears to be23
year-old Damaso Garcia who is an 'Alfredo Griffin'
type player with great range plus speed. Garcia, of
course, came to us along with Paul Mirabella from the
Yankees.
At shortstop what else can I say about 22 year-old
Alfredo Griffin that hasn't already been said -
American League Rookie of the Year, Blue Jays MVP
- and the best things are yet to come. He went down to
the Instructional League following the season to work
on his bunting this season.
Moving over to third base we have Roy Howell
(26) who contributed 15 homers to the cause last
season. I want Roy to improve on his defence this
season and I am confident with his desire and ability
that he will be able to. As for Danny Ainge (20), who
impressed so many people last season in only his se-
cond year of pro ball, all I can say is that he is going to
pla
Behind the plate there is no question that we will
miss Rick Cerone but I truly feel that Ernie Whitt will
be a pleasant surprise to a lot of people. His defence
has improved over the past couple of seasons and he
should be able to hold his own with the bat. If things
don't work out we can always call on Bob Davis or
possibly even young Brian Milner.
I am expecting a return to his 1978 form for Rico
Carty. I'm a Carty man and I feel he can provide us
with the RBI production we're looking for from our
DH. Should Rico not rebound then we'll consider Valez
or Howell to fill the spot.
As for pitchers with so many young arms it is im-
perative that we go with a 5 man rotation again this
year. I am hopeful that Dave Lemanczyk and Jim
Clancy will be able to bounce back from the injuries
that plagued them in '79 and take their spots in the
rotation.
I'd have to say that my other starters would come,
from Dave Stieb, who made the jump from Class A to
the big leagues last season, lefty Paul Mirabella,
Butch Edge and Phil Huffman. There is no reason we
can't improve our team ERA significantly in '80.
The place we have the most room for improve-
ment is in the bullpen. To that end we acquired Joey
McLaughlin from Atlanta who along withlast year's
top reliever Tom Buskey should be able to provide us
with an increased number of saves. As well, Balor
Moore and Jesse Jefferson should be able to contribute
as spot starters or as relievers. A couple of guys who
performed well at Syracuse last season, Steve Luebber
and Steve Grilli, will also be vying for jobs and there is
nothing wrong with a little healthy competition.
It's going to be an interesting year and I'm glad to
be part of it."
Well said, Mister manager.
