AILSA CRAIG
The Rt. Rev. George
Tuttle, Moderator of the
United Church in Canada,
was guest speaker at the
Carlisle United. Church last
Sunday, as.the congregation
placed a new cornerstone as
part of its centennial
celebrations.
Prayer for
church unity
By JOY SCHEIFELE
Last Sunday evening a
small group gathered at the
Ailsa Craig Baptist Church
in prayer for church unity.
The service was part of the
nation-wide week of Prayer
observances sponsored by
the • Canadian Council of
Churches and by the local
Ministerial Association.
The service was led by the
Rev. Kenneth Hayes of the
Baptist Church and.followed
the format set on the
national level on the theme,
"Your Kingdom Come".
The Rev. Alex J. Simpson
of the Presbyterian Church
was the guest speaker. He
pointed out to the
congregation that the ser-
vice had been prepared and
printed this year by the
Roman Catholic Church and
although there were no
representatives from that
denomination in the
congregation, it was good to
have this co-operation and
spirit of unity among
churches. He stressed that in
order for God's Kingdom to
be brought about, there must
be unity and a working
toward this end.
Peter Snell of the Ailsa
Craig United Church brought
special music for the ser-
vice, and ass!sted at the
piano.
Did you know that one out
of every two Americans
wears glasses — which just
goes to show you how impor-
tant ears are.
An excellent crowd
gathered to bear the
moderator's address which.
Was entitled, "Living.
Stones". He stressed that if
God came to us, we can go to
.others-our love overflows.
"Each of us are pastors in
our own way.. Our Ministry
spills out into the community
and the world", he
elaborated,
The morning's
celebrations included the
dedication of a capsule and a
new cornerstone. Mr. Elliott
IVIacKichan read the con-
tents of the sealed capsule
which included a New
Testament, a list of the
present church members
and adherents, a history
book of the congregation,
coins of the day, a church
bulletin, and the remains of
the original contents which
had disintegrated when the
first container was opened. A
Bible, coins, and a picture of
the first minister from 100
years ago had been among
the original contents.
The service was conducted
by Peter Snell, Minister of
the Carlisle Church, with
Mrs. Lyell Lee as organist.
Special music was supplied
by the Carlisle choir and the
Centralia Quartet.
Noting the quartet was
from Centralia, the
moderator recalled an in-
cident 30 years ago when
he'd been visiting the church
at Centralia and had been
presented with a notebook by
the congregation's boys'
club.
The notebook's cover was
made of wood and had been
engraved by wood burning
and has since remained
among the Moderator's
treasured possessions. "I
still use it to jot special
numbers down in", he af-
firmed.
Flowers in the church
were in memory of Rod
Spicer of RR 2 Ailsa Craig
who suffered a sudden
passing recently.
After the service lunch
was served in the Sunday
School room and a time of
fellowship was enjoyed.

Craigholme Nursing .Home,
and action was taken
recently to provide an in-
service program for staff in
-order to provide better care
for-the residents.
Joanne Hardy of the
Clandeboye . area and
physiotherapist with the
London Middlesex Home
Care Program has been
visiting the home on a
regular basis for sometime
giving help to residents who
require specific treatment.
At the initiative of the
Nursing Home and a new
course has been designed by
Craigholme and the London
Middlesex Home Care
Program which is being
offered to Craigholme staff
as a pilot program. Close to
forty staff members will be
engaged in the eight hour
course, which will enable
them to better understand
physical handicaps any :
resident may have, both in
their origin and the treat-
ment of the handicap.
Following each session
staff members are en-
couraged to make
suggestions which would in
any way make the program ,
more effective, If the course
proves helpful, it will then be
used in other settings by the
Home Care Program.
Currently at Craigholme,
physiotherapist, Joanne
Hardy, is able to assist the
staff in working more ef-
fectively with residents, and
in the future each resident
will experience an effective
and relevant e exercise
program immediately upon
admission.
Instruction with the staff
began last week, and is
heartily endorsed by local
physician, Dr. C. Hoch, who
also had input into the
course.
"We hope to make our
staff more aware of physical
handicaps of residents and
how they can assist han-
dicapped persons live to
their potential", reported
