By ROSS HAUGH
It's all over and we can use a number of
superlatives to describe the 1980 Exeter Lions club
Sportsmen's dinner.
Each year we say the dinner was bigger and better
than the year before and how can the Lions better this-
achievement the next time. But, that is the truth.
Tuesday's dinner was great as it combined all of
the ingredients necessary to satisfy the sporting and
moral requirements of persons of all ages.
The speakers put together just Ate right combina-
tion of humour and practical and religious philosophy
to satisfy everyone.
The Lions and dinner chairman George Godbolt in
particular are to be commended for an outstanding ef-
fort. After a few problems with the PA system Godbolt
did an excellent job of moving the program along at a
good pace and introducing guests until master of
ceremonies Craig Baynham took over,
To this writer one of the big highlights was the
appearance of Christine Easterbook* as, Tammy and
the representative of all crippled children.
Christine who is 11 years old and a grade five stu-
dent at Hensall Public School was the star of the show
and the cool and friendly manner in which she took
care of her speaking duties, endeared her to all of the
more than 500 in attendance.
Christine and the other crippled kids is ',what the
dinner is all about. All proceeds from the dinner and
the figure is expected to be well in excess of $5,000 go
to the 'London Crippled Children's Treatment Centre.
Sonia Jackson who is the district nurse for the
Crippled Children's Treatment Centre in London told
us there are eight children in the immediate Exeter
area presently receiving help from the Centre.
To see one of the handicapped youngsters from our
own area who is benefitting from events like the
Sportsmen's dinner is a real joy and Christine was
great in filling her role. It would be safe to say that
everyone at the dinner felt like doing what George God-
bolt did immediately after her speech and that was
giving her a big hug.
Firstly we will tell a few things about Red Storey.
He is best known for his antics on the ice as a referee
for many years in the National Hockey League until he
ran into a few problems with the then president
Clarence Campbell.
Storey's hockey activities continue as he does the
colour commentary on most of the Maple Leaf games
on CKO radio and is well known as Santa Claus on the
Hockey Night in Canada telecasts each Christmas.
The younger generation will not know that Storey
was one of the stars of Canadian senior football back in
the days of the Toronto Argos and Balmy Beach.
We learned from Red Tuesday night that he and
his son Bob are the only father and son to ever play on
Grey Cup championship teams.
Red was on the Argos when they won the Canadian
championships on two occasions in the late 30's and
early 40's. Son Bob was with the Hamilton Tiger cats
in 1967 and the Montreal Alouettes in 1970 when those
two clubs won the Grey Cup.
One fellow who knows personally of Red Storey's
prowess on the football field was also at the
Sportsmen's dinner. He is Ron Mock of Hensall who
played for an Owen Sound high school team against
Barrie in a playoff game in 1935.
Red Storey played for Barrie at that time and
Mock said there was no way you could stop him when
he got the ball.
During the evening Storey had lots of good things
to say about Rocky Saganiuk of the Toronto Maple
Leafs who was a last minute addition to the list of
sportsmen and women in attendance.
Storey called Saganiuka human buzz-saw. He add-
ed, "No one works harder in the corners than Rock."
Saganiuk had little to say about the trade situation
in Toronto. His only comment was "If there is going to
be a trade it will have to come quick to help us. We
only have 30 games left in the schedule."
Gary Carter, a very dedicated and sincere
member of the Montreal Expos said his club would be
right back in the National league pennant race and
with any luck would come out a winner this time.
Carter felt the recent trade with the Detroit Tigers
to obtain fleet centre fielder Ron LeFlore would be
very beneficial to the Toronto club.
He continued, "LeFlore's speed will certainly
come in handy on the bases and his near .300 batting
average will help."
Carter said the trade of pitcher Bill Atkinson to
the Chicago White Sox would be good for Atkinson say-
ing, "This should give Atky a chance to pitch regular-
ly. In Montreal we have about 10 pitchers rating ahead
of him." Atkinson is a native of Chatham, Ontario.
A change in managers for the Toronto Blue Jays
appears to be good news for one of the Toronto
players, Rick Bosetti told us he would have a lot more
freedom from manager Bobby Mattick to try and steal
bases.
The Blue Jays will try more steals this year under
Mattick. Bosetti along with Danny Ainge and Elfredo
Griffin can match speed with most in the American
league.
