Volunteer help will be needed
to keep museums open in 80s
Reg. $36 NOW

The volunteer is going to
become • increasingly im-
portant if museums are to
continue to operate in the
1980's. This was the message
to the museum curators of
Lambton County when they
met at Lambton Heritage
Museum last Wednesday.
Robert Collins, a field
representative of the
Ministry of Culture and
Recreation, told the group
a
that government money for
museums will become
scarce, and helpers who will
donate their time to the
museum will be needed.
Collins told the group that
the demand for museums
will increase three to four
times over the next decade,
while the population of
Ontario will go up 20 per
cent. He accounted for the
increased need for museums
by saying that there will be
more adults with more
leisure time in the 80's,
There will also be a greater
number of immigrants
seeking to understand
Canadian history.
Collins also discussed the
problems of publicity and
promotion with the curators.
Road signs and brochures
will attract tourists, he said,
but it is also necessary to
bring in local people through
their various clubs and
organizations. He also
suggested such things as
having a museum worker
dressed as a town crier go
out and promote the
museum. Another
suggestion was the museums
change their exhibits
regularly to attract their
local visitors on a regular
basis.
Bob Tremain, curator of
the Lambton Heritage
Museum jokingly referred to
the meeting as a museum
"summit conference". He
said he invited the other
museums of Lambton
County to the meeting in
hopes of having greater co-
operation between them.
Money could be saved by

Grand Bend council is
making another attempt at
coming to an agreement
over fire protection with
Bosanquet and Stephen
townships. Council members
read over a draft agreement
at Monday night's meeting,
and the agreement is being
sent to the two townships.
Delegates from the town-
ships ae invited to attend
Grand Bend's first council
meeting in December.
In the agreement, Grand
Bend asks that costs be
shared at 33 and one third
percent by each of the
municipalities. The
agreement will be reviewed
and adjusted every two
years. Grand Bend will own
the equipment and building
and look after the day to day
administration, with the fire
chief making a bi-monthly
report. Any deficit or surplus
in a year will be carried
forward into the next year,
Grand Bend council hopes
to erect a new building to
house fire equipment which
is presently sitting outdoors.
Grand Bend would pay for
the cost of this building and
charge rent to the other
muncipalities.
Reeve Sharen is calling for
an equipment reserve fund
to be established, and the
cost of any new equipment is
to be shared between the
along in Dutch. He also
played some English songs
that all sang together, and he
demonstrated a tune ona
miniature one inch mouth
organ.
Plans are being made for a
special Christmas meeting
and pot luck dinner,
Lunch, and coffee and tea
refreshments closed a
pleasant afternoon.

Mrs. Irene Kennedy
returned to her home in
three councils.
The eqiuipment reserve
fund has created problems
between the councils.
According to clerk Louise
Clipperton, the townships
are reluctant to give their
money to the fund,
Erwin Schotteroff of
Pinedale Motel and Dale
Hayter of Dale's Esso came
before council to request that
they have sewer connections
to a road allowance at the
rear of their property which
could be gravity fed, rather
than paying for pumps so
that the sewers could be
connected at highway 21.
Schotteroff had already
discussed this proposal with
consulting engineer Jack
Leslie. Council told the
delegates that they agreed in
principle with the proposal,
but everyone living in that
area would have to go along
with it, to make the idea
viable.
Reeve Sharen told
Schotteroff to have everyone
in that area sign a petition, to
make sure that everyone
agreed with the proposal.
The major portion of the
council meeting was taken
up with reading
correspondence. A letter was
received from Dan Spence of
Hill Street asking council
what the procedure would be
to fill any vacancies that

might occur on council.
Spence said that
ultimately he would like to
run for reeve in the next
election. In his letter he
listed his experience and
gave references. Council
members chuckled at the
offer, but Reeve Sharen said
that it was "nice to see
someone volunteering."
Council received a letter
from Grand Bend Nursery
School asking them to donate
towards the cost of
operation. The letter pointed
out that it costs more each
year to maintain the status
quo, and the improvements
are on top of that. Tuition
fees can't cover all costs, the
letter stated.
"I'd like to see it go,"

Sharen said. Council decided
that they couldn't establish a°
pretedent, but Sharen added
"We can't say a flat no."
Councillor Keith Crawford
said that they could consider
making a donation in the
upcoming budget, and they
should also find out if other
municipalities are donating
to the school.
Council decided to file a
request from Dunnville to
endorse a proposal that all
railway crossings have
automatic signalling
devices. They decided not to
endorse a request from West
Carlton that equilization
factors be changed again,
Similarly, they turned down
a request for endorsement on
a proposal from the town of
Valley East that school
children not have to cross
highways when getting on or
off school buses. "It's too
simplistic, with no thought
given to cost," Sharen said.
Council also turned down a
request from the Toronto
Dominion bank to post a sign
underneath the drug store
and post office signs on the
corners of 81 Crescent.
Council 'decided that the
drug store and post offices
were services, while the
bank was a business.
In other business, council
approved the purchase of a
commercial snowblower at a
cost of $951.96. Councillors
were advised by the reeve to
start working on next year's
budgets.
