The junior men’s team was coached by that avid curler Shawn Cottrill. The juniors lost their first game to Exeter then posted three straight wins to capture the Zone playdowns. The final game was a real cliffhanger as the locals were up 8- 6 going into the final end against Exeter and with only final skip rocks to play the Exeter team was lying one and when the Wingham’s skip rock slipped through the rings. A draw to the rings by the Exeter skip would tie the game. Excitement was at a high pitch as the Exeter rock was swept just through the rings giving our juniors the victory. The junior men’s team, consisting of skip Cole McDonald, vice Kyle Forster, second Matthew Hallahan and lead Matthew Cottrill, now advances to the District playdowns in Forest. In the junior women’s playdowns Kayla Bishop joined an Exeter rink as lead. This team went undefeated to win and advance to District playdown in Forest. To Kayla and the local boys we wish the best of luck. *** Last week, early each morning, a busload of local high school students started the day throwing rocks. For many of the students itwas their first introduction tocurling and from observation fromabove it looked like they were certainly enjoying the game. With the emphasis on participation it was great to see these students out enjoying the introduction to this great Canadian game. The ice is not used each morning and it is available for youth curling. It would be nice to see some of the local public schools take advantage of this opportunity to introduce their students to the game of curling. *** In Tuesday ladies’ action the results were: Sue Fair 7, Carol Horton 1; Amy Miller 11, Sandra Morrison 6 and Jenn Elston 7, Jill Eadie 2. *** In Tuesday competitive league lefty Don Edgar showed no mercy defeating Rob Middleton 16-6. Aart DeVos edged Shawn Cottrill 6-5. There was an aroma of the unpopular black and white pest as Earl Fitch downed Bill DeVos 14-0. *** In the Wednesday mixed league it was Ear Fitch 10, Steve Burke 3 and Dean Newson 9, Tammy Adams 7. Aart DeVos took an extra end to beat John Dailleboust 11-10 and in The Battle of the Hortons son Byron edged out Wayne 8-7 to win Dairy Bragging Rights. *** In Thursday Belgrave action it was John Nixon 8, Tim Coultes 6; Don Shiell 13, Niel Edgar 4;Murray McNichol 7, Fred Meier 3and Murray Shiell 10, LloydMichie 5. *** In Friday night action the results were Forster 11, Barry Simpson 3 and Wayne Waechter 6, Bill McDonald 5. *** In Monday daytime action it was Bruce Robertson 7, Stewart Leedham 5; Les Shaw 8, Wendell Stamper 5; Mac Inglis 12, Nelson Frank 5; Ivan Dow 8, Norm Fairles 5; and Bill Deans 10, Irving Elliott 4. Jim Coultes saw his winning streak stopped at four as he was downed 8-5 by Bluevale’s Ross Peacock. In a battle to vacate the cellar, the two winless teams battled it out in a close one with Bob Johnston eking out a 8-7 win over John Mann. *** In Thursday daytime play it was Jim Coultes 9, Les Shaw 3; Ross Peacock 7, John Mann 5; Stewart Leedham 11, Bill Deans 3; Bob Johnston 9, Bruce Robertson 3. Irving Elliott had an extra end win over Ivan Dow and Wendell Stamper, laying 5 on the rings, missed an easy takeout settling for two rather than 6. He went down to an 8-2 loss to Mac Inglis.
