The Citizen, 2007-10-04, Page 25The September meeting of theBrussels and District HorticulturalSociety was held on Sept. 24 at 7:30p.m. in the Brussels Library.Convenors for the meeting were Sandra Machan and Jane
White.
President, Cathrine Campbell,
welcomed everyone. The meeting
opened with the singing of O’Canada followed by the roll callwhich was answered by 21 tellingabout their “blooming” success.Cathrine Campbell presented GertKellington with a Horticultural
Service Certificate of appreciation
from the Provincial Horticulture
Association.
Sandra Machan introduced thespeaker for the evening. ElroyBartman from Zehrs in Listowel. Mr.Bartman retired from dairy farmingwhen he was 50 years old anddecided to get a degree in
horticulture. He loves to do
something different when it comes
to making arrangements.
He demonstrated how to make a
waterfall arrangement using orchids,
hosta leaves called June, salal – a
hardy leaf, bear grass and caspium.
Some of the tips he shared were:
different textures gives your
arrangement life, if roses drop their
head put them in warm water, slit the
throat of a tulip if you want it to last
longer, do not have your table flower
arrangement the same colour as your
tablecloth.
Mrs. Machan thanked him andpresented him with a gift.The minutes of the May meetingand the summer mystery tour wereread by the secretary, LeonaArmstrong.
The president thanked Debbie
Seili for supplying a truck and trailer
for the Horticultural Society float in
the Brussels 135th Homecoming
parade and everyone else who
helped with the float.
She also thanked members for the
plants and work done over the
summer at the butterfly garden.
Many beautiful pictures of the
garden were on display along with
the final plaque, In Memory of Ida
Evans.
The correspondence consisted of a
letter from the Brussels, Morris and
Grey board of recreationmanagement asking for nominationsfor citizenship awards; a thank youletter from the Brussels AgriculturalSociety for prize money receivedand the agenda for the District 8 fall
board meeting to be held at Hensall
United Church on Oct. 27. Members
are to contact Cathrine if they are
able to attend.
Everyone seemed pleased with the
hanging baskets and flower planters
on the main street.
Jane White conducted numerous
door prizes throughout the evening.
Members were reminded to bring
a guest to the potluck supper at the
next meeting on Nov. 26 at 6:30 p.m.
A lunch of sandwiches and
relishes was served by Jean Bewley
and Laura Barbour.
Morning Star Rebekah Lodge held
its installation on Tuesday, Sept. 25
at 8 p.m. in the Brussels Lodge
rooms.
District Deputy President Sister
Marjorie Gibson of Huron Perth
District #23 and her installing team
from Ruth Lodge, Stratford did the
installation.
Elected officers are: Noble Grand,
Sister Joyce Jacklin; Vice Grand,
Sister Carrol Fowler; secretary,
Sister Elva Brown; financial
secretary, Sister Lois McCall;
treasurer, Sister Joan Bernard.

Deputy President spoke about the
President’s Rebekah Assembly
program for 2007-08 and her project
which is Foundation Fighting
Blindness. Pansy pins were available
for this cause.
Visiting from Listowel were Sister
Phyllis Thompson and Sister Leola
Harrison, who recently celebrated
her 95th birthday.
A social time, lunch and two
draws were held. Lucky winners
were Sister Chapman, Stratford and
Sister Joyce Jacklin, Brussels.
