The Citizen, 2007-12-20, Page 10PAGE 10. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 20, 2007.Hockey Days are here again! For the second year, communityand a love of hockey will combine to
celebrate Hockey Days in North
Huron, Jan. 2-6.
According to director of
recreation/facilities for North Huron
Pat Newson, this year’s agenda is a
mix of the old with some new to
provide optimal entertainment
value.
“We took the successes from last
year and tweaked them. We have
taken everythiing that worked well,
built on that and make them
better.”
For example there was one
Oldtimers game. This year, hockey
fans can enjoy a Redneck Hockey
Night on at the Blyth arena on
Saturday. “This will be a really fun
adult evening,” said Newson.
The puck drops at 7:30 p.m. with
the first game between the Blyth
ABCDD Gals against NHL (North
Huron Lineup of staff and council).
The next contest pits the Blyth Old
Dogs against the Wingham
Goodtimers, to be followed by a
game between the Wingham
Rockers and the Teeswater Model
Ts.
Upstairs that evening there will be
an age of majority event where
“people can line up at the trough for
a real redneck spread,” Newson said.
This will be run during the games
and after. Tickets are $10 and can be
purchased at the North Huron
recreation department in Wingham
or at Elliott Nixon Insurance in
Blyth.
Also new this year is a double
header on Sunday at the North
Huron Wescast Complex, Sunday at
2 p.m. the Wingham Ironmen will
play the Goderich Sailors, while the
Bulls will face-off against the
Goderich Pirates at 5 p.m. Children
are admitted free.
Also in Wingham on Saturday will
be the first Libro Financial hockey
days cup challenge, featuring teamsfrom Blyth and Wingham MinorHockey. There will be five gameswith the winning town receiving thetrophy. The games start at 9 a.m. with the
cup being presented at 2:30 p.m.
Kicking off the weekend is
another new feature. On Jan. 2 in
Blyth at 7:30 p.m. the K-W
Sidewinders will take the ice with
members of Blyth Minor Hockey for
a sledge hockey game.
The sport is for those with
physical disabilities who use a sled
to play a form of hockey.
Other activities include the road
hockey tournament in Belgrave on
Jan. 3, sponsored by the local
Kinsmen. “This is free and runs
from 6-8:30 p.m. Bring a hockey
stick. It’s for all ages and should be
fun.”
From noon until 3 p.m. it’s shinny
hockey in Wingham. Participation is
free.
The official opening is Friday
night when the puck drops in
Wingham for the all-star game
between the Bull Ringers and the
North Huron All-Stars.
The night also includes the silent
auction and “infamous” toilet races.
“The challenge has been sent to
service clubs and councils to put a
team of three together and compete,”
said Newson.
Saturday morning the day begins
with a “breakfast of champions”
served by the Wingham Optimists.
This runs from 7:30 a.m.-1 p.m.
Besides the double header on
Sunday there will be free public
skating in Wingham from noon-1:30p.m. and in Blyth from 1-3:30 p.m.While some events are free,Newson said there is a goal this yearfor this community-based event to
give something back to the
community as well.
“This year we are trying to raise
some funds to be donated back to the
community in some way. And to
have fun while we’re at it. You have
to do something in a North Huron
winter.”
Hockey Days are here again
On the move
It was an old-fashioned cross-town rivalry as Brussels came
to Blyth last Thursday for some Midget Rep hockey.
Brussels eventually took the contest 4-0, fueled by a steady
diet of timely goals throughout the tough, hard-fought
contest. (Shawn Loughlin photo)