David Honderich of the Blue Jays publicity depart-
ment said Danny Ainge would Miss spring training and
a few games of the schedule because of his university
basketball commitments,
Ainge is rated as one of the top 10 in US college
ranks. He plays with Brigham Young University and
will have to decide between baseball and basketball as
a professional career at the end of the 1981 season.
The Blue Jays have come up with some insurance
in case Ainge stays on the basketball court. They have
obtained another second baseman in Dave Garcia and
it was suggested by one of the Blue Jays reps that even
this year Ainge may be moved around to find another
position for him.
Getting back to the Sportsmen's dinner, Reggie
Rucker of the Cleveland Browns did not appear. He
became ill after the London dinner the night before
and was forced to cancel out in Exeter.
Junior playoffs start
with battle of Hawks
One of the most exciting
hockey rivalries will be
renewed early in the nor-
thern Junior "D" grouping
when the Exeter and Mit-
chell Hawks meet in the
semi-finals.
Exeter has won that battle
for four straight years, but
they'll be decided underdogs
when the teams open the
best-of-seven series.
However, that may not
mean as much as some
would think. Last year, the
Exeter version of the Hawks
were also the underdogs and
they came up with a stunning
triumph to go on to the
Ontario semi-finals.
The series opened last
night in Mitchell and the
second game will be at the
South Huron rec centre,
Friday. The teams go. back
to Mitchell next Tuesday and
the fourth game is slated for
Exeter the following night.
Coach Ron Bogart only has
six members of last year's
squad back to attempt
another upset over Mitchell,
in this, a rebuilding year for
Exeter. The locals have
taken only one point from
their namesakes this season,
but as Mitchell coach Bob
Zimmer knows, anything
can happen in the playoffs.
His team lost only six times
this season, while Exeter
dropped 19 games in their
third place finished.

third game will be Sunday
evening at Lucan.
Do it themselves
The Exeter Hawks didn't
wait for one of the other
league teams to give them
some help to make a playoff
spot. They managed the feat
themselves when they
clipped Thamesford 6-4 at
the rec centre, Friday.
They almost made it
Wednesday night, but a final
period rally fell short as they
dropped a 6-5 loss to the Irish
in Lucan.
Dan Bell paced the Hawks
to their final victory of the
regular season against
Thamesford as he managed
a hat-trick performance.
His two goals gave Exeter
a 2-1 lead at the end of the
first and his third goal late in
the third was the clincher.
Dave Kinsman, Kerry
Bedard and Terry Caldwell
fired the other markers.
Caldwell's power play goal
early in the third was the
winner, while Bedard scored
his while the Hawks were
playing short-handed late in
the second. Kinsman's goal
was also a solo effort.
Doug Fletcher and Dave
Atthill drew assists on Bell's
first two goals, while helping
out on other tallies were
Dennis Preszcator, Dwight
Consitt and Preston Dearing.
Steve Wells turned aside 26
shots tb record the win, while
Thamesford's Dan Nairn
stopped 28 shots.

Nipped by Irish
Wednesday night, the
Hawks were trailing 6-3
midway through the third
period against the Irish and
they then potted a pair in
less than two minutes to
come close to upsetting the
Lucan crew.
Once' again, Paul Medd
proved to be a thorn in the
side of the Hawks as he
potted a pair of goals to help
pace the attack. Medd has
had several big games
against the Hawks
throughout the season.
Jeff Marshall also added a
pair for the Irish, while
singles were fired by Rick
Freeman and Tom
McGorman.
Cam Haist was a two-goal
man for the Hawks and
firing singles were Ken
Varley, Preston Dearing
and Kerry Bedard.
The teams were even at
one goal each at the end of
the first and the Irish moved
ahead 4-3 after two stanzas.
They popped two goals in
just over a minute before the
midway mark of the third
and the Hawks got two in less
than two minutes just after
the midway mark.
Steve Sararas stopped 38
shots for Exeter, while
Murray Jamieson and Dan
Sceli turned aside 31 for the
Irish.
Exeter took six of the 13
penalties .called and they
scored on two power play
attempts while the Irish
were successful on one. The
penalties included fighting
majors to Larry Dawson and
Ron Bilcke of the Hawks and-
