The Citizen, 2007-10-04, Page 17The members of the Walton Hall
Board and the Walton Area Sports
Club met with Huron East’s Clerk-
administrative Jack McLachlan over
matters concerning the Walton Hall
and Walton ball park.
The two entities are in need of
their own water source and so the
need for a well was discussed.
A letter sent to Huron East earlier
this month brought confirmation
that Huron East will commit to 50
per cent of the cost of the new well.
the Walton Hall board had
approached Huron East council
originally to help cover the cost of
the well with the Hall board and ball
park repaying council the funds as
they were raised.
It was a pleasure to be advised
that Huron East council would aid
in the cost.
The work will start as soon as
possible. The two committees will
be holding fundraising dinners and
Christmas concert this fall.
The Lees plus one, were off to the
United States last weekend to watch
the Motocross of the Nations. Chris,
Brett, Jake, Tim and Caden Lee and
Jamie Emmrich went to Budd’s
Creek, Maryland just outside of
Washington for the weekend.
It is a 12-hour drive. They left
Thursday and returned Monday
morning.
Riding for Team Canada were
Jean Sebastian Roy, Blair Morgan
and Cole Facciotti.
They estimate that there were
approximately 60,000 people at the
event. Team Canada finished 10 out
of 36 countries participating.
The highlight of the trip for
Caden Lee, who’s six, was having
dinner with Jean Sebastian Roy or
JSR, as he is known by many in the
motocross world.
Of course the other memorable
point was the saying “Are we there
yet?”
Also attending the sanctioned
event from the area were Bruce,
Katrin, Mitchell and Lucas Godkin
and Tyler Listman.
This is only the second time this
event has been held in North
America in its 60-year history.
We send get-well wishes to friend
Alex Townsend, who was
hospitalized last week.
It was a beautiful day for a sale at
the farm of John and Elva Brown
on Thursday. They are moving
into Brussels and Jim and Val
Shortreed and family are moving to
the farm. Happy moving to
everyone.
The McDonald family including
Rick, Jo-Ann, Scott and Alicia,
LeeAnn and Jason travelled to
Bayfield to visit and go out for
dinner with niece and cousin
Kendra Warwick.
She has been here with mom
Karin McDonald Calhoun for theweek and has now returned toCalgary. Grandma LeonaMcDonald and friend MaxineMarks checked in for a visit withKendra on Friday afternoon.Aunt Marilyn McDonald andcousin Bruce McDonald stopped inearlier in the week for their visit. As I’m writing I heard the call onCKNX to qualify for the road trip
to Stratford and why not call.
Surprise! I was the seventh caller
and qualified. We will be listening
on Monday morning to see if we
will be the winner.
The latest road trip winner going
to Niagara is a Walton person. It
was Brent Groothuis who is the
husband of Shirlee (Bachert)
Groothuis of Bachert Meats.
Congrats to them.
It was supercross in Montreal that
Brett Lee was off to on the last
weekend of September. Brett was
acting as an assistant to the director
in pointing out the best angles and
spots for getting great supercross
shots.
Supercross is the indoor version
of motocross. It’s a super tight
course with lots of twists and turns
and jumps. On Monday morning as we wereat coffee, we could see a smallairplane flying awfully low andcircling to the east of the village ofWalton. When one person left fromcoffee and headed north, he saw theplane had landed in Don Baan’swheat field to the west.He came back to tell us at thecoffee shop and off we went in
search of a story. Alas, in that short
span of 10 minutes or so, the plane
had already taken off and was
nowhere to be seen.
Why did it land? What was it
doing?
The Baans had no knowledge of
the plane’s landing, so I guess it will
remain a mystery.
Our condolences are expressed to
the family of Isabel Shortreed who
passed away Sunday. A long-time
resident of the area, she and her late
husband James W. Shortreed lived
on what was the seventh of MOrris.
Nearly 30 years ago they retired to
the village of Walton and were there
when Jim passed away in1983.
Isabel stayed in their home until
moving to the Seaforth Manor about
seven years ago.
Our sympathy is extended to Kenand Judy Shortreed and family JoanBeuermann and family and to theBill Smith Family (Louise).Congrats to Nelson Ryan whowas the big winner of $1,000 fromthe Brussels Legion elimination draw.Celebrating birthday’s last weekwere Bill Gulutzen, CrystalMcCallum, Ron Bennett, Michael
