The Citizen, 2007-12-06, Page 21While many people may not think of the Huron County Health Unit as a leader in research, the health unit has a different story. The health unit presented findings on four research projects in Huron County last week at a conference. The workshop was organized in partnership with the Perth District Health Unit. From access to nutritional food to rural youth issues, presenters shared their findings with over 50 people. Health unit executive director Penny Nelligan says doing research in Huron County is vital to providing good public health services. “Carrying out research means we’re able to provide services that meet community needs. It makes sure we’re reaching the right people with the right programs.” The health unit presented findings on four studies. One focused on the link between obesity in Huron and people’s access to nutritional food. Obesity rates in the county are the highest in the province. It is also one of the most rural, with only 17.5 residents per square kilometer. The study found that access to nutritional food through grocery stores varies across the county. Another project shared was the development of a youth-run website. It was designed to address rural youth health issues such as substance abuse, lack of transportation and things to do, and limited health services fo rural youth. The SPARK website is run by Huron County youth with professional support. Dr. Beth Henning, medical officer of health, says she’s proud of the work of the health unit. “The research we do is of international quality in its creativity and scientific base. It’s rejuvenating to be part of such exciting and interesting research.” One of the conference organizers and epidemiologist for the Huron County Health Unit, Rachel Savage, was pleased with the day. “It’s an opportunity to listen and hear what research is going on locally. It’s all about improving what we do and how we do it as a health unit. It’s also great to see the partnerships formed with other partners such as universities. This has been very important to the research.” THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 6, 2007. PAGE 21. Burnside and Associates Ltd. have completed a Draft Operational Amendment Report for the Ashfield landfill aite. A-C-W intends to apply to the Ministry of the Environment to establish a maximum daily tonnage of 70 tonnes per day. This amendment would allow the site to accept wastes from Ashfield, Colborne and Wawanosh wards up to the proposed daily limit. The township is also applying to amend the approved contour plan, but this variance would not increase the total approved site volume. This report is now subject to a 30- day review period, during which the public is welcome to review the draft report, and make comments. The report will be available to review at the township office, and all comments will be forwarded to Burnside. “If we had a scale we’ll get true value out of our site,” said reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek, suggesting that future considerations for weight and scale equipment may be in order. “Right now, we’re just guessing at it.” We’re having a Reptile Sale Lizards, amphibians, snakes & more! 257 Josephine St., Wingham 519-357-1616 Purchase any of our reptiles and receive 5 dozen Cricket Credits Make fun and entertaining Christmas gifts! 10%off any animal purchase 15%off any animal & set-up Prices in effect until December 24th Brussels Variety Open 7 days a week 565 Turnberry St., Brussels 519-887-6224 We now have an ATM machine • GROCERIES • POP • CIGARETTES Orders taken for fresh Hayter turkeys Also: Beautiful Poinsettias for the Christmas season ✦✦ Christmas Cards & Wrapping Paper ✦✦ Christmas Candies & Chocolates ✦✦ Lottery Gift Packs We are your Christmas Headquarters for: Consignment & New Babies through Teens Clothes, toys and old-fashioned candy Largest kids’ consignment shop in Huron County 258 Josephine St., Wingham 519-357-1199 Visit us on the web at www.babyboom2.com dease@babyboom2.com Newborn to Teens clothes The Little Dipper Chocolate Fountain Service Perfect for Wedding Receptions, Birthday Parties, New Year’s Eve or any other celebration!
