tie both outings
PRESIDENT HONOURED — Outgoing president of the
Grand Bend and area Chamber of Commerce, Nick Carter,
received a plaque from the new president, Gene Grenier. The
meeting was held last Tuesday at the Green Forest.
ONTARIO FUNERAL SERVICE ASSOCIATION
The regular meeting of St.
John's Anglican ladies met
Thursday afternoon in the
Parish hall with fifteen in
attendance.
Convener, Thelma
Brosseau presided, and
opened with prayer. The
ladies were pleased with the
success of the euchre party
held last week.
They plan to do an in-
ventory in the Parish hall
kitchen in January.
A church vestry meeting
will be held the second
Thursday in January, and
the ladies will supply a pot
luck dinner.
Lunch hostess, Lillian
Best, served cake and tea at
close of the meeting.
Church of God news
More than 40 attended
children and youth night,
Friday evening at Church of
God. They viewed an
animated film at the school
gym titled, "The Gift," then
broke up into groups for
discussion. As an idea for
working together, the
children dusted pews in the
church. Donuts and refresh-
ments were served in the
S.S. rooms.
At the Church of God
Sunday morning service, the
HaroldVincentfamily took a
special part in the service for
"Christ Birthday," of-
ferings, Lucille read the
scripture, Michael and
Michelle had speaking parts,
Lori placed the banner of
"Peace" and Harold led
in prayer.
At the Sunday evening
service of Church of God, the
ladies group had charge of
the first part of the service
led by Millie Desjardine,
speaking on "Gifts of
Christmas." Under the tree
were small gifts with
spiritual meaning which she
commented on.
A film and commentary on
Japan was shown.
United church news
The annual White Gift
service, with the theme a
Festival of Lights was held
Sunday morning at the
United church. Assisting
Rev. H. Moore, was Paula
Taylor, who lit the second
Advent candle.
The Sunday school
children and teachers at-
tended and conducted the
service. A treasure chest
placed in front of the altar
contained wrapped gifts.
Young people of the
congregation, Shellie
Meecham, Steven Walper
and Paul Love, each had
speaking parts and in turn
handed out the gifts for the
children to unwrap. These
gifts of love were a loaf of
bread, representing "life", a
white candle, "light",
musical instrument of
guitar, "celebration of joy,"
and balloon, "gift of sur-
prise."
Following this the children
placed their white gifts in the
box, followed by the
congregation.
Scripture reading was
from. John 1:9-12.
Choir selections were
"Gentle Mary laid her
child," and "No Crowded
Eastern street."
Grand Bend Sunday School
concert will take place
Friday evening December 14
at 7.30 p.m.
On Sunday evening
December 9 at 8.00 p.m.
there will be Slide Presen-
tation on Alaska at the
Centralia United church.
The slides will be presented
by Walter Fydenchuk, and
all proceeds are to go to the
Abraham John family fund.
Ecumenical service
More than 80 attended the
Christmas Ecumenical held
at the Church of God
Tuesday evening. All were
welcomed by Mrs. Katie
Vincent, President of Church
of God ladies group.
A hymn sing, led by Millie
Desjardine of favorite
Christmas carols opened the
service.
Mrs. Martha Geromette,
from Greenway United read
the Christmas story and a
poem.
Mrs. Blanche Morrice
from Grand Bend Anglican,
spoke of the Advent season
and beginning of new year in
Anglican faith. She read two
poems "One wish for
Christmas" and "Taking
time."
The Catholic church
number was two solos by
Mrs. Roberta Walker, "The
secret of Christmas", and
"Rise up Shepherd and
follow,"
United Church women
presented a play "This little
light of mine." Reading
parts were taken by Marlene
Brenner, Hazel Broad and
Elda Adams. This play was
written by a young man in
Saskatchewan for a
Christmas eve service. It
portrayed living in darkness
until a candle lit up their
lives.
Church of God number was
their choir singing "Gifts",
All musical ac-
companiments were played
by Betty Campbell.
Marilyn MacGregor read
scripture from Luke.
Rev. John Campbell,
spoke on the topic, "What
does Christmas mean to
us?" He said Christmas
means many things to many
people, a time of giving, a
time of peace. He closed with
a quotation from Henry Van
Dyke, If you can keep
Christmas for a day, why not
always?
The offering of over $90.00
will be sent to help a needy
family in the area.
After the service, all
gathered in the S.S. Rooms,
for a most delicious lunch.
Careless
driving charges
withdrawn
Charges of careless
driving against Gary Near,
20, of RR 1, St. Pauls were
withdrawn in court recently.
Near had been charged as
the result of a two car ac-
cident on October 13 at the
junction of highway 7 and
Perth Road 28. The second
car was driven by Rev.
Harley Moore, a United
Church minister in Grand
Bend. Rev. Moore, his wife
Elaine Moore, Irene Ken-
nedy Minnie Curts and
Eloise Eagleson all of Grand
Bend were injured in the
crash.
Ontario Provincial Police
at Sebringville say that Near
was charged on October 18
following an investigation of
the accident.

