In the third game of the week, the Marauders dropped a 4-2 decision to the Goderich Merchants. In the 4-4 tie with Parkhill, the Marauders were within 33 seconds of getting a victory. Each team scored one goal in the first period. Gary Williams scored for Parkhill and Mark Cronyn replied for Centralia on a three-way effort with Matt Muller and Dick Lord. The only goal of the second period was fired by Paul Kramer of Parkhill. The Marauders scored three straight goals early in the third period to go ahead by a score of 4-2. Blair Hearn registered on passes from Cec Nickles and Dennis Carty, Matt Muller scored with assists from Rob Funston and Pete Glover and Glover converted a pass from Matt Muller. Rick Zabanck hit for Parkhill at 15.38 and Gary McLeod shot the equalizer with only 33 seconds left. The locals suffered 5-2 and 8-6 losses to Seaforth, moving the Centenaires three points ahead of them for the fourth and last playoff spot. The other loss was a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of the Mitchell Hawks. The disastrous week started on Tuesday when the Hawks travelled to Seaforth for a head-to-head battle for the fourth spot. The Centenaires jumped into a 1-0 lead in the first and then added four in the final frame as they skated away from the locals who were inept on many good 'scoring chances throughout the contest. Bryan Baker scored both goals for Exeter, the first on a play with Kerry Bedard and Larry Dawson, while Doug Fletcher helped out on the second tally. The Hawks picked up nine of the 17 penalties called, the total including fighting majors to Doug Fletcher and Bill Smith of Seaforth. Playing at home, Friday, the Exeter crew were no match for the high-flying Mitchell Hawks who featured a well-balanced scoring attack that netted three goals in each period. In addition to the nine goals, the visitors fired another 31 shots at Steve Sararas who failed to get much help from his mates. Dave Fischer in the Mitchell nets had a relatively easy time in recording the shutout as he handled only 15 shots. His biggest task was in keeping warm. Exeter had 17 penalties, including a fighting major to Bryan Baker and a game misconduct in the third period to coach Ron Bogart. Mitchell served 11 penalties. But, one in December sounds a little unusual, you might think. This rare feat was accomplished a few days ago by a Grand Bend resident. No, he wasn't showing off his golfing abilities on the Oakwood course in Grand- Bend. Emerson Desjardine, better known as "Nig" recorded this rare golfing feat on the 235 yard par four hole of the Holiday Country club in Lake Park, Florida with a three wood. Nig had three witnesses to his once in-a-lifetime accomplishment. They were his wife Ethel and Karen and Doug Courtney. A sports mixup The headline writers handling the front page of Thursday's morning edition of the Toronto Globe and Mail were apparently not very well versed on baseball. A two column heading telling about the recent Toronto Blue Jaye trade said, "Jays get pitcher in Flames trade." The Jays did make a trade with Atlanta at the winter baseball meetings in Toronto, but, it was with the Atlanta Braves. The Flames are in the National Hockey League. Thorpe still going The following was written by our sidekick Tom Creech following a recent Jets-Stratford game. Over the years Stratford Perth's goalie Dennis Thorpe has proven to be one of the finest puck-stoppers in the Senior Continental loop. The London native who now resides in St. Marys, is also a fine example of what observers of the game of hockey usually associate with goalies in terms of per- sonality. In other words, he's a little bit "whacko". In a recent game with the Lucan-Ilderton Jets, midway through the third period Thorpe yells over to a Perth who was not dressed for the game, "What time is it?" "9:42, why do you want to know?" "I have to go to work at 10:30," Thorpe replies. "Have a couple of beers for me, will ya?" says the Perth. Thorpe is an employee of Labatts in London. As the game entered its final seconds, Thorpe made a mad dash from the net to the dressing room. Earlier on in the period with the play in the other end of the rink, our-not-dressed-Perth yelled over to Thorpe, "Are you a soup-timer?" Removing his catching mit and placing it on top of the net, Thorpe took a mouthful of his imaginary soup. While on the topic of the Perths, there's an Exeter flavor to the team with jeweller Mike Anstett perfor- ming at centre ice. Anstett who played his junior hockey with Clinton Mustangs is in his second 'year ,with the third place club. When told jokingly that he should be on the ice with the Exeter Mohawks, Anstett replied "This is what everybody in town is telling me." The member of McKnight'sfastball club in the Ex- eter and area men's rec league says he enjoys tying on the blades with the Stratford club. In the game with the Jets, Anstett was one of the few players to be wearing a face shield. The good natured right handed shot said he added the face guard after having sticks in the area of the face on three or four occasions. Exeter is well represented when it comes to per- formers in senior hockey company. In addition to Mike Anstett with th'e Stratford Perths, Barry Baynham and Hugh Mitchell are regulars with the Lucan-Ilderton Jets. Both are residents of the town of Exeter. Baynham came up through the minor system while Mitchell played his minor years in Lambeth, junior "B" with the London Squires, Junior "A" in Windsor and four years with the University of Guelph. Wrestling action The very popular Red and Black wrestling tournament will be held Friday of this week at South Huron District High School. A number of outstanding wrestling teams from high schools throughout 'Western Ontario will be in town to grapple in the 10th annual meet. The finals will be held Friday evening at the new gym at the local school and spectators are welcome. Stephen arena opens The official opening of the Stephen township arena at Huron Park will be held this Sunday .night, December 16 with a variety of exciting events on the program. The big night gets underway at 6 p.m. with a broomball game. This is open to anyone in Stephen township. All you need to qualify is bring a broom along. The official ceremonies at 7 p.m. will be followed by an hour of public skating. The highlight of the even- ing will get underway at about 8:30 p.m. It's an all-star hockey game with the best of the west taking on the least of the East. The game will be restricted to players over the age of 30 and body contact will not be allowed. The players will have to be on their best behaviour as top officials are being brought in to keep the game under control. The referees will be yours truly and Harvey Smith. That's if this writer can find a pair of skates. We know Harvey will be a great referee. For the past three or four years he has gained considerable experience as a bus driver for the Huron Hockey School and has been associated with a lot of good hockey players. We won't list any excuses for the other official. GIFT DEA For Christmas Certificates can be for part of whole memberships. Before the first period was over, Goderich was ahead 2-1 on goals by Rob Sanders and Paul Corriveau. In the second period, Cec Nickles chalked up the final Centralia goal on a pass from Matt Muller and Paul Corriveau and Cam McDonald replied for Goderich. Rally fails The Hawks fell behind early in a Sunday night meeting at the rec centre with Seaforth and then failed in a bid to get even in the third as they took an 8-6 loss. Seaforth took a 1-0 lead in the first and then built it to- 2 by the end of the second as they opened the gap over the bottom placed Hawks. Seaforth scored three times on power plays and added the final tally into an open net. Exeter scored on one of their two power play attempts, while they added two others while playing short handed. Terry Caldwell scored both goals while his team played a..man short. Adding the singles in the game were Dwight Consitt, Kerry Bedard, Dave Shaw and Preston Dearing. The Hawks had three midgets in the lineup, with Rick Lindenfield and Tom Coates joining Shaw. Dave Kinsman was the top playmaker of the night with three assists, while helping Men's curling g P.
