Thursday to tear down the
building.
The school was con-
structed about 110 years ago
and was closed in June 1974
when the pupils were t
transferred to the East
Williams Public School at
Nairn. In 1977 the village
purchased the school
property from Middlesex
Board of Education for
$60,000.
For the past several years
the school has been used by
various community groups
including the cubs, scouts
and mothers' Take-A-Break .

building had proven too
costly to maintain. Heating
expenses ,alone have
amounted to approximately
$5,000 a wintey.
No plan has been made for
the use of the site according
to Whitmore,
Classes were first held in
the school in January 1674. In
1931 the school was entirely
remodelled and additions
included a west wing, an
automatic steam heating
furnace and water system.
In 1947 the continuation
school merged with the
North Middlesex High. School
area but continued to func-
tion as classes for work as
far as Junior Matriculations
until 1954, when the students
were bused to the district

Four classrooms were in
operation at the time of the
school's closing in 1974,
Speaking Contest held last
Thursday evening at the
East Williams Public School.
After a brief introduction
she illustrated her point with
a brief comment using the
sign language. She
challenged her audience as
to what they would do if they
were a waitress' at Mac-
Donalds and someone came
in and spoke to them in the
sign language.
In her speech she noted,
that more and more people
are becoming increasingly
aware of the problems of the
deaf, and are learning the
sign language in order to
communicate.
Beth Smith, another gra&
seven student, also kept her
audience well attentive as
she outlined some of the
situations she and her family
experienced while in the
province of Quebec last
summer as they struggled
with their slight knowledge
of the french language.
"The word foreigner
describes the way we were
beginning to feel", she ad-
mitted. "Hut a day or two of
such experiences can greatly
increase your feelings for
others,"
Runner up, Jeff Harmer
spoke on Future Energy
Sources. "The cleanest and
cheapest source is the sun,"
he stressed.
Twelve students took part
in the contest including
Tammy Frisa Rogert
Hokannson, Lois McCallum,
Mary McPhee, Dan McPhee,
Joanne McMillan, Cameron
Macdonald, Monica
Scheifele and Tracey
Steeper: Each of the con-
testants were awarded a
dollar from the Home and
School Association, with first
place winner receiving, five
dollars, second, three and

Church in Ailsa Craig, Tom
Greene, former trustee of