have not been claimed. New

have been drawn. The prizes
can be picked up at Grand
Bend Decorating.

The Grand Bend Mariners
gained a tie in both South
Huron intermediate hockey
league outings this week.
Thursday in Hensall the
Mariners were held to a 3-3
tie by the Hensall Sherwoods
and Friday night they played
to a 7-7 deadlock with the
Centralia Marauders.
The Mariners will be back
in action Friday night when
they meet Kettle Point at
Huron Park and Sunday they
travel to Parkhill to meet the
Merchants.
In Thursday's tie with
Hensall, Grand Bend scored
the first and last goals of the
game.
The only goal of the first
period came from the stick
of Tod Sherk of Grand Bend
on an unassisted effort at
6:35.
In the middle frame, Rick
Ingram tied the score for
Hensall on a pass from
Murray Connelly and Fred
Campbell converted a pass
from Brian Campbell to put
the Sherwoods ahead at 7:06.
The Hensall lead was
short-lived as Rick Moody
hit the mark for the
Mariners at 12:25 with the
assist going to Mike
Desjardine.
Fred Campbell put the
Sherwoods in front again at
4:36 of the third period on a
three-way combination with
Brian Campbell and Lloyd
Allan.
Pete Gil notched the
equalizer for Grand Bend
with about 10 minutes left in
the game. The assist was
provided by Joe Falsetti.
Need late rally
In Friday's tie with the
Centralia Marauders, the
Mariners needed a three
goal outburst in the third
period to get back on even
terms.
Centralia scored the first
three goals of the game in
the first period and the
Mariners could only get one
score back.
Mark Cronyn started the
Centralia scoring with a
power play goal at 2:32 of the
first period with Rick
Funston and Ron Funston
assisting. Rick Moody was
sitting out a tripping penalty.
Less than a minute later,
Rick Funston made the score
2-0 as he converted a pass
from Mark Cronyn. Al the
halfway mark of the period,
Cec Nickles hit for the
Marauders on a three-way
effort with Blair Hearn and
Dick Lord.
The Mariners hit the
scoreboard With four
minutes left on a successful
shot by Joe Falsetti. The
assist went to captain Bob
Lovie.
Scoring came thick and
fast in the second period with
each team counting three
times.
Joe Falsetti chalked up his
second goal of the night for
the Mariners on a pass from
Pete Gil, Pete Gill hit on
passes from Joe Falsetti and
Pete Gil and Tod Sherk was
successful on a play started
by Rick Moody and Bob
Lovie.
Captain Ron Funston was
the first to score for Cen-
tralia with assists going to
Mark Cronyn and Rick
Funs ton, Cronyn counted
from Rob Funston and Hugh
Wilson and Cec Nickles hit
with passing help from Blair
Hearn and Pete Glover.
The Mariners struck
quickly in the third period
with two early goals to tie the
score. The period was only 20
seconds old when Tom Sherk
hit the mark with assists
from Joe Falsetti and Pete
Gill and a minute later Rick
Moody converted passes
from Mike Desjardine and
Mac Richardson.
Rick Moody put the
Mariners into a 7-6 lead at
11:35 on an unassisted effort.
The lead lasted for only 25
seconds as Perry Knee
scored for the Marauders on
a pass from Rick Funston.
The Mariners took eight of
the 15 minor penalties
handed out by referees Brian
Campbell and Wayne Cor-
bett.
