Times-Acivoclato, February 13,1980. party feud' p. In politics in recent years. In the last two campaigns in particular, the Strategy seems to be to use the medium of television to point out the mistakes and weaknesses of the other parties and their leaders. "Attack on the opposition" is a phrase often heard nowadays from reporters covering the campaign trail, and it seems an apt description, for most of the T.V. ads, It's not the type of strategy that stirs my interest or excitement. I will be hard- pressed to become enthused about the upcoming election, important though it may be. I would prefer the parties spending their money, time .and energy discussing the issues and their policies in simple clear-cut terms that the ordinary Dick and Jane could identify with. I would be more likely to listen to sixty' seconds of a party's own positive points than sixty seconds of attacks on their opposition. On the other hand, I don't want a list of rosy promises that I know can't realistically came true, or if they did, would only cause more problems further down the road, Canada has problems that won't be solved by all this fussin' and fetidite, and I for one will be glad when it's all over. Rut another question mark exists, If we have another minority govern- ment, how long will it be • until we go through the whole process again? It's ironic the election will be held a few days after Valentine's Day, I can imagine the verbal Valen- tines that will be passed amongst candidates, I'll bet 4 traditional verses will be thrown out the window, and this Valentine's Day will be like no other in Canada. - Meanwhile,'the television rebuttals go on. I'm reminded of a popular U.S. daytime game show called Family Feud. During the first few weeks of 1980, Canada has had its own version of the -show-the Party Feud. It's less friendly and less fun to watch, but the' stakes are higher, and in reality, it's not a game. Odds 'n Ends MR. AND MRS. Too late I remembered it was., Super bowl Sunday. I watched the game for a few minuteS not because I'm a football fan but because turning the T.V. channel meant getting u.P. The underdogs were putting up a gsood battle. At that point, .the game was. closer .than any of the ex- perts. had. predicted:, I was. struck by the hard hitting in the game. At first, I thought it was only over-reaction from an un-initiated viewer, but even the commentators remarked on the hard hitting, plays. Then came time for a commercial, and. I was assaulted by another type of hard hitting the debut of election campaign television ads, Television has played an increasingly important role: As" houseplants .start ,showing signs of life, the pesky insects that have been waiting for the proper conditions to return may start to cause problems. "The most common houseplant insects at this time of year are the sucking insects aphids and spider mites," says Bob Hamer- sma, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food hor- ticulturist. "Unlike the chewing insects, these pests destroy plants by sucking the sap." Aphids tare 'small, soft- bodied, slow-.moving in- sects. Usually, you can spot them on the new growth of the plant. One symptom of severe ,thuRage is that the leavea4uir inward', as the aphidilfeed.' A<, sticky sub- stance on The, leaves may also indicate the presence of aphids. "Fortunately, there are many insecticides available to control aphids on houseplants," says Mr. Hamersma. "One popular insecticide is malathion, but there are many others. Check the label to make sure the product is recommended for aphid control." Although spider mites are active on houseplants all year long, their population tends to build up as the days become longer. The tiny spider mites feed on the underside of the leaves, making it difficult "to spot them before it is too late. Plants infested with spider mites may have mottled leaves. As the insect sucks under the leaves, spots on the top of the leaf may ap- pear lighter in color. Other indications of spider mites are general dullness of foliage, and webbing on the underside of the affected leaves. They're the an- swer to quick and easy meals, say the food specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. One of the main con- veniences of canned vegetables is that they can be stored in a cool, dry area for long periods of time. For best quality, it's wise to use them within a year. Date each can with a grease pencil before you put it away. With a goOd stock on hand, you'll always have the makings of a quick and convient meal. • Also, for your con- venience, canned vegetables come in many different sizes. Most vegetables are available in the standard sizes of 10-, 14-, 19-, 28- and 48-ounce containers. The convenience of using canned vegetables is that, first of all, the preliminary work of washing and cutting has already been done. Also, because canned vegetables are 'fully cooked during processing, you need only to heat them until piping hot in their own liquid. "If only a few plants are affected, wipe or syringe the leaves, par- ticularly the undersides, with a detergent solution or water. If this is not practical, it may be best to discard the infested plants, because the mites will spread rapidly to healthy plants." Some insecticides, in- cluding malathion, can be used to control spider mites. < However, they must be used several times each week, for a number of weeks to control the large number of insect generations. • Comfortable and relaxing for everybody - 'excellent for arthritis sufferers. • Also Hot Tubs Available Contact DENNIS ROWE Home Office 229-6284 393-6551 In a can • convenience WOOLS AND WOOL BLEND 150 cm wide 1/2 PRICE T-SHIRT STRIPES & PLAINS Save On Discontinued YARN SAVE PLENTY ON QUALITY FABRICS 100 yd. - 30d D' 300 yd - 80c QUILTED FABRICS 90 cm wide ;300 per metre' BUTTONS 11/2 PRICE the junction Cotton, Polyester BRUSHED SHIRTING 115 cm wide $300 • per metre DRIMA THREAD
