followed by a hymn and prayer.
The minutes were read and
approved as well as the treasurer’s
report. Mary Hunter presented the
2008 budget, which was approved.
During the business it was decided
to give donations to Camp
Menesetung, Children’s Aid,
Christian Resource Centre, Medical
Electives, the CT scanner and Knox
United Church.
It was also decided to ask
members of the congregation topurchase poinsettias in memory of aloved one, or just as a donation,toward the decoration of the churchfor the Christmas season.A list can be made of thememorial donations, and recognized
in the Christmas bulletin.
Please give the names to Muriel
Coultes.
The UCW will also provide funds
for extra decorations for the church.
Muriel Coultes presented the
nominations report, with very few
changes, and Pat Hunking staying
on as president. The offering was
received and dedicated.
The worship service and program
was conducted by Gloria Dow, and
members of the Calvin Brick Unit of
the UCW. Mrs. Dow used as their
theme, Christmas Babies, with the
Christ candle. Five white candles, an
empty cradle and two rocking chairs
as the centre stage items.
Following a hymn, prayer and
scripture reading from Luke 1,
Muriel Taylor told the story of a
childless woman. Mrs. Coultes then
read the story of a single mother of
five, who had left an abusive
husband.
After the singing of another hymn,
Margaret Cunningham told the story
of a mother during wartime and
Adele Dodds told of being a
teenage, unwed mother.
Another hymn was followed by
Betty Ross telling the story of a
working mother with two children to
raise.
Margaret Jamieson told the story
of Mary, the Mother of Jesus.
Mrs. Dow then read a poem, Love
Came down at Christmas which she
followed with a meditationencouraging everyone to lookaround our own community to findsomeone to include in our Christmascelebrations.Five candles were lit by thereaders and each was followed with a prayer. The baby Jesus was thenplaced in the empty cradle duringthe singing of Away in a Manger.Silent Night was sung and theBenediction was given by Mrs. Dow.Lunch was served and a socialtime followed.

FROM BELGRAVE
The November meeting of the
Belgrave Women’s Institute was
opened by the president, Nancy
Jardin welcoming 16 members and
one guest. She read a story of the old
time general store.
Kay Roberts introduced Ken Wood,
who showed pictures and told of his
trip to Antarctica which is 600 miles
from the tip of South America. He
was there in February which is the
summer season and the temperature
was from 2°C - 4°C.
There were pictures of many kinds
of seals including fur, leopard,
crabeater and elephant. There are
many kinds of penguins and whales
as well.
There are no permanent residents
but there are research stations set up
by different countries. There were
pictures of the huge icebergs in the
water with more of their mass below
the water than above.
Antarctica has 90 per cent of the
world’s ice and 70 per cent of the
world’s fresh water.
There is no precipitation in the
interior and the coldest temperatures
are from -80°C - 90°C. Mary Hunter
thanked Ken for a wonderful account
of his trip and presented him with a
gift.
The business meeting began with
the minutes of the last meeting and
the treasurer’s report.
An invitation was received to attend
a quilt display entitled A Stitch in
Time at the Huron County Museum
in Goderich.
A letter was received asking for
financial support of the Agriculture
and Water Festival held in Seaforth in
April of each year. The Grade 4
pupils of Huron County schools
attend the two-day event.
Plans were made for a catering on
Dec. 8.
The offering was collected, the WI
grace sung and lunch was served by
Isabel Campbell.
The next meeting is the Christmas
dinner on Tuesday, Dec. 11 catered
by the Belgrave UCW of Knox
Church.
WI hears about

There were 11 1/2 tables of shoot
in play at the Community Centre on
Friday, Nov. 9.
The winners were: high pink card,
Mary McIntosh; second high pink
card, Helen Casemore; most shoots,
Jane Grasby; high white card,
Wilfred Caslick; second high white
card, Lloyd Appleby; most shoots,
Richard Moore.
On Friday, Nov. 23 there were 13
tables of shoot in play at the
Community Centre.
The winners were: high pink card,
Mary McIntosh; second high pink
card, Ilene Sellers; most shoots,
Helen Casemore; high white card,
Bev Hayden; second high white
card, Gordon Bosman; most shoots,
Lois Chamney.
The next shoot is Friday, Dec. 14
at 1:30 p.m.

Advent poem opens UCW meeting
Melanie Pletch greeted
worshippers on Sunday, Nov. 25 at
Knox United Church.
Bruce Whitmore welcomed the
congregation.
As the Deer Pants, and Great Is
Thy Faithfulness were sung,
accompanied by Elizabeth Procter.
The Call to Worship and Prayer of
Confession were read responsively.
The prayer, The Words of Assurance
read in unison.
The choir sang True Faith Needs
No Defence.
The children’s hymn was I Love
to Tell the Story. The children went
to the front for children’s time. Mr.
Whitmore asked them what they
would like for Christmas. They
answered toys, dolls and games. He
showed them pictures of children in
Mozambique. They have school
outside under a tree. They helped to
build a home by carrying bricks on
their head and did their washing by
scrubbing on a stone.
They would want water, food,
