An emergency shelter in Clinton,
which found an almost immediate
need for services upon opening in
late September, has requested an
official expression of support from
the Avon Maitland District School
Board.
Friends of the Community, begun
in 2006 as a volunteer-run food
bank, expanded its offerings with the
opening of a youth support centre at
44 Mill St. on Sept. 19. The facility
has three beds for emergency shelter,
and also provides access to
treatment or referrals to other social
service organizations.
Some time this month, the group
hopes to open a second facility at
an as-yet-undisclosed Clinton
location, containing eight beds and a
secure indoor area for the
specialized treatment of young
women facing drug-related or other
social troubles.
The organization now includes
about 35 trained volunteers, and
expects to employ three support
workers once the two facilities are
fully up and running.
Organization director Mike
Doucette made a delegation to Avon
Maitland trustees Tuesday, Sept. 25,
noting provincial regulations require
such youth-centred facilities to
inform school boards about their
activities. He welcomed the board to
provide a letter of support if they
wished.
Doucette explained 79 families,
representing 226 people, have used
the food bank service in recent
months. Still, he said the
organization was surprised with how
quickly the need for the youth
emergency centre became apparent
once it opened.
“The biggest thing that threw me
off was the idea of homeless youth,”
he told trustees. “We built the centre
with these three beds thinking we
really didn’t want to have to use
them. And then we did have to use
it.”
He added the school boards
certainly will have a role to play if
and when services are sought by a
youth who is currently attending
school.
Then, it may become necessary to
tailor the person’s schooling pursuits
with the services they require from
other agencies.
Funding for the organization
comes from various levels of
government, including a three-year,
$15,000 commitment from the
municipality of Central Huron.

In the words of Avon Maitland
District School Board
communications manager Steve
Howe, a well-known teacher at
Stratford Northwestern Secondary
School “outdoes himself” each year,
in his efforts to boost the profile of
the school’s culinary arts program.
“He was in Time Magazine. Every
year it’s a little bit bigger,” Howe
said of Paul Finkelstein. “I don’t
know where he’ll go next. Maybe it
will be a feature film.”
It may be tough for Finkelstein to
top this year’s exploits, however, if
this week’s well-orchestrated
premiere episode of a new series on
the Food Network is any indication.
On Tuesday, Oct. 2, students from
last year’s version of the program
were taken by limousine to Toronto,
one appeared alongside Finkelstein
on CTV’s much-watched Canada
AM morning show, and they all
celebrated the launch of a new
reality-themed show appropriately
titled “Fink.”
The 13-episode series, filmed
between April and June of 2007,
follows Finkelstein’s students
through their participation in this
unique program. There are scenes
from their Stratford school, where
they serve up healthy alternatives to
the stereotypical food service
cafeteria fare in a room called the
Screaming Avocado café.
But there are also scenes from a
field trip to Italy, home of the “Slow
Food” movement that’s based on
enjoying food to its fullest – from
the seed to the table.
Indeed, one of the students who
appears in the series has returned to
Italy, having secured a culinary
work placement following his
graduation from Northwestern.
A new episode of “Fink” will run
from 10-11 p.m. Tuesdays on the
Food Network, which is available on
cable or through satellite.
Also each week at 9 p.m., the
previous week’s episode will be
rebroadcast.

The history of Catholic education
in Huron and Perth Counties will be
celebrated Nov. 1 with the release of
Our Roots … Our Story, a book
being compiled on behalf of the
Huron-Perth Catholic District
School Board.
“It’s a history of our school
system, including every Catholic
school that operated in Huron and
Perth Counties,” explained director
of education Larry Langan. “We’re
really proud of (the book). We went
back to every single school and
every single room. We’ve got some
great stories about the people who
were the pioneers of Catholic
education in this area.”
The project began about 18
months ago with the formation of a
committee supported by the board.
The final product will contain
numerous photos, as well as written
contributions from 25 different
authors. “We had a lot of people
working on this, and that’s why we
were able to bring the project
together,” explained chair Ron
Marcy.
Approximately 500 copies will be
printed for release Nov. 1 during the
board’s next professional
development day. A special event
will be held at Stratford’s St.
Michael secondary school. “We are
going to have some special guests
that represent the history of this
organization,” Langan said.
