For several years now a
small strong-willed group of
disabled and able-bodied
people have gathered once a
month in Huron County, The
group, the Awareness
League for Physically
Handicapped Adults" in
Huron County, better known
simply as ALPHA-Huron is
concerned with making their.
N.G. Sister Margaret Cook
welcomed 66 members to the
secret pal party of Pride of
Huron Rebekah' Lodge
Wednesday evening. V.G.
Sister Marjorie Arthur
assisted with the busineSs
and gave the sick 'and
visiting report. She said
Sister Irene Fleming had
been in an accident.
J.P.N.G. Shirley Cooper
reported the CPT committee
had had a successful euchre.
A letter was read from PDD
Doug Cantelon, Clinton
saying that over $600 had
been left from the purchase
of a whirlpool bath that
District 8 Odd Fellows and
District 23 Rebekahs had
donated to Huronview and
that a new project would be
found.
A letter was read from
Sovereign Grand Lodge
stating February is
Educational Month and also
reminding the members that
the Sovereign Grand Lodge
sessions will be held in
Toronto in September 1980.
The Noble Grand reported
that a student from SHDHS
will be partidipating in the
Lodge speak-off in an-
ticipation of going to the
United Nations in July.
Several sisters will serve

county a better place to live
for the physically disabled.
Like the Ontario March of
Dimes, ALPHA-Huron is
.concerned with, structural
barriers that restrict the
disabled from many com-
munity buildings.
According to Pat Watson,
of Brussels, President of
ALPHA-Huron, coinmun-
ities in the area have
responded poorly to the
-group's requests for more
accessible buildings and
downtown areas.
Pat said, "We don't expect
people to tear dOwn buildings
to make them accessible,
However, when new ones are
being constructed we would
like to Offer our advice on
how to make them accessible
to everyone.'t
As some one who has been
confined to a wheelchair
since 1967 due to a spinal
infection, Pat knows the full
implications of an inac-
cessible community.
Some of the structural
barriers facing the
physically disabled are
curbs, narrow doorways,
stairs and small washrooms.
Most ofthese barriers can be
avoided before construction
if the needs 'of the disabled
are considered beforehand.
If this is done there is usually
little or no additional cost to
the building.
However, despite letters
from ALPHA-Huron to all
the area town councils,
expl(aining the importance of
accessibility, and the
group's willingness to offer
advice on the matter,
inaccessible buildings
continue to be built.
"I find it frustrating,"
says Pat, "that so few people
ask us about what we need."
Perfect examples of this
are the new community
centres in sotne towns. They
were made accessible, or so
the builders thought, by
putting in elevators and
making some alterations.
The only problem is that the
builders did not seek the
advice of the disabled and;
as a result, many of the
alterations are poor in terms
of accessibility.
ALPHA-Hurons' advice is
free, but people continue to
take the attitude that, they
know what is best for the
disabled instead of asking
the disabled what is best for
them,
However, PA is quick to I
point out that the efforts to
make them accessible are
appreciated by the disabled
as they now can use the
facilities. Her only wish is
that 'the advice of 'ALPHA-
Huron be sought before more
changes are made.
The ALPHA group, whose
members include both
disabled and able-bodied
people from across Huron
County meets once a month
" in either Brussels or Clinton
to discuss such concerns as
accessibility and housing.
Everyone is welcome 'to
attend their meeting and
membership is only $1,00 per
year. Further information
can be obtained from Pat
Watson by contacting her at
her Brussels home.
The group wants the
people of Huron County to
listen to the needs of the
physically disabled and to
realize that ALPHA-Huron
can be a valuable resource to
the citizens of Huron County.
The Ontario March of
Dimes would like to point out
that there are over 750,000
disabled people in Ontario.
It's a group too large to be
ignored.
